Im looking for a 2016 tundra 5.7 liter v8 4WD without ffv, but getting conflicting information as to whether or not it's available. Some Toyota sites indicate that ffv is the only option.

Any issues for those of you that have the v8 ffv that run regular unleaded gas?

    Thx in advance.

Toyota must make non flex fuel versions. Toyota advertises that "certain trim levels for 2016 Tundras" come with FFV engine. This tells me that some dealers must have non FFV Tundras. The biggest difference between FFV and non FFV is that FFV engines have a special internal coating to resist formic acid which can be corrosive. Formic acid is a by product formed when water mixes with ethanol. I don't think it's much of an issue anymore. Although I prefer non FFV. Call a few dealers to check on availability for non FFV versions. I think it may be a regional thing. (Purely guessing on that.)

I purchased a 2016 4x4 Platinum about 3 weeks ago that is the 5.7 FFV. I haven't had any issues with it but I'm only on my second fill up (707 miles). From what I heard the South East division only carries FFV 5.7 engines any more. Some other regions might carry the non-FFV engines.

No issues as of yet with my 2016 FFV CM 4x4. I've only got 3k miles logged as of this morning:) been averaging 16.3-16.8 on every gas up. That's pencil and paper math not the computer average of 17.2
I haven't any intentions of putting anything in other than unleaded.

There are some states that Toyota only sells the truck with the FFV engine....Texas being one of them. I had considered going out of state to buy a non FFV but decided not to....Haven't had any issues with mine yet but it only has about 2200 mile so far.

I think they must have the programming down now. My 13 had some issues at first, but the latest flash fixed them. I would assume the newer trucks have this fix built in, but not certain.

Have 13K on my FFV, no issues although I run 100% gasoline. I only put the 10% ethanol stuff in it whenever there is no choice. I'm lucky to have a gas station right next to my work that sells 100% gasoline.

I think it's safe to say that FFV engines are good to go. I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Not a big deal at all. If you can get a non FFV go for it.

Everytime I see e85 at the pump, I'm so tempted to fill up and see if there's any difference... then I slap myself and let go of the tree I started to hug

Probably too expensive to truck/pipe E85 to the east coast. The further away from the corn belt the more likely to get a non FFV. (Once again, pure speculation on my part)

There is a difference. Burn rates, etc. 100 to 105 (as high as 110) octane compared to dino.

One advantage of ffv is that you have more fuel choices in a Zombie apocalypse, haha. It seems that a few ffv had problem at the beginning. I haven't heard of any more problem for a while now.

2014 FFV here, just about to my 25k service with no issues.
In the past the non-FFV was appealing since you could get the TRD supercharger only on the non-FFV, but with the discontinuation of the TRD charger and Magnuson taking over supercharger duties along with a FFV tune theres really no reason to me that the non FFV would be sought after. They both seem to run the same

This. The FFV also has a larger fuel pump to handle the thirst when running E85. But it gives you the added pep of 110 octane.

14 FFV ( almost 2 years old) no problems at all. Dont think you really need to worry unless your trying to put a SC on it. Even then FFV can be supercharged without issues.

I believe I read on one of the forums that you can still order a non FFV truck. Some regions deliver only FFV versions, but non FFV can be ordered. Talk to your local dealer.

Thanks for all the replies. I talked with director of sales and he conceded that if it sits for a while or on really cold mornings upon starting the engine will sound rough for about 10 seconds. I don't want that at all given that I'm dropping $40,000. Now I'm wondering if it only gets worse. I plan on keeping this truck for 10+ yrs like my Tacoma....thanks again!

I doubt these FFV engines would be any different that a non-ffv in the same conditions. Its all about what you put in the truck that makes the difference. Always run atleast 87 and call it a day. I already have 12k on my 16 FFV and driven it hard on nothing but 87 with no issues

I haven't noticed the cold start roughness and we have seen single digit temperatures here with the truck outside all night.

Yes, mine thought it was running Ethanol it got cold. But second gen trucks got an update to fix the problem. From what I was told, there wasn't an update like that for 3rd gens. But even in cold weather now, I don't have a problem, kept an eye on it for months and still look at ethanol levels from time to time.

The tech told me the next step was to install a fuel pump that wouldn't allow it to flood the motor like it would with ethanol. They did that with tons of ffv trucks before the realized how much money it was costing them, and came up with this update. It's my opinion that the computer is resetting those levels to a zero value on a constant basis. Not sure if it's every time I start or shut the truck off or just on a refuel. The reason I think this is a lot of times it will read 0% and then 2.7%. whatever they did with the algorithm solved my problem though. Not really sure why they don't have the same fix for 3rd gens. Maybe they don't think there's any problem, but if I had a 3rd gen and couldn't get it fixed, I'd be a tick on Toyotas ass until it was. I've already had Toyota buy back one truck with my states lemon law, so I know they will work with you, but you have to go up the ladder.

I am totally addicted to Tundra Life now!
I have a 2017 SR5 5.7 FFV and I swear something is up with this damn truck! Feels nothing like my 2019 1794 non FFV. I've had it for 400 miles only so far. I blew the whole tank out of the shit 87 octane it came with and last night filled it up slap full with 93 octane . Left my buddies house and hit the HWY at 55mph the whole way back to my shop at 1am. I drove 23 miles and I literally watched my Fuel gauge dropping as I was driving. I was like WTF is going on here?? Do you see this shit????? I checked my computer and it said 9.1mpg! Oh um duh that was obvious!!!!! I'm baffled right now. I pampered it the whole way 55mph enjoying the cool breeze for once in Florida. I have had a weird ass vibe about this fkn truck since day 1! My other 2 Tundras are sick and flawless!
