Installation is fairly straightforward and can be accomplished by most anyone with a drill and basic hand tools Actual installation time was about 2.5 hours. The paint that comes on the racks is, in my opinion, of poor quality and I suggest that you paint the racks with a good grade of paint prior to installation on your vehicle. I did paint mine prior to installation, but several months after I put them on, rust stains started appearing at points where parts joined on the individual bars. I am attaching pictures,
I recently decided to trade my F250 on a new vehicle and as a result I removed the racks. Upon removal, I discovered what caused the rust stains on the joints. When I installed the racks, they appeared to have enough points for water to drain from inside the uprights. However, none of the base plates actually had drain holes and as a result, the upright sections of the racks filled with rain water which would leak at the joints and would cause the rust stains. The solution to this problem is to drill a 1/8 inch hole through the bottom of each base plate into the upright bars. This will allow rain, snow, and other condensation to drain and will prevent the rust stained joints. If you drill the holes prior to repainting the racks, you will prevent rust from forming around the drain holes.
I have re-installed the racks on a Ford F150 and they fit both the F150 and F250 equally well. Since the racks were rust stained around the joints, I repainted them prior to re-installation and subsequent to drilling base plate drain holes. These racks were rated for loads of up to six hundred pounds. I used the racks to carry Kayaks each winter on trips of about 1200 miles each way. They are excellent for carrying Kayaks, though loading Kayaks is difficult for one average person. I have carried 12 foot dimension lumber on the racks and pushed the 600 pound weight rating on several occasions with no problem.
I believe that these racks are one of the better choices in pickup racks because they are well made and will enable you to carry Kayaks or other long items with your truck, even if the bed on your truck is short. The price is reasonable and the seller promptly shipped my order. The only issues I have found with the racks is the poor grade of paint that they are coated with from the manufacturer and the lack of drain holes in the base plates. However, given the overall quality of the racks and the reasonable price, I would still rate the bars 5 stars because to get a better set of racks, a person would have to spend substantially more money.
A word about installation: The base plates on the racks are heavy steel. I used 4 different 3/8 inch bits to drill a total of eight holes to mount the racks. I would suggest that you have several 1/8 inch bits available when you drill the drain holes in the base plates. On my vehicles, I had to carefully locate the base plates on the bed rails to insure that I had adequate room for base plate fasteners on the underside of the bed rails.

This rack was very easy to put together. As other reviewers have mentioned, it comes with no instructions, but if you need instructions to figure out how to slide five pieces of metal tubing together, per unit, you might want to reconsider installing this yourself. Those who dissed the quality of the set screw threads most likely tried to power the heck out of screwing them in and stripped them, themselves. I found everything on this unit top-notch, including all threads. There is no need to apply much force when you put the unit together. As a matter of fact, you do NOT want to connect everything tightly until each unit is in place on your truck rail. Once it's in place, you can snug things up, but that's it. The force on this unit is downward, obviously, when things are on it, so unless you're planning on being in a tornado or hurricane and having winds try to wrench this thing upwards, forget torquing the heck out of your set screws. Since parts may need to be twisted a bit to get each unit to set perfectly flush on your rails, you have another reason to not tighten things until everything is seated to your satisfaction. You can expand the center rail as long as you have not over-tightened, prior to final installation. If you need to put three ladders on this unit, as I do, you really want to make sure that the center rail is open as wide as possible. Again, if you tighten everything before installation, you will not get extra inches out of the center rail. Set the unit, expand your center rail to the point where the braces still sit on your truck rails, then tighten the center rail, and then bolt your side braces to your truck rail. The company only sends two bolts per brace. There are three holes. Go to a hardware store and buy four more bolts, nuts and washers. I used the washers on the tops, only. The holes in the side braces are positioned in such a way that if you have a plastic liner or thick spray-in coating, you will not be able to fit the washers on the bottom side of the bolt. That was frustrating, as I can see if there is any play in the bolts, over the coming years, the holes in your truck rail may bend and expand resulting in possible failure, as in the nuts popping through and releasing the bolts. As mentioned, though, since the force is directed downward, you should not see your rack go flying off into traffic, hopefully. Obviously, check your installation bolts, every now and then. When you slide your ladders on and off you should be able to tell if anything is loosening up. Good luck. UPDATE, 6/8/13: The original, allen head bolts that came with this unit are already heavily rusted. We hardly have had any rain since I installed this unit. This speaks to very low quality hardware. I will replace these bolts with either galvanized or stainless ones, and that should solve the problem. I am concerned that the rest of the unit may be constructed of like-quality metals. That would not bode well for this unit's future durability. I will update as the situation merits.
The good: Nice-looking, sturdy, easy to install, adjustable for different height/cab clearance as well as different width beds.
The not as good: as many other reviewers have noted, there are chips on these racks right out of the box that will rust soon. There also are a couple gaps in the welds where the base of the bars meet the mounting plate. I have noticed a 1-2 mpg decrease in fuel economy on the highway with these racks installed in the high-clearance configuration.
These racks give me total confidence while driving 70 mph in my 2014 Silverado double cab with my 17 foot, 80ish pound canoe strapped to them. I mounted the racks using C-clamps instead of drilling into my truck. Easy install. With the c-clamps, I don't think I will be able to use a tonneau cover while the racks are on. If you drill and bolt the racks to your truck, then you could probably use a tonneau cover, as long as it fits between the sides of the bed and not over the sides.
All in all, great racks, especially for the price. I would buy them again.
So, with a few tweaks, I have exactly what I want. Great quality of manufacture, good looking , functional and reasonable pricing. Especially like the tie off cleats.
