Update, 1 month later: The brown plug turned black, as seen from outside. Air is holding perfectly. The plug is still visible on tire, so, if needed, I can redo the plug but it appears unnecessary to do so. I put remaining 29 plugs in Ziploc bag for future use. This kit was definitely worth the money, for peace of mind, ease of repair, and quality that will last a long time.
Update, 6 months later. The original plug is still fine. Another tire on a different car lost pressure and this was due to a wood screw between threads. Took out tire and got it patched and it worked fine, everything finished in one hour. Great product.
Update, 1.5 years later. All plugged tires are holding air as well as new ones. Since then, two more flat, one from staple on tread and another a pinhole on sidewall. I read warnings about sidewall but tried it anyway and it worked! It was actually easier to plug it there, less force required, and soapy water and driving on highway confirmed good seal. I was going to try mushroom type of plug, but online search convinced me silicon plug and fixed round shape is not likely to do as well as this string/rope type of plug, which can mold to the shape of puncture and is self vulcanizing. This product has saved me nearly $1k in less than 2 years and I expect it will continue to serve me well.
Update, 2 years later. Just replaced a tire, after running it for 110k miles and 8.5 years, and after plugging in FIVE sidewall pinholes and rips. The tire was a Goodyear tire and probably was rated for 50k, so it was time to replace it. It was nice surprise that all FIVE sidewall plugs, done by Safety Seal strings, held without leaking. This saved me thousands of dollars and dozens of hours visiting tire/auto shops. All of my other plugs have been on treads, not sidewall, so I think this tire probably had mfg defect/weakness. The plugs on treads are holding perfactly, TPM's not triggering and I do not have noticeable leaks, compared to tires without plugs. Safety seal kit is serving well and I expect it will continue to.
After (yet again) finding my rubber cement for a cheaper kit had leaked and dried all over the inside of my last cheaply made tire plug kit, I went in search of a new kit which didn't need rubber cement, but I also wanted some high quality tools this time around.
I read the Safety Seal kit had self-vulcanizing rubber plugs, which meant I would not need rubber cement going forward. This was a huge plus, as that consumable never seemed to last when exposed to the summer heat in my trunk.
As I researched the reviews here, I saw reviews from a handful of others who ordered this kit and complained of their tools breaking easily - this did not bode well for my inclination to buy this kit. But then I found one newer review, mentioning the tools that person received were better - heavy-duty and likely machined from solid metal. This raised my interest a lot, so I poked around online and found newer images on the manufacturer's website, depicting what appeared to be better-made tools when compared with the few images of broken tools in the reviews here. I took the plunge, and placed my order.
Let me start by admitting I had never really spent more than $20 on a plug kit before this one, and I have bought at least nine different tire plug kits in the past three decades. The two issues which always plagued me, were dried out rubber cement, and cheaply made tools...but those plug kits had been effective in getting me back on the road in a self-sufficient manner (when paired with an air compressor), which is why I always chose to carry a tire repair kit with me.
When I opened this ~$50 kit, I was immediately drawn to the quality of the tools. Having previously only used kits with cheap-feeling plastic handles and metal components of dubious quality, these tools are substantial. I mean it when I say, they have a heft which implies durability. These things appear to be SOLID metal now, and are very well machined. I wholeheartedly feel these tools will far outlast my usefulness on Earth...
The reamer tool isn't as "raspy" as the reamers were in my past kits. The reamer instead is intended to widen a narrow puncture hole enough to accept a tire plug. It is not intended to roughen up the rubber around the hole enough for rubber cement (which mind you, isn't needed with this kit) to have something to adhere to. As a bonus, I'm pretty sure it could double as a self-defense tool, or even as a small hammer - if needed.
And, the seal insertion tool handle is made just as well as the reamer - these things just feel substantial!
Dare I say it, but receiving this kit has changed my view of getting a flat tire from, "at least I'll be ready when it happens," to one of, "now I'm almost looking forward to having to use this kit..."
Pair this awesome tire plug kit with a decent portable tire inflator of your choosing, and you'll be ready to patch up to 30 tires on the side of the road before you need to resupply.
Whether you travel a lot or not, if you believe in being self-sufficient and absolutely despise being stranded on the side of the road due to something as easily remedied as a flat tire at 1am, I would DEFINITELY have to recommend this tire plug kit.
If you find you have read this entire review, do yourself a huge favor - stop researching, and be confident in knowing this is the kit you want to buy.
