I have had this "new to me Caddy" for probably 6 months now. I have been complaining about the ride for all that time. This smaller STS I thought would give as good a ride as my Deville. Not so. It rode like 4 cinder-blocks on these new tires. All are new Michelins that are about the only tires that will fit the car. The fronts are different than the rears - size-wise. Everyone told me they are great tires (they ought to be at $225/each).
Anyway, after much ado and searching Amazon.com for a new digital tire gauge, I checked the pressures with the new external gauge and the dashboard readout - both matched. Well, heck! Now what!?!? Then, it occurred to me to check the car door pillar to see what the recommended tire pressure is for my car. Easy - 30 pounds all the way around.
What have my tires been set at for the past 13,000 miles? 37 pounds! I went out this afternoon when the tires were cold and adjusted them down to 30.5 pounds, just because I did not want to go too low and then I'd need to haul out the compressor and all that crap.
Test drive: Unbelievable! What a difference. My teeth remain in my head. My hearing aids don't pop out of my ears. It was night-and-day difference with only 7 pounds difference in the tires. Now, the Caddy finally rides like a Caddy.
13,000 miles I have been dealing with this. Word to the wise - check your tire pressure. Saves on gas, too, I am told.
I had no problems with leaks or the gauge sealing. It is fast, accurate, consistent. Great value. Very easy to read with the backlit display.
- Fits comfortably in your hand, unlike many others that feel awkward when trying to use them
- Clear large back-lit display, easy visible under the sun or at night. The ones with red LED displays are almost impossible to read under the sun. The ones with LCDs cannot be seen at night, if not back lit.
- It has presettable target pressures for front and rear tires; they are only intended as a reminder of the wanted pressures.
- It has a LED light to help you find the tire valve at night.
- It has PSI or BAR readings.
Contrary to what consumer reports, using it is very simple.
- Pressing the SET button turns the gauge on. You can then measure the tire pressure as with a regular tire gauge. Press it firmly against the tire valve, making sure you have a tight seal. The gauge will beep once a steady reading has been obtained. Remove the meter from the tire valve. The reading will show for a few seconds, and then go back to zero, and be ready to take another measurement.
If you have set goal pressures:
- Pressing the SET button turns the gauge on
- Pressing the arrow UP or DOWN buttons shows the front or rear goal pressures
- Measure tire pressure as with a regular tire gauge.
Set Up:
- With the meter ON, holding the SET button for 3 seconds puts the gauge in the set up mode, starting in the unit selection screen. You can change the units pressing the up or down arrow buttons.
- If you press the SET button again, it will change to the goal pressure screen. You can select between front and rear pressure goals using the up or down arrow buttons. Pressing the SET button again enters the selected goal pressure adjustment screen. You adjust the wanted goal pressure using the UP or DOWN arrow buttons.
- Pressing the SET button again will toggle to the other axle goal pressure.
- Pressing the SET button again will toggle to the screen showing both front and rear goal pressures and then revert the meter to the measuring screen.
The meter uses two CR2032 batteries, accessible by removing the one Phillips screw in the rubber coated battery cover.
For comfort, it comes with a rubberized grip.
A one-LED placed under the pressure-reading tip can be used as a flashlight if needed.
The 5-year warranty statement promises to replace the unit if defective for as long as the owner pays for shipping both ways. Since this is likely to cost more than the price of purchase, the warranty promise is meaningless in practice.
Specs:
- Range: 5-99 PSI (BAR units supported)
- Resolution: 0.5 PSI
- Power: 2 replaceable CR2032 Lithium batteries
- Manufacturer: Made in China
I found the gauge easy to use and the measurements appear to be accurate. I had no difficulty taking readings. Taking a reading can be as easy as pushing the nozzle against the tire's valve and waiting for the beep, then disengaging the gauge and reading the display. Yes, a little air does escape but my unit was always able to make a good seal in a fraction of a second. For those who don't wish to remember the recommended pressure, the gauge can be programmed to store settings for the rear and front tires or, you could store settings for 2 cars if the recommended pressure happens to be the same for both front and rear. I can't think of a practical use for the 'flashlight' feature - it stays on only while the power button is pressed - but there may come a day I will be grateful it was there.
I find this gage to perform well and, so far, I was able to operate it without any trouble. I understand that it's possible to perform the exact same readings with a near-free 'analog' gauge but I believe that the added precision and convenience are worth this item's price. However, I will take out one star and rate this gauge as a 4-star mainly for the somewhat misleading '5-year warranty' claim, prominently displayed on the packaging. Given that 'in real life' the customer would pay more for shipping back and forth than it would cost to purchase a brand-new unit the warranty promise, whether 5-year or double-lifetime as quite meaningless.
