About this item
- SECURELY GRIP AND REMOVE A WIDE RANGE OF FILTERS – The Motivx Tools MX2330 oil filter wrench removes small 2.5” - 3.25” diameter traditional spin-on or canister style oil filters. The wrench features a tooth style design for a secure grip that won't slip and lets you easily and safely remove the filter.
- HEAVY DUTY CONSTRUCTION – This removal tool features a .050” captured spring as opposed to the flimsy .020” spring found on other wrenches. The jaws are built tough using nickel plated 4130 chromoly steel and attached to the 3/8” thick solid steel top plate. Low profile design gives you access to tight access spots.
- EASY TO USE – Simply slide the jaws of the wrench over the filter while slightly rotating to the right (tighten). Once the wrench is seated in place on the filter, use a ratchet and 3/8" extension to begin ratcheting the wrench counter-clockwise (loosen). The jaws will grip the stuck filter tightly and begin loosening it.
- PROFESSIONAL QUALITY - Motivx Tools is a specialty tool company located in the United States and we take great pride in our products. These oil filter wrenches are backed by a limited lifetime warranty and excellent customer service.
- IMPORTANT NOTES - The tool is for oil filter removal only, NOT for installation. Not for use on chrome plated oil filters or cartridge style filters where you have to remove a plastic or metal cap to expose the filter element. For larger spin-on filter sizes (greater than 3.5") use the Motivx Tools MX2331.

Product Description
Excellent tool choice for removing spin-on style oil filters, especially those that are over-tightened or are in hard to access locations Fits oil filters with a minimum diameter of 2.5" (64mm) and a maximum diameter of 3.25" (82mm) Patented jaw design provides an excellent grip on the filter Extra heavy duty design includes .050" captured springs as opposed to .020" springs used on similar tools Made from durable materials Tips For Using This Wrench This tool is excellent for removing over-tightened filters or those that are hard to access. Â This tool is only for removal, it can NOT be used to install a filter. Â Only use it on disposable spin-on filters, not on cartridge style filters that use a metal or plastic re-usable housings as the sharp teeth will cause damage. Â Here's how to use it in hard to reach locations where you still have access to the end of the filter: Install the wrench on the end of an extension that's long enough to reach the filter. Â Set the ratchet to the tighten, or right hand direction. Â Push the wrench against the back of the filter while rotating it the in right hand direction. Â This will cause the jaws to open and the wrench will slip down over the filter. Â Now reverse the ratchet and turn it to the left to remove the filter. * "this type" meaning the same type of filter wrench as this Motivx wrench.
Long version:
I bought this tool because I was unable to remove an oil filter from my wife's Buick Enclave. I tried a lot of filter wrenches I already had and also a pair of filter pliers. It would not budge. I was extremely frustrated with the situation. Whoever the tech at the dealer was that put this thing on thought it was a bolt, not a filter. It was way over-tightened.
When I found this during my search for a solution, I posted a question and I got an answer from Motivx within a couple of hours. I bought it immediately. I am unbelievably happy that I did.
On my Enclave, you can only get 1 hand down to the filter. When you do, you can't see. I only have room for about a quarter turn or less. I was unsure how I was going to make this tool work when I removed it from the packaging. The way it works is you turn the "wrench" clockwise to expand the jaws enough to go over the filter end, and then start ratcheting. With my very limited room in this auto, I thought it was going to be difficult. It wasn't. Took me about 5 minutes to figure it out and remove the filter.
Attach the wrench to the socket. Move the socket to the tighten setting (not loosen). Why? So that I could use my right thumb and hold the jaws all the way open without the ratchet engaging. Lowered my right hand with the thumb holding the jaw into the small opening and slid it over the filter. Then released my thumb. Carefully moved my hand to the back of the ratchet to change the direction (twice, when I did this, I knocked the wrench off). Then I was free to start ratcheting. This thing grabs! And it didn't slip back when I had to ratchet back when I used up my miniscule turning of about a quarter turn or less.
I saw many questions asking if it cuts the filter. Well, my filter was really really really tight and this wrench did not slip (all my other wrenches did slip) and it did not dig into the filter. It didn't care that I had partially dented the filter earlier when I tried to use filter pliers. My other wrenches didn't even try to work once I had done that.
If my description of how I used it didn't make sense, don't worry. It works. I didn't completely understand either until the product came and I put it on my ratchet. I might try to make a video to demonstrate.
While on the topic of packaging, thank you so much for minimal packaging too!
I had scouted out several specialized tools before purchasing this one. I must say, that the finish used at the time of purchase for the arms/grippers (nickel plating) kinda had me wondering if the tool would work out, as it seemed to somehow make me think of a thinner gauge/weaker metal. However, while somewhat skeptical, the tool had good reviews, and everything else had failed, so I decided to try it out.
When I tried it out, not only did it work (minimum expectation), but it allowed me to remove the filter incredibly easily (above expectations). From the outset, it was very easy to attach and gripped the filter firmly, which was a big issue in other tools, including other under-the-filter types. After the initial heavy torque I had to apply to get it going, it remained attached to the filter (didn't slip, deform, etc). It remained well-behaved and attached to the filter (with torque) while I loosened the misbehaving filter the rest of the way (until hand-turnable). As these things go, there was some leakage that spilled down on to the tool, but the relatively straightforward design allowed me to easily clean it up.
All in all, one of my better tool purchases, and, given the relatively high frequency of oil changes, one likely to see some heavy use in the future. If you're considering this or a similar tool from your local home improvement/auto joint for a stubborn filter, I would advise you to choose this one, and possibly save yourself a wasted trip and wasted money (plus another trip to return a broken tool). Currently, this tool is also offered through Prime, so shipping can be easily expedited, if that is a requirement for you.
My one suggestion to the manufacturer: I would play up the strength of the arms/grippers. To me, an alternate finish (particularly, a different color, say, black or dark grey) might communicate this well. Alternately, something like printing/painting the material name on the side of the tool might also be helpful. Granted, some of this information is present in the details of the listing (at least as of the writing of this review), but I feel it is somewhat buried, and that was my one hesitation at the time of purchase, despite the good reviews.
