I purchased the first one for my wife as a Christmas gift for her Murano, as the factory horn wasn't very loud at all. I wired it up along with the factory horns (to retain the chirp when using the remote to lock and unlock the car). All 3 horns (the 2 factory and the Wolo) work together without issue. The only thing I had to do was swap the 15 amp horn fuse for a 20 and everything was set. After hearing it several times, I knew I needed it for my car.
I commute 5 days a week, 25 miles each way to and from work. I have had many near misses with people who don't know how to drive, shouldn't be driving, don't check blind spots, and generally either signal as they are changing lanes or just drift without a signal. That was motivation enough to get a dashcam (that's a review for another time) as well as a louder horn. I installed the same one in my Impala along with the factory GM horns and had the same results. Nice and loud, noticeable to the moron drivers. This horn has prevented more than it's fair share of accidents. Swapped the 15 amp horn fuse for the 20 amp, and have had no issues.
I'm not sure if the other reviews got a defective product, aren't as savvy as they thought they were in wiring it up, or just wanted to feel important showing off their highly tuned ears in describing the sound frequency produced. This horn is by no means loud like a train horn or a dedicated air horn similar to what actual big rigs are equipped with, but it is plenty loud when installed properly and produces a good, deep, authoritative sound. Would highly recommend this product. Would also recommend installing it with someone that knows what they are doing so as not to create a bunch of whiny low star reviews due to lack of proper installation.
This is what is recommended:
Install the provided relay to your positive battery post and connect horn BEFORE mounting! [you must supply 16 ga wire]
If you have a problem, contact Wolo directly for replacement.
If it works fine, then install horn according to directions and blast away.
This horn was recommended to me [Ford F250] because of the relative ease of installation--it's a little larger than one's fist--and its sound. It's low frequency like a big rig. No bulky air compressor/tank to mount, no finding space for a long trumpet, no drilling into the roof.
I will order thru Amazon, as Wolo charges retail [@$20 more] plus shipping [@$19]. I will update after installation!
UPDATE 10/13/12 I installed the horn vertically on a strut that supports the front bumper so that I could use the origional horn wires. I tested the horn before installing, and it worked [I used a direct wire connection to the battery w/out the relay to test.]
The horn is louder and a better sound than the origional, but not "3X louder" as advertised. It's been a week now, and no problems. Final assesment: It's worth the money, but if you really want a HUGE sound [and have the finances and space], I believe that you have to get a compressor system and large trumpets. I like that I could use my orgional wires and my steering wheel pressure switch--not a separate switch to activate the Wolo. Youtube has several videos of crazies who have installed big horns on their vehicles.
UPDATE 10/29/12 I dropped into a truck supply store in N. Cal and met the PIAA 8511 "Superior Bass Horn". THAT is the horn I should have purchased [and might yet]. Available on Amazon for about the same price as the Wolo, it has TWO horns for a more piercing sound, but at 330 and 400 Hz, the effect nice and low like a truck horn should be. Or put them on your Honda and SOUND like a big-rig!
UPDATE 11/8/13 I've corrected my error of db [decibels] to Hz [hertz] above. I DID install the PIAA 8511 and gave the Wolo to my son. Very happy with it--just make sure that your connections are waterproof. I had a little difficulty after the 1st rainstorm....
Top reviews from other countries
Gives a very lour deep 'truck' like sound. This and the Stebel nautilus are about as loud as you get in an all in one horn.
Glad to find them on Amazon, they have been difficult to get at a good price. I paid a lot more for my last one. For best results use a relay with thick wire direct to the battery (via a 30A fuse). Connecting to your cars existing horns wires may blow the fuse or give the horn less current than it needs.
