How to modify to fit Late Model F-150

How to modify to fit Late Model F-150
Instructions furnished with the product are confusing and hard to follow. You will be much better off if you watch or read a number of the excellent reviews that others have been kind enough to post. Some salient points:1. The product is NOT UNIVERSAL. Some reviewers have emphasized doing a fitment review. I couldn't find one, but that is an excellent idea if one exists. In any event the product did not fit my 2019 F-150 XL without modification and I suspect that is true for most late model pickups.2. As mentioned the instructions are not at all clear. Watch videos and read reviews and get an idea of how the process works. Then carefully lay out the project using both the template AND the actual product to figure out where the holes should go. I found it helpful to put masking tape on my dark painted truck at the approximate hole locations to make it easier to see my marks for drilling. After you have carefully marked the hole locations you should take the part and hold it in place and make sure the holes will be in logical locations when you drill them. The hole for Side B is almost an inch inside of the 90 degree bend where Side B extends from the torsion bar portion of the product. That makes sense after you think about it and put the part in place to help visualize how it fits.3. I modified the product to fit my 2019 F-150 XL. Side B is about 2 inches too long to fit inside the tailgate because of a bulkhead stiffener inside the tailgate. I bent Side B to make it fit. See the photo. I put Side B in a vise, sticking up, and heated it with a butane torch at the point where I wanted to bend it. I used a large pipe wrench to make the bend. Since you're not heating the torsion bar part of the product heating Side B does not affect the lifting capability of the product. The modified Side B still acts as a lever inside the tailgate. Heating the part enough to bend it does burn the paint off. I cleaned the part where I heated it for bending with a wire brush and painted it with Rust Reformer. Worked like a charm.4. Bending Side B will require you to reverse the instructions and install Side B in the tailgate first and then wrestle with the tailgate to get Side A in place. It can be done and reviewer Schrogs wrote a great review telling how he installed EasyLIft after installing Side B first. It was a big help. He must be a stout fellow and is my hero because I couldn't do it alone as he did. Maybe being 77 years old was a factor. I finally had to recruit a husky helper and I strongly recommend having a helper for the actual installation process. Don't ask your wife to help. It requires a bit of strength and maybe some stern instructions for your helper - not healthy for a marriage.5. Get some touchup paint from the local parts store that more or less matches your paint and when you're done you can touch up the inevitable marks you make on the paint. Also, you should paint the holes heavily inside as much as you can after drilling and BEFORE installing Easy Lift. If you have the time, let it dry completely. A hair drier or heat gun can speed that process up. The paint will help prevent rust down the road. One reviewer said he sprayed zin rust preventer in the holes. If you have it why not use it.6. A couple of padded sawhorses are a big help when you're drilling the hole in the bottom of the tailgate for Side B.7. A number of people talked about how easy it was to lift the tail gate after installing EasyLift - referring to using only two fingers. I've included a video showing it can be done with one finger. I also previously installed a Ford OME Tailgate Assist and, while not helping lift, it does help a great deal in supporting the weight when lowering the tailgate. After installing EasyLift with the Ford OEM Tailgate Assist in place I actually had to push the tailgate down to get it to go all the way down, as you can see in the video. I'm expecting over time the EasyLift will relax a little and I won't have to hold the tailgate down. I don't know how the installation of EasyLift would be affected if you have an aftermarket tailgate assist product in place, but having a Ford OEM Tailgate Assist on my truck was absolutely no factor when it came to installing EasyLift.8. Bottom line - this is a cheap, relatively straightforward product, that actually does exactly what it is advertised to do IF you can get it installed. I would not recommend it to someone who is not reasonably handy. IT WORKS. Enough said.

The Hopkins easylift works great on my 2001 Dodge Ram 2500. I installed it myself but it would have been easier with another set of hands as recommended.
