How to Make the Perfect Espresso
|
|
|
|
---|---|---|---|
To start, unscrew the top part of the espresso maker with the handle from the bottom part of the espresso maker and remove the funnel that nests inside the base of the espresso maker. |
Next, fill base with water to the level of the safety valve. Replace the funnel into the base and fill it with ground coffee; do not press coffee down. For best results, use fresh roasted, finely ground coffee. The recommendation is to use a 6-to-1 water to coffee ratio. For each tablespoon of coffee, use 3 oz. of water. |
Tighten the top to the base. Make sure the top is completely screwed on to the base before putting on the stovetop. |
Heat coffee until coffee percolates to the top. Make sure the handle of the espresso maker is not over the heat source. Remove from heat and serve. Enjoy! |
Available in a Variety of Sizes
Make All of Your Favorite Coffee Beverages with the Primula Aluminum Espresso Maker
The novice coffee drinkers to the most serious coffee lovers will love this easy to use espresso maker- perfect for making all kinds of coffee drinks. Of course, you can visit your neighborhood coffee shop to enjoy some coffee, but making it at home is so easy and inexpensive, why not do it yourself?
Using a moka pot/espresso maker is nothing more than filling the base with water, filling the filter with coffee and then percolating your coffee until it is ready to serve. From there, you can drink it straight as a shot or you can make affogatos, americanos, frappes and much more all with this espresso maker.

Then I read about the Moka pot, where the pressured steam passes through the coffee grounds and maked the decoction/espresso. Curious, and not wanting to spend a whole lot of money, I bought this.
I made my first batch of decoction with Udhayam Indian coffee/chicory blend and was blown away! It took just 3 minutes and I had strong decoction to make four 8 oz cups of strong "filter coffee" with whole milk!
My American family loves my filter coffee. I make 20 cups for thanksgiving and I used this moka pot to make all the decoction/espresso.
Caution/Warning: I did multiple batches of espresso back to back and at some point the plastic handle melted and stuck to my finger when I picked it up. To be fair to the seller, they do warn us to not keep the handle close to the fire.
My tips to a good espresso: Fill the bottom with lukewarm water below the safety valve. Fill the coffee grounds in the container and slightly tamp it down. Screw the top on. Heat at medium or below and let the espresso come out at the top. Lower the heat and let the process finish. Immediately transfer the espresso to a different container to prevent scorching.
I have used Indian filter coffee brands (Kothas, Udhayam) and Costco dark roast with great success.
Hope you find this review useful.
The 1-cup size yields around 30 to 35 ml of coffee, which is just right for a quick pick-me-up.

When the Primula arrived I thought, "Yup, okay, I got what I paid for." The imperfection in the metal, which is now a little stained from use in the photo, and the feel of the material concurred with its low price. But it had good weight, solid hinge, and sturdy handle, albeit small.
At first, I was disappointed in the coffee. It perculated, but the coffee was like watery espresso, somewhere between an Americano and an espresso. I experimented with beans, grinds, and water amounts. I even went to Starbucks, paid for an espresso, but walked out with the grounds to try in my moka pot. The coffee was not smooth and full.
Then, I don't know how it happened. I hit upon my recipe. 2 flat tablespoons of store brand espresso coffee. (Can't figure that out!) Fill water just below the pressure valve. Perk on 8 (do not overheat) and remove from burner immediately or the coffee will cook (some people love that taste).
I have been told that freshly roasted, freshly ground beans will produce a crema with this method, but I haven't succeeded.
Tips.
1. People say the handles melt. Never put a Moka Pot in the centre of your burner.
2. Make sure your fingers are in the handle properly. The hinge is hot.
3. Put water in the bottom, insert the filter and add the grounds, then - leaving the base on the counter - screw on the top section. No threading errors, no leaks.
4. After pouring, run under cool water, and you can flip and compost the grounds while they are damp.
5. Rinse the top two pieces right away. Ready for more!
6. Put the spout way over your cup. It dribbles.
5 things I love.
The Primula is inexpensive! It is inexpensive to operate. No pods, filters... Just grounds. Moka pots are helpful for the environment... No wasteful pods. Primula perks a steamy espresso-like coffee. Primula is solid and easy to use, easy to clean.
If I upgrade to a more expensive one, here's why. The threads are not silky smooth when turning. The spout drips.
The smallish handle doesn't fit a hand easily. But so far, those aren't reasons to spend $40 on a brand name Moka Pot.
