Agreed. What we really need is a new owner who is as interested in payload as we are to actually weigh their truck unladen and report back. Realistically the only true number we have beforehand would be the GVWR for that model. It's the actual curb weight then the calculated payload that would be determined by the weigh in.

So it seems Toyota is just stick default payload stickers on the trucks and not actually applying stickers for the actual truck in that configuration?

So here is a Limited Crew 2x4 at 1420 lbs just like the manual says:
    upload_2022-1-12_13-17-9.jpg

Limited Double cab 4x4 at 1490, just like the manual says:

    upload_2022-1-12_13-18-11.jpg

SR5 Double cab 2x4 at 1555. Yup, same as the manual:

    upload_2022-1-12_13-19-0.jpg

SR5 Double Cab 4x4. 1500, just like that manual:

    upload_2022-1-12_13-19-47.jpg

These are all the pictures from this thread. And they are lock step with the numbers posted in the manual. I really wonder if people went and weighed their trucks they would find out they have more payload than they think. These can't be right. The door sticker on the SR5 DC 2x4 shows 7035 lb GVWR, but it has a payload of 1555. That would suggest the truck weighs 5445 lbs.

Where's the 1940 lb payload that we all assume would come with an SR DC 2WD 6.5' bed?

My point is, the door stickers are BS. If you don't bring the truck to a CatScale than the door sticker might be selling the truck short by several hundred lbs.

I agree, but am just asking why you don't see 1940 lbs in the manual?

Y'all, I'd pull back on the assumption that the trucks have higher payload than the door jamb. The door jamb sticker is gospel, unless you can get Toyota to change it out for you, that's the official payload, like it or not. The second yellow sticker is how Toyota adjusts the payload on the primary sticker. It seems every yellow sticker is zero or negative value, haven't seen one yet that adds capacity.

And we still haven't been explained the payload disparity yet...

Payload = GVWR - Vehicle Curb Weight with full fluids (oil, coolant, full tank of gas)

Oem tonneau, side steps, spray in liner. Trd skidplate.
Not according to Toyotas fine print, payload is "for comparison only". The LCC is the "Gospel". The longbed 2wd has a higher LCC because of more games with GCWR...

Gospel to who... and for what?! There is no legal basis or requirement where the owner is concerned. If you are actually talking about the Brotherhood of Evangelic Fundamentalist Payload Stickerists :amen::yes:... then... ok. I guess you can make up the rules as you like.

Thank you for this information. Does the manual decipher the various model codes?

I disagree. The GVWR is all that matters. If you go cat scale with your truck and find it out its only 5300 lbs instead of the 5500 the payload stick suggests, and your GVWR is 7000 lbs, then you can load that truck up to 7000 lbs and you really have 1700 lbs of payload.

The reason people use the payload sticker is because, on most trucks, they are right. My F150 Cat Scaled within 20 lbs of the sticker.

If I was buying a Tundra right now or already bought one, i'd be driving over to the cat scale to figure out what it really is.

No clue why the stickers arnt up there. Maybe they are being hyper conservative and calculating the payload for a fully loaded truck with every option.

And that kinda seems to be the case. A Limited crewmax 4x4 is going to be heavier than as SR crew max 4x4. And yet the limited still gets the 1400 lb sticker and I am guessing maybe the SR would too.

You gotta look at GVWR, too. Is GVWR the same on those trucks? There was a range of GVWRs on the 2nd gens...6900 to 7200 if I recall correctly. It may be that Toyota is fudging GVWR in order to give the better equipped trucks (sunroof, spray-in bedliner, etc) comparable payload ratings.

In the pics you posted above, you can see two GVWRs on the other sticker: the 4x2 Limited crew was 7035, and the 4x4 SR5 double cab was 7000. I'm curious as to how wide the range is.

Last thing...knowing Toyota, this is a slim chance: the hybrid trucks are so much more powerful I'm wondering if they'll come with a higher payload package. Maybe the GVWR will be closer to 8k lbs on those, and we'll see 1940lb of payload in the double cabs. Not likely, but that would make sense...

    They are closer to 8000k.

    https://toyota-cms-media.s3.amazona...2_Toyota_Tundra_Product_Information_FINAL.pdf

This document shows a GVWR for a crewmax 4x4 of 7780 lbs and a minimum of 7230. The 7230 is what Andre's crewmax 4x4 truck is a few posts up, you can see it on the sticker.

Still, if his truck has a 7230 lb GVWR and has 1400 lbs of payload then they are saying it weighs 5830 lbs, which doesnt really add up but I suppose it could be true.

Either way, they are messing with the Payload sticker.

Hybrid appears to add 500-600lbs to the curb weight. Didn’t they say 13k lbs towing? I don’t see that anywhere…

Max towing is 12,000 lbs and it's listed under the 4X2 DC.

Some serious mental gymnastics going on in here.

Dudes, if y'all want to load your truck up however you see fit, knock yourselves out. But stop trying to justify it by airing out your dubious claims in public.

The freaking sticker literally says "should never exceed". Will you break your truck with your dubious maffs? Highly unlikely. I'm not arguing that you can't do it, I'm not trying to crimp your freedom to load your personal truck how you see fit.

If y'all want to win this argument with me, contact Toyota and have them put it in writing, better yet... issue you a capacity sticker that verified YOUR math.

That's what I mean by "gospel". Toyota has spoken, and those are the numbers, "should never exceed" is the only response Toyota will issue.

I don't like these numbers at all.
I try not to exceed, but a family of 4 (relatively light people) + dog + topper + skids + oversized spare + gear + a cooler = maxed out fast.

    Toyota marketing:
You can "tow" a space shuttle a few miles, but only haul 3 - 4 good sized people with purses.

Plenty of real world experience (15 years for the Gen2) is my "gospel". Toyota's CYA legalese is their business, not mine. Lifts and bigger tires aren't approved either, but nobody seems to get their panties in a twist about that!

Guess I'll just never understand why some of us are able to simply ignore the threads we could care less about while others are not. I can easily skip over the 'lift' or '37s' threads and don't feel the need to hop on them and post about how I think they look like crap or whatever. I'm not sure why people who don't care about payload feel the urge to constantly ingratiate themselves on thread topics they keep telling us they don't care about. You know you don't have to read and respond to every post on every thread on this forum, right? F@ck me!

The part that bugs me is making false claims like "the sticker is gospel". There is a lot of misinformation regarding payload and legalities that gets repeated millions of times. I wasted way too many hours sorting through it, and there is really nothing there. So it is like religion in that sense. If following the sticker is important to you, that's fine... but don't claim it's something it isn't.

I wonder if Toyota got gun-shy because a lot of folks reported that the payload stickers on the 2nd Gen appeared to underestimate the weight of stock trucks.

But again, GVWR. There's no justifying going on.

Unless you think you should not be able to load the truck to GVWR which has always been the ultimate limit to my understanding.

I agree for the most part.
I'm not confirming or denying whether it is illegal or instantly unsafe to exceed the GVWR, GCVWR, FAWR, RAWR, tire ratings or load carrying capacity (payload).
I'm simply trying to find a '22 Tundra that will tow our next travel trailer and haul our heaviest load while remaining within the specifications of the vehicle.
I'm not saying that anyone else must or should do the same. I'm not saying anyone is wrong for not doing what I'm doing.
I'm not trying to annoy anyone. I'm just trying to use whatever resources are available to help me achieve my goal.
You'd think that current, former and future Tundra owners would respect someone for trying to make a '22 Tundra suit their needs. Perhaps not.
Sorry to vent. Just about had it with this site.

Your gunna need a 1 ton dually if you wanna bring a cooler of beer with those purses.

Or maybe a minivan since they have more payload than a Tundra. :annoyed:

This is a wee modular electric vehicle (weighs 1400 lbs) called XBUS, that will be for sale in the EU this year. Street legal. It can be configured for a 1 ton payload! If you configure your Tundra to haul 1 ton, I guarantee it will handle and ride 10x better and last much longer.

You're overthinking this. Trust the manual numbers.
It's all about the shocks, rear air bags, the front brakes and of course trans cooling.
I've used these trucks to the max capacity and beyond, never an issue when the little things are addressed.
