After placing a 1 ounce bottle of the tracer dye in the oil and driving around the neighborhood for a bit, I took a look with the detection light while wearing the yellow-colored glasses. Initially, the areas fluorescing were difficult to see. After turning out the lights in my shop, however, it was much easier to see and I was able to pinpoint the source of the leak.
Since its initial purchase, I've been able to use this product often to help diagnose oil leaks for a number of other vehicles belonging to friends and family. For better or worse, my home shop has become the go-to place for friends and family looking to diagnose an oil leak before taking it to the shop for this purpose. Of course, the real money-saver for the DIYer is if you're willing to make the repair as well as part of the process.
My only complaint (not related to the product) is the need to have the vehicle in the dark in order to adequately see there areas where the tracer fluid is fluorescing. There are probably stronger lights out there that would preclude this need, but for the price of the tracer fluid and the UV light, it's a small thing to have to turn off the shop lights for a bit in order to see the leak clearly.
Some suggestions of using the product:
1. Clean the area you want to inspect first.
2. Do a benchmark or baseline visual of what the area looks like with UV light BEFORE putting the dye into the system. You never know what will glow.
3. Follow the instructions of running engine for 10 minutes but not much more. If you run it too long and have a big leak, it will just be dyed oil everywhere and the leak source will be hard to detect.
In the end it did help me detect my leak. This is a 6 pack and I only needed half a bottle, so this will last a long time.
This model of car has a known weakness with the fuel vapor recovery canister. Several forums and online experts said that this was the obvious place to concentrate my search. I'm glad that I tried the UV dye and found that the problem was in a $30 part that 'Never' fails rather than starting out by replacing a $250 charcoal canister and finding no improvement in the situation!
