A Big Step Up From Other Hose Reels

6 years ago I bought a good quality Ames hose reel. It functioned well during its life, but it is constructed almost entirely of plastic and in my climate with lots of sun and heat, the plastic gradually becomes brittle and weak. You can see in the photo of the Ames reel, the plastic brackets where the reel attached to the wall eventually snapped suddenly under just the weight of the reel and hose. Clearly, a plastic hose reel was not suitable for my climate and exposure.

Other reviewers have already noted the quality of the Eley hose reel. It is all metal, except for the winding handle and some components of the friction cam lever brake assembly. The design is top notch, the fittings and connectors are of the best quality, the assembly instructions are clear and easy to follow, and the finished assembly worked the first time without any leaks. Mounting screws/bolts are provided for both wood frames and masonry walls. Time will tell if any leaks eventually develop at the swiveling water connections, but I think the higher price is fully justified by the high quality of the product.

I'd researched hose reels for a loooong time. Even bought more than a few, only to be greatly disappointed. The metal ones I bought rusted out within a few years. The plastic ones ... well, it was hard to get one that could last more than two years in our Florida sun. So when I saw the Rapid Reel I was a bit skeptical.

Most of the other reviews I'd found were overwhelmingly positive, so I took a chance. In redesigning a workshed working deck, I planned for a hose ... holder of some type ... to be mounted on a couple of well-anchored 4x4s. All I needed was the right holder...

First, when the Rapid Reel arrived it was superbly packaged within plastic to protect all parts. All screw assemblies were put together so you knew you had all the right pieces; yes, this meant a bit of disassembly when mounting, but you had all the parts and knew how they went together. Nearly idiot proof. The instructions were very clear, in ENGLISH; no confusion. And there are something like eight mounting options, so all you have to do is figure out which option you wanted, and follow the clear instructions.

I needed a reel that was parallel with the mounting surface so that I could unwind 150' of hose out into the yard and reel it in easily. I mounted it nearly waist-high (a bit higher than most might mount theirs) for easy handling; it doesn't hide as well, maybe, but I'm a form-follows-function kinda guy anyway, so this is perfect for me. I passed up using the included lag screws in favor of longer lag bolts to give even more solid anchoring on the 4x4 supports, and I'd recommend doing that if your mounting situation allows; there can be a LOT of stress on mounting surface and hardware when rolling and holding large lengths of large hose, and overkill just gives you a bit more piece of mind.

Now here is where the Rapid Reel really shines: unrolling 150' of ¾" hose, effortless. Really. Because of some severe nerve damage from a few accidents I have greatly reduced upper body strength. Where I used to struggle to get the hose out to the end of my yard, now it is about as effortless as one could imagine. And winding it in ... wow. I used to dread the struggle I'd have to go through to manhandle my hose, especially if it decided to kink. As a young buck I never gave it two thoughts; now, well, different story. Enter the Rapid Reel, and a simple winding brings the hose up nice and tight, whether you drain the water out of the hose or not. Perfect.

Someone in one of the other reviews had suggested using a cloth in your left hand to clean/guide the hose onto the reel as you wind with the right, and I found that to be an effective solution to both cleaning the hose exterior and a neat wind-job.

The hose brake is another well thought out bit; it keeps the hose from further unraveling when you've pulled all you want, and keeps the hose from unraveling when small curious hands try to mess with it; Not quite kid-proof, but close.

I've had no issues with leakage whatsoever. Or any other issues, for that matter. I would suggest that if you are going to invest in a reel of this caliber, do yourself a favor and also invest in a NEW professional-grade hose as well. Use that three-year old plastic hose somewhere else, or just trash it. This reel deserves a really good hose to use to best advantage.

Now I'm trying to justify using more of these reels elsewhere, I like mine that much. Not that I need a reel anywhere else, it's just that this actually works, and makes it a pleasure to reel in and out.

Buy it; I really doubt you'll regret your decision.

Three year update:

Works as new, after three years of New England seasonal use. No weather corrosion. I did experience a leak this past Spring, at the brass colored elbow fitting in the center of the spool assembly. I checked the manufacturer’s website. There is an entry on their site that explains the reel can be affected by freezing weather ice, if the assembly is not drained and prepared properly for cold weather. I thought long and hard about it and decided the manufacture is correct: I did not properly drain the assembly before cold weather. Not their fault. So, I purchased the replacement part; I did not file a warranty claim as I don’t believe the part was defective.

The cost of the replacement part was modest and it arrived promptly. Not difficult to install the new part either. I remain 100% satisfied with this purchase - I bought another new reel this year, for a different location :)

It is mirror glass smooth when spooling. A racheting setting can retard the speed while withdrawing the hose, if you don’t want the hose to scurry onto the ground.

The cost of the hose reel is high, making this an investment into quality. I am very satisfied with this purchase. I’m impressed that there is a ten-year warranty associated with this product. Given the quality engineering and beefy nature of the parts involved, I can see why Eley can confidently offer such a long warranty. You won’t need it. Compare that to the big box hose reels and their reviews.

This is one solid, well made unit. It's so rare these days to get something that is made out of solid metal and not cheap plastic.
I was impressed with the instruction sheet, and the quality of the screws and other parts. Once it was mounted, it performed better that I expected. The reeling in of the hose is a breeze, and the brake is a nice feature.

it is more expensive that other hose reels out there, but this is quality, and I expect it to last pretty much forever.

At first glance, the price of the Eley Rapid Reel Wall Mount Garden Hose Reel will most likely raise an eye brow . But after going through 3 plastic hose reels (brand names will not be mentioned)...I noticed immediately the difference between the plastic units and Eley unit. The Eley unit is an all metal construction, with thought given to design and function. It was a breeze to mount to the wall (option of mounting to wood or concrete (both types of screens were supplied). I literally assembled the unit and mounted it to a concrete wall in under 30 minutes. This is a hose reel designed to last!
