WHO WE ARE: LUND

It all began in 1965 when Allan W. Lund, an entrepreneur highly skilled in the design of fiberglass products, decided to start his own company. Before founding LUND and producing accessories for the truck market, Allan was a teacher and insurance salesman. In 1974, he began making sun visors– functioning much like a baseball cap, except for trucks. By the late 1970s, the light truck market was growing, and LUND added accessories for light trucks to their product selection.

In 1997, LUND acquired Deflecta-Shield. This merger created Lund International, a premier manufacturer and marketer of a portfolio of products that includes running boards, hood shields, side window deflectors, visors, tonneau covers, toolboxes, and truck bed protection. Later that same year, LUND also acquired Belmor, a manufacturer of specialty accessories for the heavy-duty trucking industry.

Lund's Genesis Tailgate Seal is constructed of high quality EPDM rubber with 3M adhesive tape for easy installation. This extruded rubber seal prevents dust and moisture from entering truck bed through the tailgate area. The universal fit seal comes in a "cut to fit" 10 foot length.

    I bought this mainly to keep freezing weather, slight rain, and that damn desert dust out of my trucks camper shell. I wasn't expecting much for the price, but I was happy to be disappointed with a fantastic product. It looks like they use the 3M automotive tape on this stuff, I placed it around my tailgate and above it around the edge under the lip and it works great. I HIGHLY recommend you take off your tailgate when installing this. I was in a hurry and did not, it still works great but this stuff is super sticky and has a slight bit of a dip due to my stupidity in mounting, still seals great though. I do a lot of contract work and occasionally there isn't a place to spend the night. With this it helps for any nights when even the slightest breeze will freeze your bones. I installed it on a S10 and had about two feet or more left over.

    I own a 2000 F150. My kids have a band, and needed a weatherproof way to transport equipment. After installing a cap, I realized that the tailgate did not really seal up all that well. I found this item from Lund on Amazon at a great price, so I bought 2 of them.

    The material is a soft "open foam" (meaning squishy) design that despite the softness, appears durable. A cross section of this looks like a big lower case "d". The overall height is is about 1 3/16" (29mm) and the round part of the d is about 11/16" (17mm). The center of the "d" is hollow, which allows the seal to collapse and conform to a non-uniform surface.

    The adhesive appears to be 3M's "double strength" all weather tape, and is 1/2" (12.7mm) wide. If you are not familiar with this, the tape is actually a thin strip of closed cell foam with adhesive on both sides. It is often used for vent-visors and trim adhesive. I bought a couple of rolls recently at my local Lowes. It's relatively inexpensive, but really grips...just don't put it on in cold weather. Suggested install is 50 deg F and above.

    Installation...this mounts to the sheet metal "lip" on the bed of the truck, not the tailgate itself. On my truck this is is not a flat surface, but has some minor bends in it, for whatever reason. The gasket material is soft enough, and the adhesive strip also, that it just conformed to the grooves. Overall, it was quick and easy.

    If there are any concerns I would note, that would be that the lower gasket is exposed to any kind of loose material such as dirt or mulch, if you carry that in the bed from time to time. You may wish to use a tarp or something to protect it.

    I ended up using only one roll, with about 18" extra left over. However, I can see this being useful in other applications, possibly for some marine type of use, so I will hold onto that extra one I purchased.

    I have a 2010 Toyota Tundra with a Leer Topper. I have to travel quite a few miles on dirt roads to get to my mountain property, and before, the bed and sidewalls of the "box" of my truck would be covered in a very fine dust. I purchased this product after reading the reviews, and it worked exactly as advertised. Installation couldn't be simpler - I rolled it out and cut the pieces to size. The design gives it sufficient width to close off the gaps between the tail gate and the topper, and it compresses quite well filling the gaps. The adhesive has so far worked flawlessly, even in one spot that rubs agains a metal protrusion at the bottom of the tail gate (this compresses when I close the door and springs back out to close the gap). It took me once or twice to realize that I had to close the tailgate a bit harder to get to its fully closed position, but the results have been great - my bed is effectively sealed off and I don't have to wash it out every time.

    Two hints - make sure you cut just a bit short, as the gasket material will stretch as you press it down. I found that about an 3/4" to an inch for the width of the bed, and of course, less for a shorter length. Also, take your time installing - the adhesive quickly becomes adhered and difficult to move. I would pull the backing off for about 9" to a foot at a time and slowly install, and this seemed to work well.

    The price of this item can't be beat, and so far, I would definitely recommend it. I've had it on for a couple of months now, and it hasn't compressed or worn at all.

    I am not done trying, but it seems like this seal is a bit difficult to keep in-place. I believe the issue is that I live in the Northwest US and immediately after installation the seal had to deal with moisture (which blows up through the tailgate while driving down the highway). As a result the adhesive failed. I'm looking at trying again (I'm just sealing the bottom, so I have enough to try once more) when summer comes, or perhaps use some serious adhesive. Anyhow, might work better in a warm/dry climate. Seems like it would do the job if it would stay in place.

    I realized after buying that my tonneau leaks a little, allowing a little water into the bed, and while it's not enough to worry about, installing a tailgate seal would effectively trap that water in the bed. I also haul firewood and bark mulch in my truck, and the bottom part of the seal would get full of bark and dirt and so on. I cut two short pieces and installed them on the sides, effectively blocking rain and salt spray from getting in that way, but left the bottom open as it only makes sense in my use case. It's a great product - soft, flexible, easy to install, sticks well - I just didn't stop to consider the details. If your tonneau / cap is bone dry, and you don't haul dirt / bark / firewood, this would be a great choice for you.
