maybe i am being paranoid, but my 07 has 102k on it and the guy i got it from had it for 5 years/ always changed the oil at the same place every 3k but they used 5w-30. when i got it i changed the oil and used (as recommended 0w-20) i used full synthetic.....

now i am getting what seems like a little more noise from the motor....its not a knock or anything that sounds major but i never really noticed it before....could putting that thinner oil in it cause this? should i maybe change it to a 5-20?

it almost sounds like valves being a little louder....any input is appreciated

yep bank account is running low from it..
5w and 0w are really about the only difference is in cold weather.. take a bottle of 5w and bottle of 0w turn the bottles upside together they will finish within one second or tie.. except in very cold weather I'm talking like 20 and below.

Now the tap is becuase the wrong filter is put in.. yes wrong.. only use Toyota oil filters.. Some aftermarket ones don't have check valves to using a heavier paper so the oil pump has to work harder on start up so the tap of the valves telling you (no oil pressure here buddy) .. remember most engine damage and wear is on start up...

Not to mention, these motors are not really quite. All of them have a tapping noise. At least the three Toyotas I have owned.

well i put an oem filter in it. i had a snafu changing the oil and i went ahead and got an oem one from the dealer and swapped it...found out it was the oring but i think it has to do with the oil weight....only thing that changed....it is 100 degrees here right now and maybe 0-20 is too thin? everyone thinks i am being paranoid but i know it is louder since i changed the oil....also, i checked the oil level, and also oil pressure is good

DITTO^^^ my 09 Taco 2.7L 4 banger VVT had some serious tapping at 20 below for a minute or so (Lucas Upper Cylinder treatment stopped that). My 07 Tundra has the exact same tapping in very cold weather. Lucas stopped that too. As Mike stated.......normal.

If 0w 20 is in the manual for for high temperatures it's fine.

Thicker oil is NOT better in today's engines. Today's engines are more and more close tolerances I'm talking very close.(.001). Thicker oil can't get into the places thinner oil can go ( lower bearings and valve train for example with tight tolerances)..

I agree with Mike, for the most part. I do use full synthetic mobile 1 0w-30 though. My motor runs a lot smoother and quieter. Since its blazing hot here most of the year the motor runs well with this.

If it's cold where you live, I would stick with the 0w though. You don't want any problems at the start up of your motor. Even if it's not cold out, it's probably best.

Just throwing my 2 cents in. But really, running the recommended weight is the way to go. The design of the motor was meant for 0w-20.

Mike, for what worth, you really got me thinking about this. I'm going to go back to 0w20.

No . The 5.7 used to call for 5w30 . Then the CAFE standards made Toyota switch to 0w20 strictly for fuel economy reasons. Specs on the motor have not changed what so ever. Clearances are all the same . Look it up and compare in service manuals . 0w30 or 5w30 will quiet the noise . It's the 30 weight when the engine is at operating Temp that makes all the difference .

I run 0w-30 Amsoil, but I’ve run 0/5w-20 as well in the past. “Tick of life” like mentioned above is there either way. The 5.7 is a fairly “noisy” motor so unless your getting a CEL or its really out of ordinary, I wouldn't sweat it.

I'm having a similar issue with mine, I literally just bought it yesterday. 2015 with 110k 5.7. Maybe I was just too excited and was wearing the rose colored glasses, but I changed the oil today with 0-20 synthetic and I swear it has a tick it didn't before. Its not loud or horrible sounding, but a quiet-ish rhythmic tick coming from what seems to be the drivers side front most cylinder. Does it regardless of engine temp, and the oil pressure is fine. I just hope it's the "tick of life" I keep hearing about
