It’s PERFECT for flat exposed frame. It lasts a very long time and is incredibly durable.
I wouldn’t use it inside door or anything where you’re trying to treat two metal surfaces were punched together - it doesn’t stay liquid and won’t penetrate into the seam before drying. Only products like surface shield should be used like this.
Wear old clothes and expect a lot of overspray. This is a pain to get off anything it lands on, so be smart with application.
Once my lift was installed on the Jeep a few months later, I prepped the frame and parts by spraying with purple power and pressure washing underneath to have all parts clean, the Jeep was brand new so this did not take much effort.
I had bought the four pack of CRC and crawled underneath and applied one coat (two cans) to the entire frame and inside, axles, bolts, suspension parts, etc. Only thing I didn't hit was the exhaust. Instructions said to apply one coat and let it cure for 10-12 hours. After the first coat I parked it in inside my garage and let it cure. Then applied a second coat the following day (two cans) and also let that cure for 10-12 hours. I did not drive it at all during the cure time. I did all this three years ago.
Three years of constant road trips, beach trips, fishing trips, beach overnight camping trips all with exposure to saltwater spray and humidity. With the only upkeep I did was rinse the frame and under carriage with a pressure washer the following day depending on exposure to saltwater (driving in saltwater). Guess what NO RUST. I developed only small patina on the pinch welds of the frame which is common as the welding used is a different steel makeup.
Other than that I have no rust on my vehicle. Also frequent pressure washing does not get this stuff off, you need to buy a special solvent that CRC sells to remove, this is a good thing as pressure washing helps to get rid of sand and unlike other products that stay tacky, they will either wash off every pressure wash or sand and dirt will cling to it, this product dries to a hard layer of wax where sand and water just slough off. After three years I could still feel that there was a light layer of the product still protecting the metal, it feels like thin wax and is invisible once it fully cures.
I emailed CRC asking how long I could expect this product to last as an undercoating, they advised me two years. So I just recently bought another four pack and reapplied as of yesterday. Buy with confidence this stuff truly works as advertised. I wish I could buy it in a bigger container and some type of better spray nozzle for easier application but CRC does not offer this. Also know that when you first coat your Jeep it dries to a brownish amber color which hilariously looks like rust. It will smell and appear unsightly for the first week but once it fully cures the amber coating goes away and so does the smell.
Very happy that this product is protecting my investment in an area that reduces vehicle lifespans to ten years.
When I lived in the UK, I used a product called Waxoyl. It was very similar to this CRC product, being a waxy material suspended in a volatile petroleum-based liquid. Spray it on and let it spread and thicken through evaporation. It worked great in those wet and icy heavily-salted UK road conditions. I even applied it to the crankcase and gearbox of my motorcycle to stop the shiny aluminum corroding over the winter. When warm it flows and self-heals if wiped/scratched. Wiping it off with mineral spirits in Spring and the alloy shined up great! No abrasive polish required. During winter though, it did look like crap - filthy, with dirt and grime embedded in it!
I hadn't seen such a product in the US until I saw the Project Farm video on YouTube, comparing rust prevention products. CRC came out on top and my own experience with a similar product confirmed this is the one I wanted. It seems to be good old Cosmoline, but in a spray can.
I used 2 cans on each vehicle and that was just enough for my needs. If you are going to really cover the whole of the underside for total protection, you might need 6 or more cans for each. I lifted the SUV onto jack stands, but just crawled under the truck. As a fine mist is created, I wore a mask, hat, latex gloves, face shield and old clothes. You really don't want to breathe that stuff in (the mask was coated in a film of Cosmoline after I was done) and it'll coat anything in the mist. My garage floor is now a little sticky!
I simply lay to one side and sprayed away from myself onto the rusty areas. There was no damp or dirt after recent rain, so I did no prep on the areas to be coated. One can did annoyingly leak a little from the aerosol button while spraying, but the others were just like using a spray paint can.
Initially, the yellowy liquid will run and drip if you apply it too heavily, but in warm weather, it will start to stiffen fairly quickly and a second coat can be applied, if required. Heavy is better anyway. It'll leave a strong, but I think pleasant, Cosmoline odor in the garage until all the liquid has evaporated. That smell will take a few days to go, though the wax itself is pretty well "cured" after just a few hours. A dull, waxy film (yellow if noticeable - see attached photo) will be left to protect the metal.
I have no doubt the CRC Corrosion Inhibitor will do its job and protect the vehicles from the rigors of the coming winter and likely into the following winter. The Amazon price of about $8 each for a box of 4 was the best "per can" price I found anywhere, available in just a couple days.
