Restore headlights by hand with Meguiar’s Basic Headlight Restoration Kit
If you have clear plastic headlights that aren’t looking as clear as they used to and you don’t want to work with a drill or tools, Meguiar’s has the perfect solution with the Basic Headlight Restoration Kit. This kit comes with everything you need to remove defects in uncoated clear plastics making headlights crystal clear again. Fine finishing pads work to effectively remove light oxidation, cloudiness, and surface scratches by hand. Follow with the included PlastX Clear Plastic Cleaner Polish and premium microfiber towel to further refine clear plastics and bring up brilliant optical clarity. Ultimately this headlight restoration kit is a quick and easy, cost effective solution to restore headlights to a crystal clear finish without the need of a drill.
What’s included in the Basic Headlight Restoration Kit
- 4 ounce bottle of PlastX Clear Plastic Cleaner Polish – This clear plastic cleaner and plastic polish in one, when used with the included microfiber towel, removes remaining haze from the fine Sanding Pads and brings up optical clarity.
- 3 double sided Sanding Pads – Square cleaning pads to remove yellowing, clouding and oxidation while preparing the surface for PlastX Clear Plastic Cleaner Polish.
- 1 – 16” x 16” Microfiber Towel – Premium quality microfiber towel for applying PlastX Clear Plastic Cleaner Polish and removal of the residue that remains.
You Provide:
- Masking tape.
- Water (in a cup & a spray bottle).
Tips for using the kit
- For the best results, apply to a clean, cool and dry headlight in the shade.
- Shake PlastX Clear Plastic Cleaner Polish well.
- Cover adjacent body panels with masking tape prior to sanding.
- Soak the 3 Sanding Pads in a cup of water for 1 minute, then locate the #1 pad.
- Mist the headlight lens with water and sand in an up and down motion with the #1 pad.
- Rinse sanding pads and lens with water often to extend the life of the pads.
- Once the lens has a uniform frosted appearance, switch to the #2 pad, sanding in a side-to-side motion.
- Move onto the #3 pad, sanding in an up and down motion.
- Final sanding step, flip the pad to #4 side and use in a side-to-side motion.
- Dry the lens.
- Apply Meguiar’s PlastX polish to the included microfiber towel and polish thoroughly until no scratches remain and the lens is clear.
- Wipe off excess polish.
- Not intended for use on LCD, navigation screens, plastic convertible top windows or motorcycle windscreens.
After fully restoring your headlights consider applying a protective coating like Meguiar’s Keep Clear Headlight Coating – G17804 to maintain clarity for up to a year.

Works really well
I was surprised, took about 20 min per light, make sure the lens stays wet, I used a squirt bottle full of water and kept it soaked, stop after about 2 passes and rinse it with the water to see where you are at in the process, #1 use for 3 passes, #2 for 2 passes and 3 & 4 one pass each, then polish, came out nice, hope it lasts

It works but the Meguiar's Clear coat is needed too!

The Basic kit works but for the almost like new look I suggest you also purchase the Meguiar's Clear Coat Protection Spray. The results looked so patchy before I sprayed my headlights with the Meguiar's clear coat spray. The Basic kit takes time and if you don't have 2 hours to dedicate to the hand sanding it won't be worth it. I didn't sand enough so I had what looked a mess when I got to the polish part. The Basic kit does not come with the Meguiar's Clear Coat Spray so go to Autozone (cheaper there) if you decide to get this kit. The picture is after I sanded, polished and sprayed with the clear coat. 2008 BMW 328i headlights pictured.

20 minutes of work with this did improved my headlight clarity overall, but it was still quite hazy.
I did one side, then decided to replace them both with new headlights, which I found here on Amazon for $40 per pair with bulbs! ('98 F150)
Depending on your make and model, it might be worth it to just replace them as I did.
Photo shows, before, after and replacement. While the kit helped, you can see what a difference the new lights made.

Requires 'elbow grease', but well worth it!

The headlight lenses on my daily driver have been cloudy since I bought it in May 2020. A friend recommended MEGUIAR'S G2960 Basic Headlight Restoration Kit. It took me about an hour or so to go through the process to restore the headlights, but the difference was substantial & I was quite impressed! I did not want to have to deal with the kit that requires a power drill, concerned that I might damage the car & paint, so my expectations were kind of low. The G2960 kit well exceeded my expectations & then some. I would give this kit 6 stars, if I could.
