I told him the prices that I had already been quoted on warranty and maintenance (from help in other related threads in the forum). With my driving patterns, I was looking at a 6yr/125k Plat warranty and told him I was also considering an extended Toyota care maintenance plan. He stated that what I was quoted was for 10k oil change intervals, but if I went through their dealership, it would be 5k due to Idaho severe use conditions. His price for the warranty and maintenance combined came to just a hair over the other quotes I had for both (higher on the warranty but lower on the maintenance plan). I just checked the Toyota Extra Care paperwork to be sure I wasn't lied to and it states 5k intervals.

Got it, I didn't know that there's a separate option for 5k oil changes... I would have bought that

It’s all irrelevant, 10k all day! I bet there is no difference in performance or longevity from someone changing their oil at old school 3k or 10k with a modern oil. Been living by 10k oil changes in multiple Toyotas for over 10 years and never had an issue. I have friends who are die hard GM guys and they think I’m crazy as well….

Changed oil after 1k miles. Will do another one at 5k, then every 5k thereafter.

Why would I want dirty oil to be in the engine during break-in period? I value my things a lot and take good care of them.

FYI it happened to me by Toyota. So when I first purchased 2011 tundra. I was going to do 10000 mile oil changes. Did my first change at 10000 just never felt right. So I went in at 15000 asked for an oil change. Was told not due .(blah blah). Ya just to make me feel better I want 5000 mile oil changes and tire rotates. So they did and when they did so the also changed my oil from synthetic to conventional never asked me or Said anything. Not paying much attention to the tickets I found out later after a diffrent toyota dealer changed my oil for me and put in synthetic oil. I developed a rear main seal leak not 2000 miles into synthetic oil. So long story if you ask toyota to do it they might change the type of oil you currently are using.

I'll stick to following what the manufacturer says. Trust me, it is a lot less stressful and I don't have to worry about them not wanting to do it, changing the oil from synthetic to conventional, or lying and saying they performed an oil change when they really didn't. Again, everyone has to make their own decision.

I go 5 months or 5k miles maximum with all my vehicles. 10k just seems way too long between oil changes for me.

Unfortunately, we live in different times, and QC is definitely lacking on this vehicle. On a '23, I have at least 2 of the TSBs that should have been addressed in the first year.

I'll change the oil myself and send a sample to Blackstone.

As to the 10,000mile vs 5,000 mile change interval, I just got a Toyota app alert that I have an appointment at my dealer for a 5,000 mile oil change in May. Not that I even made an appointment. Not that I plan to keep it, even if it is free. I am a DIY. But I am in the every 5k camp nonetheless.

Do any of you send your oil in to get analyzed, like Bourbonator said? Also is there a way to prime to oil pump before you start it back up after draining the oil? Im probably goingto let Toyota take care of the first scheduled oil change.

This is the whole point. Its just got to last until the warranty expires and then they are off the hook...
The trend of today is people not keeping their vehicles as long as they used to. So they will sell it and it becomes someone elses problem.

Toyota is covered either way. There is a "severe duty" section in your owners manual. Probably most of you fall under it.

Anyway, you do you, I know what I'm going to do because I plan on keeping this for at least 200k, hopefully more.

Hey Euro. If I were you ,I wouldn’t change it at all. At the rate your going, you’ll destroy the truck before the oil hurts the engine.:sorry:

Idaho severe use conditions? First I've ever heard of such. It's not like it gets Minnesota cold here..

I also live off a dirt road, tow a few times a year, and haul 1000+ lbs weekly. I didn't think any of that was "severe use" for a pickup, but I guess I need to RTFM.

The severe use that most of us fall into is stop and go, short trips, etc. in the burbs and cities. That doesn't sound like the Idaho I know. But the cold? C'mon, now. I lived there once upon a time and the winter cold was astonishing. I can't even come up with proper adjectives for it. We used to have to ride buses to the INEL site and had a half mile walk to the bus stop. That was a lot of fun at 2:00AM when it was -40 degrees F, I'll tell you. THAT was severe use on my body. If you didn't have an engine block heater for your vehicle you might be stranded for a couple weeks at a time.

Weather in North Idaho isn't the same as it is down South in the high desert. We normally see lows in the single digits, though our wind chill numbers are much lower. Lowest I've recorded with my weather station this winter was -17° F with wind chill around -40. So, as the kids these days say, "same-same, but different."

ETA: the point being, my friends from Minnesota tell of highs in the -20s, before wind chill.

I never made it up the northern part, but it's suppoed to be beautiful up there. Just had a thought... since my Tundra is Lunar Rock I need to do a road trip back that way, making sure to visit the Craters of the Moon. ;-0

Fyi I just got my Platinum Maintenance Toyota Care booklet that I bought from Jerry, and it has fine print that Severe Service isn't covered by this maintenance, only standard use. Yes, it has 5k service intervals included but oil changes are only every 10k as per standard service in the truck manual

Unless anybody has blackstone type analysis, its all acedotal. If you feel better changing before the manufacturer and/or its free, then definitely do it. However, that's not any reason for somebody else to. "Because it feels good, makes sense, seems better, etc" are all things to make yourself feel better. (no judgement, I'm similar, hahaha)

And a Blackstone analysist will only tell you after you have an issue. Its like going to the hospital after you're dead... I would rather prevent it before it happens...

Not because it feels good, just being conservative. Changing early has zero downside except for a little extra cost. And, likewise, assuming that you are not in a severe duty scenario and that you are good to go on 10,000 mile intervals without a Blackstone analysis is also just anecdotal and maybe wishful thinking.

Extended prepaid maintenance, it starts after two years free oil changes.

There was a YouTuber who did Blackstone analysis on new Tundra at 10k miles. Results were bad. I'm not sure if this is the video where he explained his results, but it's this guy https://youtube.com/watch?v=R11zJc328_A&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE

^that type of stuff seems actually beneficial. I get the "it feels good to do it early" and I'm certainly a person that does that too. No stones are coming from me on this topic, hahaha. I'm merely saying real analysis is needed. I'm not educated on it, so there might actually have been benefits for the motor to have the oil in for a certain period of time or something like that. For example, I wonder if there is a point that it becomes actually bad to do it early. What if you changed your oil every day? Would that just be a money waste, or could there be negative effects?

Just my random way of thinking. I'm positive when our Tundra shows up that I'm not going to wait for 10K to change the oil.

What do you mean by "change it early"? 3000 miles???
Asking because 5000 miles is not changing it early if you fall under the severe duty criteria.
Changing at 5000 miles is changing it on time if your use case is under any of the severe duty criteria.

I'm talking in generalities for the most part. If a car manufacturer suggested 5k changes, folks are going to do 2500 and 3000 mile changes. Etc.

I worked for a rental car company, so oil changes were by the manufacturer recommendation. Never early due to costs, never late due to liability. For me, I sent them in early, hahah.

When car is new, the parts in the engine are new too, when engine is running, all of the parts are getting used to each other (aka break in process), some micro metal shavings appear in the engine because of this process. These micro metal shavings get around throughout the engine and in the long run do have negative effects (oil isn't lubricating as well anymore, probably not good for the seals and other components) - so this is the reason why you want to change your oil early at 1k miles or so.

This break in process isn't bad for the engine, it's good, that's how all of the new parts get "aligned" with each other. You want this to happen for about 1k miles so that most parts will get majority of their break in done, then you want to get rid of the dirty oil that this process causes.

Does this first oil change matter in a short term? <100k miles No.
Will this make engine healthier at the 150-200k miles mark, I believe so.
