- ✅ LONG LASTING PROTECTION - POR-15 Top coat has exceptional long-term sheen and color retention, with a hammer tough finish that won’t crack or peel. It can be applied directly to metal substrates or previously painted surfaces without need for primer or undercoat. Formulated to form a robust barrier that sheds moisture.

Surface Preparation All surfaces must be clean and free of all dirt, loose rust, oil, grease, wax, soap, loose paint and any other matter.
Previously Painted Areas Scuff surface with 320 grit sand paper. Use POR-15 Cleaner Degreaser and POR-15 Metal Prep. Let surface dry thoroughly.
Bare Steel or Aluminum Clean and prep surface then let dry thoroughly. For ultimate protection apply POR-15 RustPreventive Coating after surface preparation and then apply POR-15 Top Coat.
Application Stir POR-15 Top Coat before and during use, DO NOT SHAKE. Using a pouring spout, dispense a portion into a separate container and seal can at once, keeping lid and grooves clean. Do not paint out of can. Apply POR-15 Top Coat in two thin covering coats.
Spray Gun: Use 25-30 lbs (170Kpa-210pa) pressure for normal gloss.
Roller Use all-purpose short nap phenolic core roller.
Dry time It cures to touch in 30-60 minutes. Second coat can be applied in 2-72 hours, depending on ambient temperature and humidity. POR-15 Top Coat can take 3-4 days to reach maximum hardness, and longer in temperatures below 55°F (15°C).
Cleanup Do not put leftover paint back into can. Clean all equipment immediately after use with POR-15 Solvent. Flush out all fluid lines and carefully clean pressure pots. Use clean solvent only. It is also good practice to periodically clean the spray tip or the fluid tip / air cap combination during the course of the working day.
Aerosol Spray
Surface Preparation All surfaces must be clean and free of all dirt, loose rust, oil, grease, wax, soap, loose paint and any other matter.
Previously Painted Areas Scuff surface with 320 grit sand paper. Use POR-15 Cleaner Degreaser and POR-15 Metal Prep. Let surface dry thoroughly.
Bare Steel or Aluminum Clean and prep surface then let dry thoroughly. For ultimate protection apply POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating after surface preparation and then apply POR-15 Top Coat.
Application Protect surrounding areas from spray mist. If being used to topcoat POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating, spray while POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating is dry to the touch with slight finger drag, normally 2 – 6 hours. If POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating has dried, wait 24 hours then lightly sand or scuff surface with pad or 320 sand paper. For best results, use when surface to be painted, spray can, and outside temperature, are between 60˚F and 90˚F (21˚C and 32˚C). Shake can at least one minute before and occasionally during use. Spray surface with steady, even strokes at a distance of 6 to 10 inches. Several light coats give a better finish than one heavy coat.
Dry time It cures to touch in 30-60 minutes. Second coat can be applied in 1-24 hours, depending on ambient temperature and humidity. POR-15 Top Coat can take 3-4 days to reach max hardness, and longer in temperatures below 55°F (15°C).
Cleanup To prevent clogs in spray nozzle, hold can upside down and spray until clear gas appears. Completely empty cans may be recycled or disposed of with regular trash. Dispose of partially empty cans responsibly. DO NOT puncture, incinerate or compact.

First, you are well-advised to completely read the instructions included with POR-15 before you get started! And if you take nothing else I'm writing with you, at least heed this advice: be absolutely certain to cover yourself head-to-toe BEFORE applying POR-15! Put on an old long sleeve T-shirt & some jogging sweats or an old pair of pants that you don't care about. (Trust me, they'll be trashed by the time you're through, depending on the size of your project.) Alternately, you can buy one of those 1-piece painter's suits sold at most paint, autoparts & big box hardware stores. Yeah, they're hot & sorta stifling, but it sure beats having this stuff bond to your skin for a week or two. (Don't ask how I know. LOL) Just remember, if it gets on your skin it will NOT wash off no matter how much scrubbing you do - short of scrubbing your friggin' skin off! POR-15 will have to wear off, like a dye. Don't say you weren't warned! And speaking of covering yourself... if you're in a garage you ought to make sure your project is covered underneath, too. Sit your project on / roll your vehicle chassis onto a clean hole-free tarp. It's cheap insurance. Otherwise, if you drip or splash any POR-15 on your floor you'll be scraping & chiseling it off. NOT fun. I still have patches in my garage more than 3 years after glopping the stuff on, and having it land in/on places I never intended!
The POR-15 guys recommend some prep work for heavily-rusted projects. They also offer a spray for new or clean surfaces that's designed to chemically "etch" the metal for better coating retention. I initially just used a grinder with a wire wheel cup attachment to strip away the larger scale & rust deposits. After some consideration I decided to go ahead and have the entire chassis professionally sandblasted. (This was a wise choice, as it exposed how completely rusted-through the rear arms of my CJ frame were. Repair required fabricating & welding in replacement steel pieces.) Anyhoo... I applied 2 coats on the Jeep's frame. POR-15 applies easily and can literally be brushed or rolled right on top of existing rust. After almost 3 years the POR-15 is holding up remarkably well, and though it took time to do the job properly it has been worth the effort.
One last piece of advice: if you have any of the stuff left in the can when you finish, be sure to apply a piece of plastic wrap (Saran Wrap) between the can & the lid! If any of this stuff gets in the groove and you just tamp the lid shut, you will have effectively glued the lid on permanently. It's best to cover the rim of the can with some masking or painter's tape or buy one of those re-usable rubber snap-on pouring spouts (with the sealable spout lids) and just pour a small amount into a disposable bucket or pail, refilling as you go. It may take a little longer this way, but it will help keep POR-15 from drying out prematurely if the pail is just left open. It will also help avoid the frustrating "lid welding" mistake should any of it get into the lid groove.
BOTTOM LINE: Yes, POR-15 is kind of expensive, but if you have a project you're working on and you want it to last ...it's money well-spent.

I have a mechanic friend who says this stuff is great .this is my first time using it .
I applied 3 coats of the por15 silver as my base over sandblasted square steel tubing .
The tubing is my cooler rack that I use for surf casting on long Island. It's out in the sun
and weather 24/7 so I applied 3 additional coats of por15 topcoat in chassis black .
I followed the directions to the letter .I even emailed the manufacturer to clarify the ideal
window to apply the topcoat over the base coat .they returned my email in less than 1 hour
On 4th of July weekend .that's great customer service.
I would not recommend using the cheap "chip" brushes .they leave hairs everywhere .I spent
More time removing the hairs that fell out of the chip brush than I did applying the paint on my first coat !
Get a decent quality brush .or use a roller .I used the por15 spray paint for the final topcoat
to give a smooth finish .I felt like although the spray can gave me the smoothest finish ,it
Was not the best value for spraying 1" tubing .it needed 2 spray cans to complete 1 full coat
On the cooler rack .I used a little more than 3/4 of a quart for the previous 5 coats .the paint flows
well enough with a brush or roller .the silver base coat flowed out like glass with a brush and roller.
The topcoat did not flow out as well but I applied it a few degrees below the maximum temp .
the real question is , will it hold up ?
I'm sure this project will put this product to the test .
Powder coat lasted about 5 years .with heavy use.
Rustoleum lasted almost 3 years .with almost no use
Por 15 stay tuned ...
