truck locks up in reverse

so i experienced something the other day that i have no idea about i was backing up and and my truck locked up almost felt like the back end was locked up when ever i hit the gas my truck wouldn’t go anywhere but shift to the side so i drive forward and tried again but had the same issue does anyone know what’s going on or has anyone has the same issue i thought it was really odd but i don’t think it’s the tranny because my truck seems to be driving and shifting fine in drive, please help.

 

Something definitely sounds busted in the rear end

 

if i take the diff cover should i be able to tell if i need new gears.

 

how long do you think it should take to replace it and is it easy to do or would it be something i should take to a mechanic?

 

i figured luckily i have a mechanic that lives across the street so i can just take it to him and ask him to fix it thank you for the advice.

working on getting a paint job and more stuff done with it but that’s in hold until i get the reverse situation figured out

 

i don’t do much off roading i live down a dirt road but it’s not terrible

my dad pulled my truck back in neutral and it went fine but when i put it in reverse it still locks up. going to start with replacing the tranny filter and seeing if that helps if not i guess it’ll be time to drop a tranny.

 

This happened to one of my trucks about 6 years ago. Snap ring in the OD assembly sheared and the truck wouldn't move in reverse. The dead give away was the big chunks of snap ring in the tranny pan.

 

is it a hard replacement or should a mechanic to do it?

 

It's pretty tough if you don't have all the tools. I completely rebuilt the tranny to the heavier duty specs. I had access to a lift, and a hydraulic shop press and I have a ton of tools. If you find large pieces of metal in the pan, if you can pull the tranny and take it to someone to be rebuilt, that'll save some coin.

 

would i be better off buying a new tranny or just rebuilding it at that point?

pretty sure reverse is just gone i found a good amount of metal shavings in the tranny fluid

it’ll be back on the road by thursday or friday got a used transmission with 109 miles on it shipped over night nothing wrong with the tranny they parted out the truck because it got hit so it’ll be on the way to the shop tomorrow morning

i actually called lkq i live in florida and they have them down here but a salvage yard would be your best bet because technically lkq is a salvage yard
