Features of BetterWeigh Mobile Towing Scale
|
|
|
---|---|---|
Vehicle and trailerThe BetterWeigh towing scale measures the gross combined weight of your vehicle and trailer, including the vehicle, cargo passengers and trailer. This means no more guessing to decide if your vehicle is overloaded. It also eliminates the need to drive to a vehicle scale to check the weight, saving you time and money. |
Tongue weightBetterWeigh is less expensive and more effective than most other tongue weight scales. It is also much more convenient to use. The tongue weight feature allows you to verify that your trailer tongue weight is within the 10-15% range and that it is within the vehicle’s and hitch’s rated towing capacities. |
Cargo / payloadMeasure the real-time weight of your cargo or truck payload with no more guessing! BetterWeigh gives you an accurate calculation of the cargo weight in real time. This is perfect for actively loading the truck bed or cargo area and making sure you’re not overloading your vehicle’s limit. It also allows you to estimate load charges. |
Beyond Just a Tongue Weight Scale
|
|
|
---|---|---|
Pin weightAlso ideal for 5th wheel towing and gooseneck towing, BetterWeigh calculates the pin weight or vertical load of your trailer when coupled to your truck. You can easily verify that your pin weight is within the 20-25% range. You can adjust cargo as needed to make sure you’re towing safely and avoiding possible trailer sway. |
Weight distributionSetting up your weight distribution hitch has never been easier! Put away the tape measure, pen, paper and stress – BetterWeigh displays the relative weight on your front, rear and trailer axles to ensure that your weight distribution hitch is set up and adjusted correctly. It is compatible with all weight distribution systems. |
Trailer brake gainBetterWeigh streamlines trailer brake controller setup by eliminating the need for trial and error when setting the gain. No more guesswork! With one quick, 15-mph test, BetterWeigh calculates the exact trailer brake gain needed for smooth towing and brake controller operation. This saves time and reduces stress. |
How it works
|
|
|
|
---|---|---|---|
Virtually no install requirementsSimply plug the BetterWeigh into the vehicle diagnostic port below the steering wheel (OBD-II). After pairing with your smartphone, the downloadable app will walk you through the setup process. |
Laws of physics appliedNewton’s second Law of Motion states that Force equals Mass multiplied by Acceleration. BetterWeigh monitors these forces to calculate the various towing and hauling weights with exceptional accuracy. |
Bluetooth-enabledThe BetterWeigh tongue scale will work with most Apple and Android smartphones and comes with an easy-to-use app that can be downloaded from the App Store or Apple Play. |
Compatible with OBD-II vehiclesBetterWeigh works with 1996+ gas vehicles and 2004+ diesel. It also has a VIN database for faster initial setup. Vehicles that have a manual transmission or auto-level suspension will have limited functionality. |

App showed between 6k-10,000 lbs for my car and trailer over 7 different "weight runs." CAT scale showed 9320. App shows tongue weight at 570lbs, cat scale showed and tongue scale showed 660lbs. That's a MASSIVE difference for a vehicle with a 500 MAX tongue weight which could result in a serious accident.
Do what you want but I'd recommend staying away from it.

tips: LEVEL ground. Absolutely level. Do 5-6 dry runs (no trailer) to get a feel for how to calibrate it with a known truck weight. There is a certain way to press the gas pedal. Dont be too aggressive. It says half press, Id say a 1/3 press is more accurate. Like you are #1 at a traffic light when it turns green. Not drag race acceleration. A smooth press to about 1/3 pedal.
The app installs easy and is easy to find what you need. The factory has really stepped up the customer service on the device as well. I found the device accuracy around 200 to 300 pounds for weighing a vehicle (vs a certified truck scale which is under 1%). My vehicle weighs near 6000lbs. (accuracy as a percent 3-5%).
I have not tried the tongue weight function yet and determined the accuracy yet. My concern is that for a small travel trailer of 5800 pounds, the accuracy of betterweigh is equal to the full range of my allowable tongue weights. (5800lbs, allow 10-15% = 870lbs- 580lbs= 290 lbs).
The weight displays are in analog style gauges of various full range. i.e. you can choose a full range of 6000lbs or 10000lbs for example. I noticed on some forums people want digital readout, but if you shop around for trailer hitch mounted devices, they are all analog anyways.
Overall, I love the customer service of Curt, even if they couldn't solve my problem. The device testing will continue as I have yet to test it with calibrated weight loads of 500lbs and 1000lbs in my vehicle. I still need to evaluate the trailer tongue accuracy.
one tip: if you don't see a screen asking for the orientation of the betterweigh during level function: go to apps, delete the cache and files, uninstall the app, restart, reload the app, connect betterweigh, then go to change vehicle, then do the level, then do the calibration.
I believe, this may work for heavier trucks and loads based on the accuracy I observed, but I have not finished testing this device. I have easily worked on this device more than 15 hours to analyze it. The downloads are at 50+, which seems a little new still and maybe why the manufacturer can't yet resolve the issue on my phone due to lack of issues reported. The app still wont operate on my newer Huawei mate 30 pro and also on an Android 7 device. It will work on a Samsung s8.
I should mention vehicle support. This will work on any vehicle. I think originally the app was designed to character read the tags on the vehicle's door jamb (the actual reason I bought it), but since has been scaled back to simply have the user enter the data. It will ask for the GVWR and maximum passenger weights from the tags. If your tags are obliterated, you can find it on internet. This will work on all vehicles.
Despite screenshots of the app on 1/15/2020, the app screens are different now and does not have a brake gain setting function ...yet. I would hope this integrates into their ECHO brake controller.
Pictures will be included on my next review update.
Thank you Kristi and Eric at Curt for helping me work in detail with you on this product. I hope to make this a better product for all.

Ascent 2020 was not recognized and nor the scanning of the VIN.
I entered the VIN manually and it it seem to be working.
After setup I selected the tongue weight and then sat at the back of the car to see if it would pickup my weight. It did a pretty good job. Not exact but close enough.
Next week I will try with our camper and see. That will be the good test.
i was telling me that i was pulling for 12k LBS and with a toug weight ok 100o lbs.
this is impossible as my truck can not handle that weight not even close.
i find it hard to belive my trailer that is 3700 lbs dry and possibly around 4200 full would give me 12K lbs.
not to mention the gages used in the app dont provide clear indication as to the weight.
and don't do like i did read the reviews and say let me try it, i had to pay to ship it back no return lable provided and no refund of the shipping cost. and i even looks like they charged a 20% restocking fee.
Reviewed in Canada on January 19, 2021
(the TowSense said 6200lbs the CAT Scale said 5870lbs which may sound "close" but 300 extra pounds of payload is important sometimes for some loads).
Part of that might be because my suspension is no longer OEM stock and all my queries to Curt Customer Service about whether that can be calibrated or accounted for have gone unanswered.
I will compare it a few more times with actual scales to see if the (error) is constant because that you can work with.
So see this as a bit of gimmic that has limited value in a practical purpose unless it can be calibrated to match an actual measured weight. I could have guessed just as well without spending the money on this.
