Looking at my local dealership, that's the opposite. People are on a long waitlist to get their hands on Platinum or 1794 4x4, and RWD SR5 can sit on the lot for a few days without a buyer.

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
I am not talking about what people want to buy vs inventory specifically I’m talking about what resources the manufacturer is going to allocate based on a finite limited availability of those resources.

If you’re Toyota and you can’t get chips you aren’t wasting the ones you have building a Yaris to make a net $1,000 if you can slot the chip to finish an LX600 that will make a net $11,000.

If I were Toyota, I'd want San Antonio to only build 1794 or Platinum 4x4 for the next few months. In this market, they will sell each single one of them and the margin of profit is definitely higher than SR5.

That has always been the way of production for Tesla (build the most profitable model first and then to the masses), and people seem to be okay with it

I’m surprised Toyota isn’t doing that, but they will have set in place their production schedule for the first run probably a year ago. They’ll need to figure out what people want, gotta sell trucks to make the $$$.

Looks like high option trucks are in higher demand, so Toyota will adjust production if they’re smart.

I’ve rarely seen a manufacturer make less than 40% margins on their products. It’s mostly in the 50% range. Now resellers/dealerships are generally trying to stay around 30% on average. No way Toyota corporate is making only $600 on a vehicle.

2020 Corolla hatchback SE with BSM upgrade $20,750 bought in December of 2019 from Magic Toyota in Edmonds, WA.

Suck it. No way Toyota is lining pockets with that car.

Some Camry and Corolla trims hit in the mid 50% margin. It's all about mass quantities. A business model no brainer.

I will say though that it depends on how many of the vehicles they are making. Obviously the more they make the cheaper it is per vehicle. I think it was said that Ferrari doesn’t make as much per car as people think. But those are handmade and low production numbers.

Not even apples and oranges. Tesla was highly subsidized. Elon needs to sell the higher margin vehicles to pay off what he owes the tax payers.....US...just sayin

I think this is a smart move by Toyota. As mentioned by someone else already, Toyota needs this truck to compete with top-spec F150s and the Ram Limited. There are plenty of truck buyers who enjoy “luxury” trucks, myself included.

There are basically 5 type of truck buyers:
    1. Used for work (construction, farming, etc.)
    2. Used primarily for towing (however, serious towing needs aren’t met by ½ tons trucks)
    3. Overlanding fun
    4. Used for hunting/fishing, i.e., needed for off-road access
    5. Like/need the functionality of a truck bed and don’t do any of the things listed in 1-4 above

Speaking for myself, I fall into #5 above. I use the truck bed for household duties, whether it’s hauling a washer/dryer, mattress, etc., or simply bringing a weed eater to a repair shop or to a buddy’s house to let him borrow it. Trucks are a very practical vehicle and I don’t understand how any household survives without one. But, I also enjoy the creature comforts of a luxury car. That said, my Ram 1500 Limited is a perfect vehicle for me. Had Toyota offered a comparable truck previously, I would have considered staying with Toyota vs trading my 2017 Tundra for the Ram.

Up until this 3rd gen, even the Platinum/1794 couldn’t compete with other “luxury” trucks. They were nice compared to other Tundra trims, but people weren’t cross shopping top trim Tundras against the other top trim trucks.

Most people use their trucks as their DD. But, if your primary reason for having a truck is numbers 1-4 above, you sacrifice some of the creature comforts because functionality is more important to you.

Of course the 22” wheels will impact the ride quality. I think it is funny that I’m pretty certain every poster who made that comment about the wheels had aftermarket wheels/tires on their truck, even though their truck probably came with 18” from the factory, or 20” if they have a Limited or or higher non-TRD. My Ram Limited came with 22” wheels and is equipped with 4 corner air suspension. The ride was not nearly as bad as I was expecting it to be. However, I still swapped out the wheels for a set of 18s and 295/70 tires because I personally think more tire is a better look for a truck, even though I don’t off-road or anything like that. And I’m sure many Capstone buyers will do the same.

Bottom line is, Toyota is smarter than a bunch of people on an Internet forum. If they are building the truck, they obviously recognized the need for it. And from what I can tell, they’ve taken a lot of the features that have been available on other trucks for years now and created the Capstone. I think pricing should be in the $70-$75K range to compete. Top spec F-150s are pushing $80K and Ram is low $70K.
