I'm not sure about Pennzoil, but Amalie and Valvoline were both known for sludging up engines.

I grew up with 3k changes. The last 500 miles on a 5k change really starts to bug me, but changing every 5k, i dont have to write down the last change, who else had a list of milage written on the back of their regestration sticker?

I used to, but now, i've got a PC file with pics and reciepts.

my last oil change i got nervous at 4k, decided to run some MMO through it, and got dirtier oil when i changed, because my first change was super clean after 3-4 k to get me on a schedule of 5's.

I've never once in my life heard of oil seals going bad after 5 years from the color of oil. The UOA will tell you everything you need to know about the condition of your oil, if changing out good oil that's slightly discolored floats your boat, then go for it.

You change your oil based on color, well, I hate to break it to you. But every time you change your oil, then drive it any amount of time, it's contaminated, so you might wanna change it every time you drive it, based on how you change your oil now.

I'll stick to the facts and the science behind oil, and the great team of oil engineers and chemists I know.

From someone that does industrial forensics on seals and gaskets.

    Seals typically fail from

Abrasion ( particulate matter grinding, shaft abrasions etc.)

Fit (can be anything from dimension too small for proper seal tension, egg wear of shaft, misalignment creating a gap)

Installation (cocking a seal, damaging the garter spring/element)

Heat ( over time this will fatigue any polymer)

Dry Running ( a seal needs a bit of lube to live- its not a quality of the oil but the long term absence leading to abrasion and/or thermal fatigue)

Pressure ( usually seen as an extrusion but can be just blow by)

Normal end of life ( no polymer compound lasts forever with all properties intact)

I left off things like mechanical damage because those failure modes are usually random and external to the seal proper.

Basically the same for gaskets but gaskets are prone to set and need retorquing evenly, sometimes they saturate/delaminate ( even rot)

Sometimes a change to a much different fluid that's thinner or a temp change will leak at certain grades but not at others.

So, to say a gasket or seal failed due to an oil, extended oil change interval or some "normal to that application" contamination- while POSSIBLE would be at the highest end of improbable and require significant supporting hard evidence to prove it.

I have 3 oil analysis in my post. 2 analysis at 8k OCI and 1 at 10k OCI.

I trust the oil analysis reports, and the experience of seasoned mechanics to help me determine oil change intervals. I’m at 5,000 oci on my Tundra. On my Ford Transit 3.5 TT I’m at 2,500 oci.

Whatever this forum told me to do
these oil analysis reports are like kryptonite to internet gurus.

proves the know it all's wrong every time.

the only time i see a real difference in oil reports is when they are taken past 7500 miles.

under 7500 miles, all oils behave in a similar range.

the <7500 range varies so little it is safe to say - you should not pay more than Kirkland rates for oil.

and lather on - I rotate tires every 5k....so 2 birds get knocked out.

With the more aggressive MT tires I've done rotations at 3k

I do 3k rotations with my Duratracs. The two biggest complaints I hear about them is that they’re loud on the highway, and they wear quickly and unevenly. I don’t have either one of those issues with 30k miles on them.

Yep, I was doing 3k rotations on my Toyo MTs, Kumhos, and now I try to do them with the MT Baja ATs. I hate uneven wear.

I've always taken the back tires straight to the front, then crossed the front whem taking them back; LF to RR and RF to LR.

I've been doing 6k rotations (with my OCI). So far at 20K they haven't become loud yet and seem to be wearing evenly. I've found pretty much any AT/MT will get louder without frequent rotations.

    Ya.

I've been warned about the KO2s I put on just under 3k ago.

Probably going to step it upto 3k. Had initially hoped to keep it with the oil change at 5k, but I would like to keep the tires quiet as long as possible.

I do. Rears go straight to the front. Fronts go to the opposite rear. That’s the pattern for RWD/part time 4WD vehicles.

I'm all for this and do any AWD vehicles I've had this way. The Toyota manual says just front to back, that's what I've been doing..... Maybe next season after the snows come off I do some criss-crossing. Nothing is cut and dry. Now you've got me thinking about tires in an oil thread, down the wormhole!

    Note: I know I can't criss-cross snow tires (directional).

I'll take full responsibility for the derailment...

I've done simple front to back for so long since the bimmer has directionals on both sets. Not to say I can't learn new tricks.
