Handy Gauge - Not Perfect

Handy Gauge - Not Perfect
When looking for a propane tank fuel gauge you need to first decide which type you need. If you have just one or two propane tanks that you normally leave attached to whatever you are using (gas grill, etc.) until it runs empty, then an inline pressure gauge will be more practical. You can buy a propane tank pressure gauge to add to an existing propane tank or you can buy propane tanks with a gauge already installed. Just remember if you get a tank with a built in gauge you will have to get the tanks filled instead of exchanging them. When I say an inline gauge is more practical in the example above it is because with the Cuisinart CTG-120 Lift & Look Propane Tank Gauge you have to decouple the propane tank from the source and then lift the tank using the Cuisinart gauge so that it can get an accurate weight measurement. (More below about this.)Now if you have one or more propane tanks that you regularly unhook from the source for moving, storage, etc., then a fuel gauge like this Cuisinart CTG-120 Lift & Look Propane Tank Gauge may be the better solution. With the tank already unhooked from the source you simply lift the tank off the ground and the Cuisinart propane gauge shows you approximately how full the tank is. I'll explain how this works next.Firstly the Cuisinart Lift & Look Propane Tank Gauge is merely a spring scale, very similar to a fish spring scale. But instead of showing you weight in pounds it has a graph on the gauge with 5 main sections that range from Empty to Full.Math Time! 🤓 An average empty 20-pound propane fuel tank weighs roughly 17 pounds.Propane tanks have the empty weight stamped in the handle (pic below). On two of my tanks the weight listed was TW - 16.6 LB (TW = tare weight).Propane weighs 4.2 lbs. per gallon. So 4.6 gallons of propane weighs 19.44 lbs. (4.2lbs per gallon x 4.6 gallons of propane).Add the 19.44 lbs of propane to the empty weight of the propane tank at 17 lbs and you get 36.44 lbs.As you can imaging it would be pretty easy to tell if you're picking up an empty propane tank at 17 lbs or a full tank at roughly 36.44 lbs. It's the increments in between that would be harder to tell.OK, let's get to the Cuisinart Tank Gauge itself. Firstly it arrives sealed in plastic, you will definitely need scissors or a sharp knife to open the packaging. On first impressions the gauge appears heavy duty and I didn't smell anything unusual with the rubber handle as some people have written about. The propane tank hook is plenty beefy so I don’t see where that would ever bend. The handle that you use to lift with is big enough to hold with 3 fingers (see pic) on average sized hand. (Remenber you'll be picking up anywhere from a 17 lb to 36 1/2 lb propane tank using 3 fingers or less.)The gauge portion could be better as much of it is taking up by a large Cuisinart logo and the numbers are rather small. Plus more than likely you'll be looking at the gauge from top down as you hold up the tank so the numbers on the scale will be upside down. However it is pretty easy to tell how full the tank is by looking at the gauge segments. The first segment is a light gray and the following segments range from light green to a dark green. Also, It would be much nicer if the segments went from more contrasting colors such as green to red. This gauge also features a retractable tape measure for some reason. It has no use for figuring how full you're propane tank is, but could possibly come in handy. Unfortunately the tape measure is pretty flimsy and on first use mine would not retract and was permanently stuck in the out position.Bottom line the Cuisinart CTG-120 Propane Tank Gauge is a pretty decent gauge for the price. It is easy to use and after testing I found it to be fairly accurate. However the gauge could be less cluttered and easier to read and then there is the issue with the tape measure. If not for the broken tape measure I would have kept mine.If you found this information useful I would greatly appreciate it if you would click the “Yes” button below.
