What gen tundra/sequoia do you have and why? How did you come across it? Any interesting back stories? Any particular reason you went tundra vs something else?

My dad bought an 02 4x4 access cab v8 new back in 02 and used it for general contract work up until 2013 when he sold it to me. I flew down to DFW and drove it back to Amarillo and fixed up a bunch of stuff, new tires, stuff like that and sold it back to him in 2015. 3 years later I kept asking him for it back as it had been sitting for a year when his wife finally convinced him. So me and a buddy took a trailer down on July 4th 2018 and brought him home.

I'd come close to making the leap from GM to Toyota a couple of times. In all my decades, through dozens of cars, I'd never owned a Toyota but my better-3/4 swore by all hers. So back in 2011 we bought a Highlander and the thing was flawless. One year later, I bought a Camry as a 2nd vehicle for putting around.

Around 2016, my dad, who turned me into the GM loyalist I've been most of my life, heard how happy I was with our two Toyotas, and went out and bought a 2nd or 2.5 gen Tundra or wtf-ever they're being called these days. I was coming to a crossroads with the '98 GM 1500 I was driving a year or two later and started hunting around. I knew I didn't want one of the dumbass-looking short-bus-sized pickups that was peppering the market, but I wanted a capable truck with V8, and ideally 4WD. 1st Gen ticked off all the boxes.

A few casual months of hunting llater, I landed my '06. Doesn't look like a short bus, though its primary driver is probably mentally-deficient (defective?). Has all the options, bells & whistles I could possibly want, way more than my previous two GM trucks, and far more comfortable, but lacks all the other BS convenience features I hate in modern vehicles. And it's 6-lug. My only gripe is, and the only thing I miss about GM, is the abundance of quick, bolt-on power options you can typically get with any GenIII/GenIV GM small block to add HP/TQ. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to have the added reliability. The good looks are icing on the cake.

(Quick edit just to say, I really wouldn't mind having a pre-'98 1st gen Taco also, 2.4L/2WD xtra cab with power windows/locks as a secondary gas-sipper rig to FI)

Bought my 2.5 gen from my dad.

I was honestly surprised when he bought it coming from 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks for decades (he has smaller ranch vehicles to do daily stuff that rarely see pavement) since the Tundra can't handle his ranch work hauling tractors, bull dozers and several tons of fertilizer etc. He mainly got it to haul stuff to and from his vacation house in Colorado from TX. I knew there would be a time he would need to go back to an HD truck and told him I would buy it from him. He bought his HD truck on a Tuesday. I went to the bank Wednesday and picked it up that Saturday.

Everything i've got is first gen.

grandpa outlived his forever truck when a shop couldnt get a drivers door latch, and after a 6 month wait, said eff it and bought a 2wd '21 taco.
I Let him drive it everytime i take it back to houston. He misses it, but the taco is easier in parking lots, and easier for grandma to get in/out of.
    FD5EE2F0-08A9-42FE-B875-5D5AC616BF1F.jpg
    they're the exact same size*

    * taco has a higher floor and roof, and grandpa is longer torso & shorter legged, so he hits his head and cant see close 2 lane stoplights. He is averaging 22 instead of 14, but he sits and idles. Taco doesnt need an interior, and has a much tighter turning radius.

** i maintained this truck from '02-'15, (step) grandpa is a smart cookie, we taught my brother, 2 generations of cousins, and his biological grandkids how to do all the things. Tires, brakes, fluids, batteries, troubleshooting, all of it. Was grandpa's favorite part of christmas.

I went to the dealership and paid invoice price in cash for mine back in 02. It was back at the time I could inquire anonymously who had what I wanted and then I could pit one dealer against the other for prices not giving away they had the vehicle and options I wanted.

It was easy to find invoice prices and hidden dealer incentives. Not so easy today.

Owned a 2015 Silverado (lease) liked but smaller cab -> turned back in, 2013 Chevy Cruze for about a year and needed a pickup, 2016 Ram (used) mechanical issues -> repaired and sold. Later inherited a 2013 Tacoma 2wd access cab from my grandfather, very solid truck and I enjoyed driving it. Test drove a 2020: Silverado, F-150, Ram. Silverado - liked the exterior but interior felt tight and uncomfortable. F-150 - wife, her family and my family all come to thoroughly dislike Ford, but I wanted to be objective and test drive them all, ended up not feeling right. Did some research on the Tundra and shopped the internet for a 2-3 months eyeing what I wanted. Test drove a 2018, sold me on comfort, reliability, tow capacity, affordable, advanced tech doesn't appeal to me, turned out to be an easy decision. In 2021, the 2022 Tundra was revealed and determined it was just not for me. I wanted to have a 2021 (new) version of my 2018 and I was able to find a good deal (msrp ) during the heart of Covid but they gave me $2k above my purchase price on the 2018 so I jumped on it while I could. It was the truck I wanted, local, still in transit and inventory on the '21 were dwindling. Call it luck, but I fell into it at the right time so the dealership was motivated to sell so they could allocate '22s for their lot. Very happy and haven't looked back nor missed a gas station since.

Build Date on 2021: 10/21. Took delivery on 11/5/21.

Pops bought the silver truck many years ago. I grew up in it, and I rebuilt it. Mostly. The OGs know the tale. I've posted about it many a time. Y'all know I longed for at least 4WD after putting around for years in the 2 wheel peel. Y'all also know I wanted the V8...

Along came Crackie on faceboob marketplace. About an hour from me. He was an impulse buy that turned out great. I've got the regular cab that I didn't know I wanted, I've got the V8 that I DID want and the push button 4WD.

I wanted another first gen because I didn't want any of the modern "conveniences" of a newer truck.

Had a '05. Sold it to my dad with the caveat that I get first dibs on buying it back from him when he's done with it. Bought a '22. Loving it so far.

Shiiiit. I dig on that window too! I've been eyeballing some electric jack kits for it.

May have to take you up on that air bag offer later on down the road.

I don't understand the when does ky thaw? Question...

Bought my '21 in Sept '20. Over 32k miles now. The main purpose was to be the best single vehicle to cover all the following needs:
daily driver, camping/adventure rig, off-roader, tow pig, hauler of everything from work gear to home project materials to harvested deer.

My absolute #1 criterion was long-term dependability. I am allergic to dealer service, and I want to come back from places like this every single time:
    IMG_6792.jpg
If I ever sell it, it will be because of payload. I'm just over GVWR when loaded up for camping. The 1270 lb on my door jamb gets eaten up quickly when all five of us plus our dog and all camping gear are in the truck.

I used to wheel in a Mitsubishi Montero until I got T-boned back in 2000 which forced me to take a long break from the hobby. Then I went snowboarding with a buddy who had a 2nd gen CM and I fell in love instantly with the size, space and looks. About a month later I bought my 2016 CM brand new and that's when I discovered there was a black hole in my wallet.

Taking the Tundra where no other (IFS) Tundra dares to go has been a blast. The journey so far has been fun and it's on track to get even better.

When my wife and I got together, we each had a compact car, which was fine as we each had a condo, but I was starting to feel the itch of a truck. That itch got stronger after trying to Tetris everything that she "needed" for a camping trip into her Corolla a few times. My condo finally sold a couple months after our wedding and, once we got into our house and I was doing things like hauling eavestrough in my Kia Forte Koup, I knew I had to buy a truck.

Once we sold her condo in June 2019, I started looking around for a new 2018 Sierra or Silverado with the max trailering package. Thought I found one; it was about 200 miles from where we live but on the way to where we were headed for a camping trip the next week. We stopped on our way down to test drive it, talk price and put a deposit down. When we stopped on the way back to finalise paperwork, the sales manager told us someone had "tapped it with their tailgate in the parking lot", requiring everything from the right front quarter panel to the rear bumper to be replaced. o_O

At that point we walked and I started researching 2020 GMs. Then in November of that year, when we were hearing about the issues with failing brakes on those trucks, I decided to test drive a 2020 Tundra. Loved it and, because of the deal they had at that time, it was over $10k less than the best price GM would offer me, even with the discount I had through work.

Put in my allocation request for an SR5 in MGM, impatiently waited through the rail strike and finally got it December 31st, 2019.

First ever purchase without personally "Driving it" Internet purchase was a complete success, even the delivery went off without a hitch

This '02 Tundra Limited AC 4x4 is exactly what I "needed"... It does what my Lexus RX 330 tried to do and more ;)

We have been Toyota since 1980 and my 1st Toyota pick-up was an '85 ; 4 speed, single cab, short bed ,4 cylinder with locking hubs... that truck earned its "wings" ,: taught my wife and 3 younger brothers how to drive stick/use 4-WD :) I sold it to my younger brother when I purchased my 1st "Large Car", an '87 Peterbilt 357 dump truck :burnrubber:

I did "break" the cycle when a "Southern Toyota Dealership" got stupid and asked why I was asking for my wife's opinion between 2 Tacoma's...:censored: We purchased a Ford Ranger XLT extra cab...

Since then we have had numerous Yota's BUT my '02 Tacoma was my baby; every campaign was completed on that 'lil truck and when I sold in '14 it had just 72,000 miles on it.:(

Drove Tacoma's for decades, some till they hit 300,000mi.
Neighbor friend was a salesman at a local Chevy dealership.
While driving home from work I spy a big white lifted Tundra on his lot and pull in. I walk in and ask him what's the deal on the Tundra.
He throws me the keys and says bring it back in a few days.
    The rest is history.

Disclaimer: I cut/pasted from my introduction post.(minor edit for timeline and current pic). It's relevant, it's not cheating.

I had always been a Ford guy, my pops was a Ford guy. My last truck was an F150 that i bought new and drove for 13 years. Loved that truck but had to put her down. So there I was, in the market for another Ford. I had always liked Toyotas and said if I got anything other than a Ford, it would be a Toyota. Whatever it may be, I needed a truck pronto, as I had been borrowing vehicles to get to work. Can't carry many tools on a hardtail chopper(my 2nd vehicle). So, in my urgent search, I came across this first gen tundra, pretty low miles (for a toyota), looked clean, and for a decent price, and not too far from my house. Bought it the next day. Stoked everyday since then, which was roughly 29 months ago. I've done quite a bit of work to it, and of course, still plan on doing a bunch more. 1st pic is actually from the sale ad, and how it was as it became mine. Pretty sure it was 100% stock. It was

Every time I see this, I feel like The Virus is ready to jump out from behind that damn Juniper bush or whatever. Looks like it's trying to stalk and pounce.

6 lug crew, represent! At least Toyota got one thing right with the new gen!

People are FAR more hesitant to pull out in front of me now. My next mod might be a never ending cycle of paper tags.

That's another reason i've mastered doing tire swaps at home without a machine, and buy used or take-off tires. That's not true. It is an exhausting battle. Every. Single. Fucking. Tire.

Since you're the grill expert, your opinion might matter a little bit

It is mesh, kinda. Its perforated sheet aluminum. Rather than typical mech of weaved wire, it's a sheet with a bunch of holes punched in it. Same idea. and the 'bro studs' are actually tiny bolts, each to it's own tiny 'L' bracket, and another to the surrounding trim. I've long had the idea to backlight it but yet to follow thru. I think it would look good, but it would have to be sealed off to only light the grill face

33x10.5x16 was hard enough to find. 35x10.5x16 just doesn't exist. Don't think I'll go to 35s for a loooong time.
