Kness Tip-Trap 109-0-001 Live-Capture Mouse Trap
Amazon.com
While mouse infestations can be overwhelming, conventional "snap traps" often prove equally overwhelming to use. This tip trap has an ingeniously simple design that provides a safe, humane, and effective way to rid your house of mice. Simply remove the end cap and place peanut butter in the bait cup. Place the trap in a problem area and wait. As the mouse moves inside the trap to fetch the bait, the trap will tip up automatically, closing the trap door. Then you can release the mouse a safe distance from your house, allowing it to go on with its life and you to go on with yours.
From the Manufacturer
Safe to use around children and pets. Reusable and easy to clean.

I know there are some mediochre (or lower) reviews regarding this product, but please understand that there can be mitigating factors that determine how well this product works (which I learned the hard way). This product, in fact, works extremely well!! I have a large house surrounded by woods. Combine that with the intense high temps outside and that can lead to a family of mice dweeling in my house. So hence the tip-trap. Within two weeks we caught 15 mice!! It works as promised!!
But here are some things you need to know to make them work as promised:
1) The suggested bait is peanut butter. No need to change from this. However, our first instinct is to load up the bait cap in our excitement to nab the pesky mice! DON'T DO THIS. The tip trap is precisely balanced. A large dose of peanut butter adds too much weight to the trap side and could make the trap tip just from the vibrations of your walking, or even if the mouse is sniffing around it and nudges it. Only put a small glob the size of a Skittle or MM candy. It is VERY aromatic and mice have a very good sense of smell. That will be plenty of peanut butter to do the trick.
2) Mice are skittish and like to hug close to walls when they are out exploring, so keep the trap next to the wall (in their path), with just a hair of separation. You wouldn't want the trap to tip when the mouse was inside, but then get hung on the wall and the mouse escapes.
3) Keep the trap closest to the likely source of their entrance or starting point, probably where you see the mouse droppings. These traps will be most productive overnight when the house is quiet and the mice feel safe to come out.
These things do work great! Just so you know, once you catch your mouse it will panic and leave lots of little mouse gifts for you inside of the trap. Rinse them out as soon as you free the mouse so they dont dry and stick inside. No need to get the trap spotless because the scent of the mouse you just let go will encourage other mice because they think it is a safe place to walk. I admit I have not tried any other live-traps than this one, as this was the first that I found when Googled and it works quite well. So while I can give you a very experienced testament to this product's success, I cannot compare to any other. But this one serves very well, so that's all I need anyway!! Enjoy!
At first, I was skeptical. It seemed almost too simple and perhaps easy for a mouse to get out of. I also wished that the material was clear so we could see if there was a mouse inside just from comparisons with another product we were trying.
However, all our concerns were baseless, as the Tip-Trap worked great. You can't beat a 100% success rate. Every night we put it out, every morning we had a mouse. The way that we could tell was by the weight. This is a very light product and easy to feel the difference when a mouse was inside-even with a baby mouse, which we got.
We got big mice and little mice in this trap. It was easy, although be sure to read the instructions. You can set it incorrectly.
We spent over $11.00 on another mouse trap and I wish I had just bought a few more Tip-Traps. This is a very economical and humane way of dealing with mice.
Fully recommended!
Knowing that they must be removed from chicken coops and feed storage areas, it's nice to have options that do not require poison, nor snap a mouse/vole/rat to death and leave it for animals to pick at and possibly get sick from.
Your cat, dog and other pets may get access to dead animals in traditional traps, so these enclosed live catch traps seemed like a great idea.
I purchased four and placed them on a shelf where mouse droppings were noted. I also places a motion activated camera so I could better see how they were or were not being trapped by the device.
Within one 24 hour period, three out of four traps placed were tripped with nothing at all inside. Upon video and still image review, a Deer Mouse had trotted over the top of the three traps that were tripped and of course activated them without being inside.
The third trap remained unsprung, but the Deer Mouse only sniffed the opening and failed to enter.
With all four traps re-set for another go, the Deer Mouse now just scampers around each trap and doesn't bother with them at all.
I have added a photo of the setup and mouse to the collection of photos submitted by buyers/reviewers.
I like the idea of the tilt trap and in theory it's great, in practical use it's simply not effective. There are many solutions to this problem:
The most popular is to simply put a cardboard box over the tilted UP end, through a hole that is cut just slightly taller than the trap at the fulcrum. This allows the trap to activate, but does not allow the mouse to stand ON the tipped up section. As this is an innovation which isn't already a part of the trap, I am giving my two star rating on the traps as designed.
It also wouldn't hurt to make them larger with an adjustable balance weight... the buyer can of course make any number of modifications and the system is already being copied and improved by other companies... I guess this is an example of another weak patent registration process.
So, I sadly would not recommend these to friends and others wanting to rid themselves of mice quickly.... but IF you enjoy the process of problem solving and using these as a starting point, you will certainly foil the mice and end up collecting them in short order.
Look for the design which has a housing over the tipped up portion... it's better.
