    Good Morning Everyone-

So I have been searching thread after thread trying to get even the most basic information about getting my truck tuned by D.A.P. and someone named 'Shrek' and am coming up empty. All I find is guys praising the tuning and posting pictures of a goofy little sticker. but nothing in detail. Not even D.A.P. Tuning website provides a breakdown of the benefits of their tuning services.

Can someone provide a detailed breakdown of why a new Tundra owner would want their truck tuned by D.A.P. and what the Pro's and Con's are? I hear things like smoother shifting and improved MPG but also hear that it voids the manufacturers warranty which would be a 'mandown' for me considering my truck is only 4 months old.

The service must be great since so many people are utilizing it. So on that note, I would love to hear from the experts!

It only voids if you get caught. The remote tune he offers can be reset so before you go in reset tune and drive 50 miles. If you have it done in person by him it can not be detected. Smoother shifting, tuned to your upgrades, better mpg(some say yes, some say no. Shrek does not claim it does but says most say yes) Go to Facebook and join tundracrew. can find all info and reviews there

The website explains everything.... but here is my personal experience. Got my truck daptized at 6k miles. Im at 11k now. Before the tune i felt as if i had to punch the pedal to get it to accelerate in normal driving conditions.... yes i know im driving a truck and not a sports car but still it didnt feel like i had a 5.7. The tune straight off the back changed that for me. Takes some of the restrictions off like the governor and frees up a little more hp. Changes shift points and feels so much smoother. I went from getting 15 mpg city to 17. And if i wanted to get on the gas and unleash the beast (lmao) i can this thing does get up and go now when i want it to. And im all stock besides the tune... 17 5.7 CM TRD offroad 4x4. If he tunes it in person the dealership cant detect it.... but if you do it yourself you will have to flash back to stock everytime you get serviced. I dont haul or tow anytime so i cant offer my opionion on that but im sure others will chime in.

But imo the tune is worth it... i had my truck serviced twice since the tune and no issues with the dealer.. i feel like i could get a little more better mpg but i am a bit more heavy on the pedal now with the tune lol.

I’ve been pondering on getting dapped or not, I have the bullydog and to me honestly it sounds like the same thing the bullydog does, the only difference is dyno sheets and others have said BD has been proven to lose power but it doesn’t feel like it. I really want to believe in this dap tune but it feels like the BD also smooths shift points, truck moves faster with less pressure on the skinny pedal, remove speed limiter, but then again I felt like the BD is the same thing as pressing the tow/haul button but BD provides more features like being a code reader and to monitor gauges. If you want power to your truck on a budget get a full race exhaust from bamufflers, I want the Supercharger but that’s too expensive, just my take on the matter......

I’ve heard only positives about DAP. My take is I’m not willing to risk a $40k+ truck for some extra power and different shift points. If something goes wrong, you may find yourself SOL with a large invoice to repair ABC. Just my .02. Toyota engineered it with expectations of it lasting for a very, very long time. The tune may jeapordize it and shorten the longevity of the engine. (Same applies to SC’d)

Anecdotal reports are great, but I personally would never add a tune to any of my vehicles without a dyno chart. This from a long-time hot-rodder. That is all.

Agreed. I really trust that Toyota knows what is best overall. I'm not racing my truck and I'm satisfied with the power and the way it feels.

If I wasn't happy I would go with a SC.

They have.. too many issues with folks popping motors and then flashing it back to stock when taking it back to the dealer for "warranty".

Ditto, especially with no AF chart.

Nope. Technically, there is no issue with you doing this while the truck is still within warranty. Just don't expect Toyota to do anything about it if it grenades.

My biggest beef with this stuff is that he won't tell you what he is doing, from a technical perspective. He just promises stuff like smoother shifting and more power, but without any actual proof that items are being changed it's a tough sell for me. Our butt dyno can justify anything, even if you loose power, simply because we paid for it to and want it to.

I've called him multiple times attempting to understand his process and each time I've been effectively told to go pound sand. I get the sales pitch ordeal about how much more power it's gonna make and how much better it's gonna shift, but I haven't been able to get exactly how he does it. That's a huge red flag for me. Any other tuner across the nation will tell you exactly what they expect to do based on some simple questions about your setup.

What I assume he is doing is logging CAN protocols to translate them and then change them. Kudos to the guy if he has in fact figured it out, but I'll be sticking with my stock 350hp until I have some real data.

I have the DAP Tune as well on my 2015 SR5 5.7L
    It is awesome.
Quicker acceleration, smoother shift points, slightly better MPG and no hunting for gears.
I have a 7inch lift with 35 MTS and it put some pep back.
Best way to describe it is like the truck got a shot of caffeine.

BUt I would definitely get 4.88 gears over DAP. The gears made the best difference I have seen.

Buried somewhere deep on a facebook page as opposed to on their actual website? Seems like an odd business approach. Something still smells...

Not sure, why the Dynos are not posted on the website.
Maybe because it is a 2 person company of which one travels the country doing the tunes, while the other is busy writing the tune for 4.6L engine.
Maybe because any city he goes, there is a line of Tundras waiting for the tune.
Maybe because he gets so many Tundra owners contacting him he can barely keep up, let alone update his website.

However, if you are seriously interested in the Dyno charts or have any questions for the man, but do not want to search the FB Tundracrew Group, then he is available by email.....
Out of the Hundreds of tunes he has done in Texas alone, no one has had any problems.
Only reports of better acceleration, smoother shift points, no hunting for gears, and some better gas mileage.
In addition, all engine, tranny, oil temps remain at factory specs....

Can you still run 87 octane or do you have to run 93?

Wow heres a quote from Facebook page, looks like he's really busy with this.

"My public apologies again for the delays, another 100+ emails and 217 PMs taken care of tonight, along with R&D on the 4.6L tundra, and some other tunes, and still working on the FFV SC tuning. We're doing the best we can given the circumstances to get to everyone ASAP"

You can run 87 and still get the benefit.
However, Shrek recommends running 93 to see the full benefit of the tune.
With that said, I am happy with the 87 octane results.

Here is another quote I found about octane

"To all 4.6 owners, the 4.6L hates 87oct more than the 5.7L. On 87 oct the truck was pulling 8-10deg of timing on the factory tune due to knock retard(detonation). The truck is now tuned, and out driving on 93oct. We are letting it go through the learning curve, and will update later with results.

To all You non believers about Octane differences. It’s real, so now I have confirmed, stock 5.7L and 4.6L absolutely hate 87oct gas. I’d advise if you love your vehicle, quit running trash gas"

So your reason is because so many people are happy, that automatically qualifies it as great, even though no viable data has been provided? Pretty sure that's how some dictatorships have been started...

Most of the guys getting the supposed flash know very little about engine tuning and how a PE table, a VE table, or a timing table works. For those of us that actually dabble in it, if a company knows what they are doing, they have no issues talking about details. I can call any professional tuner and discuss these facts based on setups and what would be best for a specific situation. I haven't seen anything from this guy. I'll try to contact him again to see if I get a response, but I'm still iffy at best.

To you secondary point about the dyno runs, unless they are done back-to-back with the same environmental conditions with the engine at near similar temps and the same exact dyno, it's not an apple-to-apple comparison. My cam'd LS has a variation in power based on ambient air. Running a dyno at 12pm on a warm day and then running it later in the day when it's cooled off by 20-30 degrees will show different power results.

Again, kudos to the dude if he has figured it out man. He may be the first and will probably make bank. No reason to get butt hurt, we are just discussing the possibilities and some of us are iffy because we are data driven folks.

No my sole reason are the dyno charts I saw. and second the many many individuals who have reported zero issues while reporting gains

Yes please contact him. He can talk logrthyms and ECU programing language. I can not, so I ask my peers and review the results.

Maybe thats why it is not on his website..... Each truck is different and he posts dyno results for the trucks that get tuned in person at his shop near Dallas that request it.
However, if you want to see the dyno results for that particular truck, they are on Tundracrew FB Page

No one is butt hurt. I really dont care if you get the tune or not. It is not my truck and not my money.
However, just merely pointing out the facts. Dyno results are there, he is super busy with all the traveling, only a 2 person company, there are gains, and he stands behind his product.
PLus for whatever reason I dont want the tune, I can easily remove it.

You'd be hard pressed to find a Tundra owner who has re-flashed to stock or any other tune from the DAP. Hell, I just got back in from San Luis Pass and Dustin was out there tuning for us - 9 guys got DAPtized. He held a Q&A before he commenced and answered every question thoroughly. He will provide dyno results to anyone who asks for them. Tundras are about 15% of his business (quoted from him) and yet I've seen him come out to our meets to tune & talk trucks more than I've seen some other members. He's extremely knowledgeable but more than that, he's a good guy who backs his product 100% because he's done his R&D and is devoted to the happiness of his customer base.

    Yup totally agree.
This is his 4th time back to Houston alone, and each time 10 to 20 members from Houston Tundras FB group sign up.
