There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
- An OEM brand adjustable oil wrench from Autozone: Worthless! The metal prongs kept slipping off the plastic filter cap and there was no spring mechanism to keep the wrench "fitted." Even if this did fit, it would require two hands to operate which was difficult under the limited space that my Rhino ramps offer.
- Fram Jaw-Type oil filter wrench from Walmart: Space around the 2010 Toyota Prius oil filter is VERY limited. This tool might have worked if there was enough room to fit it around the entire cap. Unfortunately there is not.
- Penzoil 65mm/14flute oil filter wrench from O'Reilly: While this fit better than all the others, it is made of cheap plastic and would not hold onto the cap under the torque required to remove it -- it kept slipping off. Thanks dealership for putting the cap on with an impact wrench!
ARGH!!! After wasting countless hours trying to find the right part, I finally caved and bought this specialty piece. Fits and works like a charm. I wish I had bought it right from the start but was stubborn since the cost is pretty high for a tool that would not be a multi-tasker. That's okay. This is a solid piece and will hold up for many oil changes to come.
As mentioned in other reviews, filter covers are often over-tightened, so it's important the filter socket fits properly and that the hex drive section is strong. No problems with the Assenmacher in this regard. It takes a 24mm or 15/16" socket and has never had an issue removing filter covers on the cars I've worked on.
There has been some talk of some having a hole in the top to make removal of the filter cover easier. Generally I find this is an issue with tin socket wrenches but not this one. That said, I usually lightly grease or use a little oil on the wrench mating surfaces so this probably helps.
Overall, a highly recommended tool.
My only reservation on this filter socket was the price. For a fraction of the price of this one, you can simply buy a plain 64mm 14 flats filter which works just fine. Although it didn't bother me, some have complained that to used this socket, you must ALSO attach a 24mm or 15/16" socket that fits on the back side of the socket, vs. other sockets that simply have an opening in the socket to attack it to the wrench itself.

With this tool, a 15/16" wrench and some elbow grease (to break it loose from being over-torqued at the dealer), I was able to successfully change my oil filter.
I would definitely recommend you purchase one of these to do your own changes on your Toyota. If you manage to change your oil without one, you have my kudos.
A couple of minor things:
Due to the snug fit on the filter cap, it can tend to want to stay attached to it. It was easy enough to coax it off by wiggling it back and forth. I don't think there is anything that can be done to prevent this, as the snug fit is needed to prevent slippage due to the large number of facets.
The 15/16" nut is a little excessive in my opinion. Not sure why such a large size was chosen. Note that the hex nut has no square hole for a socket wrench, like some pictures may show. You will need a 15/16" wrench or socket. The unit is one solid piece though, which is nice, so you don't have to worry about the nut portion breaking off.
