Got a black SR trim and that means I have a silver painted grill surround/bulge.
It has nagged at me long enough, gonna give painting it a shot and either match it to my black or do a flat black rough texture coating on it.
I figure a decent sanding, quick shot of primer, and good to go.
Not really looking at PlastiDip as I don't want to re-do. That front end tends to catch a good bit of chips/impacts. And, not looking to spend all the $$ for the replacement of these or the BumperShelz. Keeping it inexpensive...

Who has gone down this road and what's the results? Trying to keep it simple but good enough...experienced painting input welcomed.

I tried it. My Tundra is the Magnetic Grey color. Results were just OK. I did the prep that you mentioned in your post and covered it with a clear coat afterwards. Maybe the black would be easier to paint and have it look close to OEM but the magnetic grey did not. Fast forward two weeks and my hood bulge flew off on the highway coming back from a camping trip. Yes I shit my pants. When It flew off it broke the clips for the grille also. I had to replace both and got color matching pieces.

If you go the painting route I would really take your time when doing the application and wait for good outdoor conditions. Best of luck!

Much appreciate your sharing walking this path.
I may just tape off and leave pieces in place, apply flat textured finish, and that way reel in expectations of what is to be the finished product.

I recently changed my grille to a Pro grille and ended up painting a spare chrome surround that I got from OfferUp MGM. I didn't do all the proper steps but I did scuff the chrome up then just spray painted it and spray painted a couple layers of clear coat. It came out pretty decent, you can see the difference in shade but only if your really looking for it. I know it may not last forever but I still have my original grille with surround should I ever want to reinstall that.
