Has anyone found out what is causing our issue? Happened to me pretty frequent last night (6 different times) on my drive home (30 min drive). It's not only dangerous but annoying when your headlights shut off. People think I am trying to high beam or flash them fml. It's pretty damn embarrassing lol.

I had this happen repeatedly as well. It would only happen when i switch on the left turn signal. I always had the headlamp switch on the auto position. It would take several tries but i was able to kind of duplicate it when the lever was slightly pressed toward the dash. (as in switching the high beams). I didn't really seek a resolution on it due to trading it in though. Glad to see that i wasn't the only one with this issue though. For a minute there, i thought my eyes were messing with me.

I wonder if it's because it's on auto head light position? I will try tonight, but it's probably not that lol

Got my truck back Friday from the dealership, no issue as of yet. They replaced the combo switch (head light/turn signal) stating it had an internal open short. I believe this is the same solution someone else's dealership had. Time will tell if this fixed it, fingers crossed.

I turned the auto headlight function off and lights haven't turned off yet when using left turn signal. I am gonna do some more testing

2016 Platinum I just bought CPO has this issue. Haven’t pinpointed the exact scenario. But it sometimes occurs when the turn signal clicks off. Need to capture it on video in a parking lot or something to show service dept.

I have had this happen 3 times on my 2015 platinum. Each time it happened when signaling for a left turn with headlight switch in the auto position. All 3 episodes happened within a couple weeks.

I don't know about anyone else, but I have been running my headlights without the auto function and turning on manually. Been doing this for about 2 weeks and my headlights have not shut off when using my left turn signal. You guys might want to try. Seems to have fixed my problem but it's very annoying to remember to manually turn on and off my headlights

Hi. Why would a part that is shorting out not fix the problem, potentially?

I just recently started having this issue. Thought it was a fluke at first. The first time it occurred I was making a left turn into my neighborhood with my headlights and left turn signal on. The second time I was on the freeway when using the left signal to merge. On the same drive I again made a left turn into my neighborhood and my lights shut off. And tonight, while I was making a left, the same thing happened. Once I jiggle or flick the headlight/turn signal column, the headlights come back on. This leads me to believe the problem is in the steering column. The only other thing of note is that it has been raining when I have these problems. I always use my headlights in manual mode. Very frustrating. Will my lights come back on? Or will they eventually shut off altogether creating a dangerous situation. Can't stand intermittent problems. I have a feeling the dealer won't be of any help. Sounds like this is an ongoing problem though. Does anyone have a definitive solution?

Ok so I think I know what the problem is. I work at an auto body shop and deal with many dealers. I called my local Toyota dealer and spoke to one of the master technicians. They have fixed this problem before and are aware of the situation. They feel that the rheostat goes bad in the headlamp switch. The rheostat is supposed to work with the ambient light sensor that’s on the dash. It’s supposed to switch the lights on an off automatically. The only solution is to replace the headlamp signal stalk. The only problem I see is that it’s being replaced with the same part number, which means it can go bad eventually again. The dealer will be emailing me the directions on how to replace it. The labor to install is only .2 which means it’s very easy to replace. I will upload directions as soon as I receive them. The part is 130 bucks list. Sorry let me correct cost...(see attached photo) Cost depends on your model.

Add me to this list as well. 2016 Platinum Tundra with 30k miles, been having this issue off and on since the 1200 mile mark. It's at the dealership again today, I linked this post for them, maybe we'll get some results.

    Update:
Took my truck into the dealership and described the problem I was having. They asked if it was reproducible. I told them it was intermittent. They then said that if they looked at it and could not reproduce it, they would still charge me for the visit despite being under warranty. The tech stated that they cannot outright replace a part without proving there was something wrong with it. I told him this was a particular problem with the 1794 and Platinum models and after he spoke with the Service Manager he said they had not seen this problem at my dealer. Fortunately, I purchased the extended warranty and he said if the problem persisted beyond the 36,000/3 year warranty it would still be covered. He also said if I were to capture the problem on video, that would be enough evidence to change out the turn signal stock and or any parts associated with this problem. More to follow........

Update on my end, took it to the dealer and they are replacing both the sensor in the dash as well as the turn signal/headlight switch. They are being very cooperative so far. I also pointed them to this thread and they said they have read through it but could find no TSBs regarding. I'll keep yall posted on how it goes.

FYI, I was lucky and had a video of the issue. the morning I was taking it in I was able to catch it as I was leaving the neighborhood. Once at the dealers of course I could not reproduce it. Of note though, I have definitely notice it happens much more often when the weather is colder.

Short update, the dealer replaced the dash sensor (small round sensor at top of dash) as well as the switch itself on the turn signal stalk. So far so good, the issue is not present for the moment. Hope it stays that way!

2016 Platinum I’ve had the same issue a hand full of times.

Anybody that’s had the stalk replaced continue to have problems?

I am the original owner of a 2017 1794. Few months after the purchase, I installed some Sylvania ZXE bulbs on the OEM highlights and AMP running boards. Several years later (2019) I starting having intermittent issue around 32,000 miles (only with the left turn signal). Took it to the dealership but they could not replicate it even after showing them a video and they did not mention anything about the bulbs or AMP running boards being a factor. All the dealership said, was that they can note it on the ticket and if it becomes more than intermittent bring it back. Fast forward to 37,000 miles out of warranty (did buy extended though) and so far this week I am 5/5 with this happening every morning. In addition, I got another video. I know several posts on this thread mention they were able to get the dealership to replace the stalk and/or sensor. Did that fix it? Thank you in advance.

Question, was it cold when this started happening? In my case it occurs when it's raining and cold.

This happened to me 3 times in a 1 week span, always when turning left, and it was about 1 year ago that it happened then no issues since. I'm curious to see if it starts happening again not that it's getting cooler out.

Okay so I am now convinced this has to do with cold weather somehow, at least for me it does. I was leaving work Monday night at around 1030pm, so it was dark and auto headlights were on. The temperature was around 35°, so pretty cold. I hit the left turn signal, and bam everything went dark as I was turning out of the lot. It was only for a second and the lights came back on without any intervention.
This is now the 4th time this has happened to me. Every time it happened I have been signaling left AND turning left, by turning I mean I was steering to the left. Each time it has been cold, in fact I think all 4 events occurred in November, 3 times last year and once so far this year.

Ok so this happened to me today, twice, 2016 1794 at just under 31k miles. Weather was in the low 60s. Really makes me miss my 1st gen that never had any issues.

My 2016 Platinum is now having the same issue. I want to take it to the dealer but anticipate them blaming the issue on my retros. Both times it has happened to me have been at 75mph on the highway in the dark. Super dangerous and scary at the same time.

Lights set on auto and using blinker?
