Product Description
The Platypus GravityWorks 2.0L Complete Water Filter Kit for camping, backpacking, and emergency preparedness is a versatile, adaptable water filter solution, compatible with a variety of hydration vessels, including hydration bladders and water bottles from MSR, Nalgene, Klean Kanteen, Hydroflask, Camelback, and more. Ultralight (weighs as little as 6.6 ounces in minimalist configuration), and packable to the size of a 1-liter bottle, it’s ideal for filtering water for 1-4 people while hiking, camping, or trekking. The replaceable hollow-fiber microfilter cartridge filters up to 1,500 gallons of water, and meets EPA and NSF guidelines for removal of 99.9999% of bacteria and 99.9% of protozoa, including giardia, cryptosporidium, E. coli, salmonella, and cholera. The water filtration system is easy to use almost anywhere, by scooping water from a lake, river, stream into the 2.0-liter dirty water reservoir, and suspending above a bottle or other clean water reservoir. Water flows through the walls of the bundled fibers at rate of 1.5 liters/minute, leaving impurities behind, without the use of pumps, batteries, moving parts, or chemicals. It’s also easy to maintain in the field, backflushing in just four seconds to clean and restore performance. The Platypus GravityWorks 2.0L Complete Water Filter Kit Includes a 2-liter dirty water reservoir, 2-liter Platy bottle, hollow-fiber filter, hoses, universal bottle adapter, push/pull cap adapter, and storage bag. Made in the USA.

The product parts are all made very well and of quality materials. Even the tubes are very high quality. Adapters are included to fill MANY types of containers, but anything can be filled right from the tube, that is what we do. Take only the parts with you that you need. The collapsible clean water bag even comes with a pop up sports bottle like cap so it becomes a 2L water bottle when needed!
Take along a set of purification tablets/powder (virus killing) for use if all you can find is questionable water... and you are set!!
IT IS ULTRA FAST! Compared to my old filter, this is lightning fast. Simple to use. Quick to set up. I bought the kit for 2.0 liters, but honestly, it's so fast, I don't see why anyone would buy the larger size just because they had a couple more people. It takes less than 3 minutes to filter 2.0 liters. Then we transfer to our camelbacks and treat with iodine tablets as an extra precaution. And in another 3 minutes, we've got another 2.0 liters.
The ONLY thing I don't like is that I haven't been able to find a way to fit the filter itself into the mesh carrying case with all the rest of the kit. I wish that the mesh case was a smidge bigger for this reason. But that's a convenience thing, not a function of the kit thing.
We tested this on our first trip only carrying enough water to get us to the site + a smidge extra. We hiked in 90+ degree heat in Arizona, and knew we'd burn through a lot of water. We got to the site which we knew had an 8 foot deep pool of water, and got to work using this kit. The water we filtered was flowing, but had all sorts of animal life in it (fishing spiders, frogs, tadpoles, water beetles) and is visited by various wildlife such as coatimundi. It also had plenty of plant growth within the pool. So we wanted to/needed to filter the water and didn't want to rely on boiling for 5 minutes. It's been 4 days since the trip and we suffered no illness, so if the water was tainted, the filter did it's job and got it all out. We'll be taking this on all our hiking/backpacking trips either knowing we need water, or just in case we need water.
If you have never used a Platypus Gravity Works system before, the photo makes it look more complicated than it is. While the carrying case and additional adapters are a nice touch, you probably wont use most of them, ever. All you need to bring with you is the dirty bag, tube and filter, and something to carry your clean water in (it doesn't have to be the clean bag shown in the photo). I usually just filter water straight into my Nalgene or plastic water bottle, but I do bring the clean bag along and use it if water sources are scarce or if I want to stock up for camp.
Both the clean and dirty bags are very durable and the clean bag stands upright on its own when it is filled at least 1/4 of the way. Leaving additional accessories at home will allow you to shave some weight, and you can also cut some grams by removing the gray rubber ends from the filter, which serve no purpose unless you plan on mounting it to a bottle, if you are OCD about your pack weight.
