Are vehicles soon going to be similar to the housing market where young adults have to go in together on shared purchase? I have a Platinum (that I bought for a really good price) and I cannot fathom spending double the amount on a vehicle. Of course despite the pandemic values, I still consider most non collector vehicles as depreciating liabilities.

If there is any glimmer of hope for supply/demand and price correction, I'd actually say it's my kids generation. My boys and their friends, of course like nice cars but they all want super economical cars and their seems to be a resurgence for the 90's "type" of nostalgia. small 2 wheel drive trucks, civic's , Isuzu troopers, etc. It's an interesting time listening to their conversations. It must be making the rounds on TIK Tok or something, lol. It's almost a revolt of excess, which is surprisingly refreshing.

That being said, It's not that I don't want one, I just don't have enough FU money to justify it.

Inflation. Your money isn’t the same. I don’t know why people are shocked. My Tundra was purchased for 24k new in 2010. Now it would be 33k, same spec in a 2022. Inflation inflation inflation.

I mean they printed hundreds of billions of dollars the past 2 years. No wonder Trucks are now 80k.

Very true. We are 300 million people in a 9 billion person world. Africa is next, Chinese are old news. Africans are increasing in wealth rapidly.

I think it's pretty sweet, although I felt like at this stage, they should just go with absurd chrome or polished alloy everywhere, and call it Canyonero instead of Capstone.

So how does the top of the line, option-bloated hybrid truck with 22" wheels have basically the same payload capacity as an SR5 doublecab 2x4?

Toyota is seriously sandbagging the payload numbers.

Like i said, sandbagging. A Powerboost has a slightly higher GVWR too but its payload capacity is lower than a non-powerboost F150, as it should be since it weighs 500 lbs more.

So either Toyota is using light duty components on the non-hybrids, or they are fudging the GVWR's to keep the payloads artificially low.

    is the tire size

anyone found any tires of this size other than the OE Bridgestone Dueler?
If I were to go 22 inches, it's pretty much a street truck and I'd love to see Michelin Pilot Sport level of performance tires available

What just happened to braincells at Toyota? This is "CRAPSTONE"
This looks like something that stays in a heat/ac garage and only gets talked about as a bragging point of stupidity.
22" wheels with shrink-wrapped tires will ride like ass with the boxed frame and require a detail service to come to your mansion to spend 2 hours per wheel to clean and polish.
White leather will require seat covers or a shower immediately before entering, to be driven by any working person or any family with kids or pets.
LED lights inside... Ok that's future cool shit and it looks somewhat cool.
More chrome to delete than any trim in history...$$$
And of course, in typical Toyota fashion... only the cab/bed configuration that they give you. WTF

I thought this was going to be the Platinum/1794/Pro offspring, not some douchey, over fancied, over marked-up, nothing really worth the $$ at all, and you can't even call it a truck anymore looks.
    Not for me thanks.
I like that they actually tried to do "something" different but NOT this is.

Absolutely no chance a $22-26K Corolla yields only $600 profit. Add a zero or close to that.

I hope they fixed that awful sound system. My 2019 came with the JBL system and was awful. Just in case, plan on ripping that out and replacing with an upgraded speaker/amplifier system.

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
It's a pickup truck for Lexus customers because Toyota realizes that their customers also are likely to have a high dollar luxury pickup in the garage too and they want in on the action.

Older buyers like chrome, they like the more conservative color palate. No one buying a Capstone wants it murdered out, or body color matched; they want it to look as luxurious as their Lexus and they associate chrome trim on the exterior as luxurious.

    Ok smart guy.

How much does Toyota make on a Corolla?
How much does Toyota make on a Tundra?

Wanna bet Toyota makes at least 8x more profit on a Tundra than a Corolla?

We bought a 2020 Corolla hatchback for 20,750. It's all LED lighting, drives itself, bigger infotainment with Android Auto, all soft touch materials inside, alloy wheels, BSM, kind of an underpowered Lexus.
    And it's made in Japan.
    Not much room for profit.

I'm quite certain Toyota would rather sling Tundras than Corollas.

The profit margin on the Camry and Corolla might surprise you. Quite profitable for Yota. Yota sales of Tundra's is peanuts compared to the Camry and Corolla.....huge profit margins... Camry's and Corolla's are made in mass quantities= $$$

Despite all the negativity, I actually like the execution of the capstone. This isn’t for truck buyers, it’s to compete with the F150 and 1500 Limited trims. F150 limited with 4WD and hybrid is $80k. I think if this comes in around $70-$72 they’ll get a lot of buyers. The buyers of this trim are considering their options when buying a CAR. and they consider things like massive depreciation and average to below average reliability on Lincoln, Range Rover, Porsche, Cadillac, BMW, Mercedes, Audi. They don’t need a truck they just want a nice, quiet, safe car and some care less about image and more about dependability and not losing $60k in their first 3 years (even if they have the money to lose they didn’t get rich that way). So they look at these super premium pickup options (which are all inexpensive when you consider some of the aforementioned ones). I personally think the Capstone is a great option for those people (at $70k you’re $10k ahead of the F150 and should have much better reliability). They also don’t need tow hooks lol but that’s a story for 100 other threads (I hope).

My point is, if Toyota can only secure a certain amount of resources due to current pandemic related production issues, you better believe they're going to lean heavily on the Tundra.

Typical profit margin for cars is 10%.
Typical profit margin for trucks is 25%

Plus transaction price for trucks is far higher than cars.

Typical Camry profit margin is in excess of 40% year over year. Tundra profit margin is less than the Big 3 trucks by leaps and bounds. Merica made. The Big 3 trucks that are made south of the border for peanut wages equals huge profit margins and steep discounts. Yota rarely offers steep discounts on the Tundra.

    Correct.

As an example if Toyota can only secure enough chips to make 1 million cars this year globally, they’re going to make 1 million higher margin vehicles than lower margin vehicles. Whatever that mix happens to be rich people are going to have new cars to choose from and poors will not.

    Listen, er, genius.
I don't claim to know everything, but I do know that a 2022 Corolla XSE starts at $26,075--and probably runs to close $28,000 with various and sundry dealer bs. That's a helluva lot of money for $600 (!?) profit.
This ain't 1982 when 'yota was practically giving these things away.

I can't comment on which model is more profitable, that was never my point; but I can assure you that your profit statement is a steaming pile of :stirthepot:.

    Carry on.

    Model: 2022 Toyota Corolla
    MSRP: From $26,075
