I recently bought an Inkbird ITC-308 Digital Temperature Controller 2-Stage Outlet Thermostat to use as part of a bread proofer oven hack. I was so impressed with that unit, that I found other uses for it (cold smoking, hot smoking, BBQ temperature control (via airflow control and fan). I especially liked the ability to use the app, and program independent actions for each of the outlets (turn on/off 2 powered devices based on the information I specify). When my most recent BBQ temperature monitor finally quit working, I came to Amazon and searched for "Inkbird BBQ Thermometer," and I was pleased to discover Inkbird had several models to pick from. I chose this one, based on its features (mainly the WiFi and the 4 independent probes), its high customer ratings/comments and my previous experience with their products.
I also bought an extra "oven probe" and a matching case for it. I received everything, charged it up and have had numerous successful BBQ, smoker and oven cooks, relying on it to monitor oven/BBQ/smoker temperatures and multiple items being cooked (including mixed meats). I like the app very much and use both its pre-programmed functions (both for oven/BBQ cooking temperatures and meat doneness temperatures) and its custom settings and alarms. I especially like how the app graphs temperatures; it's helped me accurately predict when some of those 10 or 12 hour roasts are going to hit the target temperature. It is kinda cool to be at the market miles away and be able to check on my BBQ cook -- more than once, I've called one of my kids and said, "Hey, please toss another piece of oak in the BBQ's firebox for me, kiddo!"
I have recommended this unit to several friends, and at least 2 have bought them since -- we "gush" over this thing when we talk, and we hope once this COVID crude goes away to drink beers at our next BBQ party while raving about our Inkbird to our other friends.
--
Mine suddenly developed a problem with 2 of the 4 probe ports. In short, #1 and #2 quit working during a long cook where I transitioned from the BBQ/smoker to finish up in the oven. The issue was brought to my attention by the app, which notified me the oven was out of the temperature range. I was surprised to discover no temperature readings for the 2 probes. I switched the probes to #3 and #4, and I immediately got results. I finished the cook, enjoyed a great meal, and later that night looked at the unit again. The problem persisted. I tried to power cycle it and a few other things, but the problem kept occurring. Bummer.
I reached out to Inkbird for their recommendations, hoping there was some reset option or secret app function I might use to reboot or otherwise get things working. They got back to me quickly (despite it being the Christmas weekend) and asked me to answer a few questions and send some pics, which I did. One of their staff and I exchanged a half dozen emails within the same hour. In the end, the customer service representative said they'd send me a replacement unit.
I can't explain why my unit developed a problem. These things seem very well built and the unit is rugged. I didn't knock it around or drop it. I'm super-pleased with Inkbird's response. I feel their customer service is first-rate, like their products. I will continue to recommend this and other Inkbird products to my friends, knowing they stand behind their products with a level of customer service that matches the quality of their products.
I'm adding an Inkbird Waterproof Instant Read Thermometer IHT-1P and case to my cart. I'm a fanboy of Inkbird now. I'm going to support them in the only two ways I know how: 1) recommending/reviewing and 2) buying their products. I hope you'll do the same.
The notifications got sorted out long ago and the thermometer is still working great. Still highly recommended.
Edit: 9 month update
Still happy with the thermometer, but Android 11 screwed up my notification settings and I can't get them to work consistently. Not an Inkbird issue.
Edit: 6 month update
I'm still very happy with the Inkbird WIfi. I have used it on several briskets, pork butts, and my first smoked turkey for Thanksgiving. I ran into a small issue when I upgraded my WiFi to a mesh system; the Inkbird uses your phone to set the Wifi and it will not work if your phone is connected to a 5GHz wifi network; the Inkbird can only use 2.4GHz. The solution was to walk further away from my house until my phone switched to the 2.4GHz connection and then do the setup. Since that hiccup, I have had no issues and my thermometer seems to have a better wifi connection. I have been using the BBQ-4T app, not the generic Inkbird one.
I recently purchased a pellet grill and dove into the world of smoking and long and low cooks. My grill has 2 built in probes, but it is not wifi enabled and I wanted to be able to monitor my cooks from my phone. This unit is the easy solution.
The unit itself appears well made and has 4 different colored probes. I like the colored probes; no more trying to trace the probe wires to figure out which temperature you are checking. Pairing to my phone was easy, although I had to exit the app and reopen it after pairing for the device to show up. I did not use InkBird's smarthome app; there is an app specific to the IBBQ-4t that I would recommend you use. After pairing, I calibrated the probes with boiling water. The probes each required about 1.5 degree offset.
The battery life is very good; in my test the battery lasted approximately 47 hours. You can also use the thermometer while charging if you do somehow run out of battery. Temps were stable and in line with my instant read thermometers.
I liked how I was able to set different temperature parameters/alarms for each probe using the app. The thermometer comes with 2 "grill grate" attachments and I used one probe to monitor the grill temperature and make sure that I didn't have a flame out or other issue that if left unfixed, could cause a food safety issue. I tested the responsiveness of the app by creating an alarm for a specific temperature point and then heating up the probe above that point. The app alerted me at the desired temperature within seconds, no matter if my phone was on wifi or cellular data. I also made some suggestions for improving the app and was told that they will be implemented in the future.
I did 2 long cooks with IBBQ-4T, ribs and brisket. For the ribs, I only used it to monitor grill temps. I did the brisket overnight and set the grill probe to alert me if the temp got too high (grease or pellet dust fire) or too low (flame out due to wind, ran out of pellets, etc). I put probes in both the flat and the point and was able to check progress easily. I set a few different alarm points throughout the cook and was quickly notified whenever that specific probe hit that temp.
The only issue I ran into during my overnight cook was that I moved my grill to a different position than I normally use it in (wanted it even further away from the house just in case!) and didn't have good wifi reception. I can't fault the thermometer for that; it's a function of my house layout, construction, and where my router is located. I moved the grill about 10 feet, had rock-sold reception, and had no issues throughout my 16 hour cook.
Like another review mentioned, I did notice that the colored silicon on the probes got discolored during the cooks, but a little scrubbing got them back to where the colors were easily distinguishable.
Overall, I am very happy with the IBBQ-4T and would recommend it without reservation to anyone looking to up their thermometer game.

It now turns out that the wireless connectivity and App are awesome! Unlike previous reviews I have read, I find the app to be user friendly and glitch free. This thermometer allows to do something else than check my smoker. It is possible to set custom temperature ranges or use the preset temperature according.
The magnetic base works really well and the probes are easy to clean.
The only thing I wish was different is the type of plastic used for the thermometer casing itself. Don't get me wrong, it is fully functional, but it feels like one of those cheaper plastics.
In general, this thermometer is awesome! I have absolutely no regrets!
Before doing so, I tested the accuracy of the unit by comparing various Inkbird reads to those of an instant-read Thermapen and to my joy, they were either spot-on or 1 degree different at most. Accuracy is a biggie and when researching my ultimate pick, I read reviews of other similar products being off by up to 10 degrees if the posters were to be believed. So kudos to Inkbird.
The unit comes with 3 food probes and one oven probe. I didn't realize how essential the oven probe was until using it. You set the low and high ranges and the unit will beep if either temp is reached. I had to think about this one at first on my turkey because this high low, IMO, is likely designed for smoker BBQs so you can see if your coal temp gets too hot or reduces to the stage you need to top up the coals for longer cooking situations like multi-hour brisket projects.
Back to my turkey. I set the probe with fictitious high low settings because I was using it in a standard oven and boy am I glad I did. Turns out my oven was running cooler than the oven display panel was indicating. For example, we set the oven to cook at 325D and when the oven beeper sounded to confirm we were now at 325, the Inkbird probe was showing a temp of 309!! So we had to trick out our oven temp and raise it to 340 until the Inkbird probe showed the oven was at 325 - after trial and error made easy by the Inkbird.
Note that I was suspicious as to which device was telling the truth so I used a temperature gun (that I use to check saute pan temps) by opening the oven door and quickly taking a read of the turkey pan before it started to cool. The gun registered within 2 degrees of the Inkbird reading. Thank you Inkbird for eliminating turkey cooking grief whereby we would have ended up cranking the heat to cook the bird in time for guests. So again, I am thankful for the oven probe.
Note re probes - very important to ensure you really push them in the base unit as far as you can and snuggly. They are designed to be snug due to being rainproof I suspect. Small detail, the plastic piece you grip to push in has finger indents to help grip and I love this attention to detail.
Back to the turkey....again. When cooking a turkey, cookbooks suggest taking the temp in either the leg or the breast but the suggested final temps are different for each. By having three food probes, I was able to monitor both the breast temp and the leg temp which was novel to me but again, proved very useful. We cooked our 19 LB bird to 158 and whatched the temp on the Inkbird monitor raise to 169 while it rested on the counter for 20 mins. This level of accuracy resulted in one of the best-cooked turkeys due to cooking to the perfect temp.
So this first use case was a major success but I also need to comment on the service of the seller. The first unit arrived within 2 days and I had a hiccup with it which was inadvertently due to me to some degree. I sent a note to the seller not knowing what to expect. To my surprise, they responded extremely quickly and took care of my issue with lightning speed and actually were a pleasure to deal with due to the personal nature of the correspondence we exchanged. This should be noted because I have at times struggled with decent service with other sellers but was taken aback with how wonderful they were to deal with.
I have not yet used the unit in my smoker but based on the above, this unit has far exceeded my expectations and thus the detailed review. When something works this well, I feel a communal need to share my experience in hopes that it helps others make a good informed decision.
If there is a negative, it is in the instructional guide. It is pretty straight forward but it could be clearer or I could be smarter. But all in all, I figured it out, especially the relevance of the low/high oven setting. Also, the two units are plastic so not sure how well they would hold up if dropped on hard tile, but I don't expect to be doing that and that would be on me if I did. The packaging it comes in is top-notch.
The units both come with rechargeable batteries and a charging cable and were charged 3 of the 4 bars. Did not lose any bar during the 4.5 turkey cooking so battery life appears great.
I did consider a Bluetooth model that you read on your cell phone but too many reviews had spotty reviews re signal strength so I went RF route. No issue here and it really provides exactly what one needs without being "gadgety". However, if you are the type that wants to see a graph of your cooking temperatures over a continuum of time, this unit will not do that but for me, that takes anal to the next level and is not something that would improve my results. I simply need pinpoint accurate temp reads and notifications a such.
Overall, well worth the price, especially if you time the coupon as I did. I definitely see this improving the accuracy of how I cook as I believe nailing the perfect temps gives is an integral part of gourmet results and the Inkbird does exactly that.
One happy camper if you cannot tell by now......
