I will never accept anything BMW in my yota. It's like oil and water imo. It's not a Supra if it's a Z4... If it's a Z4 it's NOT A SUPRA!!!! If it's not a Supra I'm not interested in it at all.

Turbo inline 6, rear wheel drive, big coupe. Close enough for me but I'd be replacing my BMW with one of these if they're good enough.

I wouldn't kick it out of my bed. BMW inline 6 engines are awesome. I had a 3 series once. The engine was fantastic. The electrical was less than fantastic. I'd take a BMW inline 6 with BMW suspension tuning and Toyota electrical and reliability any day.

I think it's a bit of a shame. Toyota is capable of building motors, I'm curious if whoever made the Subaru/Toyota coupe happen is behind this.

This. Guess it depends on who was behind the engineering of what throughout the entire vehicle.
Not the most ideal, but I’d take the BMW Turbo 6 as long as everything else was Toyota.
Now if the Supra was a Z4 chassis and all Z4 components, just a different body - Fuck no.

I've always like the Supra's. I still like the body style from the late 80's-early 90's. I also love BMW's inline 6 engine and how their cars handle. They're insanely fun to drive. I'm pretty excited about this partnership TBH.

    From the article:

In addition to the Supra, this platform will underpin the upcoming BMW Z4, which was first shown in concept form last year.

They won't be twins, though. For starters, the BMW will only come as a roadster, while the Supra is a coupe. And while they'll share some major components, the development work for each was carried out separately. We get the sense that the Supra will be the more focused sports car of the two.

Not the first time, nor the last time auto manufacturers join forces to design parts.

Like others have said, not thrilled about it though.

I'm pretty sure the block is sourced from BMW and the engine is built by someone else. It'll probably be pretty easy to modify for better performance as well.

As long as Toyota engineers fix anything that’s attached to the block, I would be pleased. Leaving it to BMW will get you N54 HPFP issues.
Which is why I’ve never went to a 335I/535I.

the chief engineer even said to get the 4 cylinder for the 2jz turbo swap, I'm sure it's gonna be a pretty popular swap.

I had the 335xi in my garage for a few years, only things replaced was a vanos solenoid around 50k that I replaced in about 20min and something with the transaxle around 130k-140k. Other than that, it was a good chick car. @Boosted4runner

Although the new edition a nice piece of art which I deeply appreciate from a tuning standpoint, give me JDM MKIV any day with a 100k gift card from UPgarage and half off shipping back into the states.

If Toyota goes with the B58 inline turbo 6, same engine that’s in the new X3 M40i, it will be very quick. How do I know? I own a 2018 X3 M40i, and it is crazy fast with sports car handling.

No doubts about performance, but the Supra is the crown jewel of the Toyota lineup and has had a lot of Toyota fans waiting to see it return. Now that it's so close and learning it's no more a Toyota than a rebadged BRZ is, that's a bummer.

I get that this cuts production costs by splitting between the two companies, and lots of high performance cars use BMW motors. Just didn't expect the Supra to turn into a collaboration.

I agree that the MKV Supra seems like a let down so far. However, in the MKIV there was some great German engineering that contributed to it’s greatness. In particular the GETRAG 6spd that could handle over 1K hp and 800lbs of tq.

For me, I’m kinda glad it might be a flop. Keeps the value of mine up.
