    Evening everyone,
I am curious on everyone’s opinion on the TRD Sport Vs. TRD Off Road???

Currently own 16 DC SR5 TRD off road and will be trading it in for the 22 DC TRD Sport. FRIDAY

From a spec stand point the trucks are all most identical. Tundra states that the TRD Sport is .5 lower in the front.

I have been racking my brain if this is THE truck for me coming out of the TRD Off Road.

Looking forward to the many different opinions that this site offers.

    LED headlamps/fogs; interior footlamps.
Will it be driven like a 'sport' (mall cruiser) or genuine tough as nails off-roading? I think you can guess my answer on each...

Driven somewhere in between. I drive hwys a lot and live in a very mountainous part of NJ. I think the sport option offers the best of both worlds.
Also allows for the more aggressive tires that will be going on this truck.

I chose the sport due to not having to worry about exterior color matching and I love the sport wheels. Also the fact that I never put my Tacoma OR in 4lo the last few years hence not using the locker that comes with the OR.
I cannot accept the chrome cowboy mustache in front on the OR Tundras.

I test drove the sport and was not impressed. IMO it looks nice but doesn’t have the main off-road options like rear locker, DAC, and Crawl mode. Interior felt crammed.

Joro fully understand your opinion and respect it if you actually get to utilize those features. I do not. In the five years that I have owned my 2016 it has never been placed in 4lo. Four wheel drive really only when dealing with snow or ice storms. I am not the off roading guy. But love the rugged truck feel while driving and knowing I can do anything with the truck.

I hear ya but from a re sale stand point and overall bang for your Buck the TRD OR is the way to go. If it was the 2.5 Gen there’s no difference. In this 3rd Gen model there is. Granted I test drove a 2wd so sport model in 4wd should have a better stance. I would say it drove more like a cross between my wife’s old 2018 Audi Q7 3.0T with the SC V6 and a Tundra. Definitely smoother but less truck like. Cockpit has a GM feel not the oversized Tundra/Ford interior

I am. I’m just curious is the TRD Off road is worth it for the type of driving I do. If the suspension is comparable to accommodate both styles that I enjoy.

Plus I enjoy reading people different opinions.

They are more different from each other than the Sport and Off Road of the previous generation.

If color-matching is important to you, go Sport.
If you stick to pavement, go Sport.
If you venture off-road or want capability to do so, go Off Road. Bonus: ‘22 Off Road has rear locker, crawl control, multi terrain select.
If you don’t mind a bit of chrome that would come with that added capability, go Off Road.

Myself, I’d pick Off Road. You can color match the grill surround and whatever else later. It would be far more difficult to add the OEM locker/MTS/Crawl to the Sport later.

Something else to consider is you can get the TRD off-road package on the upper term levels but you can only get the TRD Sport package in the SR5 so depending on what options you want That's also something to consider. Me personally I'm getting a limited with the TRD off-road package.

    Well. Here is my update.

Contacted the dealer this morning. Consider my new truck ordered. I spent and hour there with everyone at the dealership and built out a 22 Crewmax Sr5 TRD Off Road in Lunar Rock with a bunch of other choice options. I let them keep the sport addition as the ride was too different from what I like.

    pricing was not awful either.

thanks for everyone’s opinions and conversation.

It felt like riding in a super nice avalaon. Suspension was not rugged like the TRD OR. It was more like a ford lightning over the FX4 if that makes sense.

if you are a paved road warrior and like to live life on the asphalt it makes perfect sense to get the sport. The OR is best if you like the best of both and a stiffer ride overall.

I did the same thing, had a Sport on order, and they are really sharp looking trucks, but just couldn't come out of owning an OR for 11.5 years into a non-OR.. For me I too like the more robustness of the OR and it suits me better for hunting and fishing excursions... Now all I need is the truck........

The rear suspension on the TRD OR and Sport are the same. They both have single rate springs with the monotube shocks. The front suspension is different, not just because of the half inch. The front coils on the Off-road are dual rate vs single rate on the Sport. That’s probably why they felt so different.

This is an interesting thread. It was something I debated with myself.

From a pure looks standpoint, the Sport looks quite a bit better IMO. No chrome, fully blacked out in the front & back, etc.

I do think that the Off-Road offers a little more versatility within the drive, though.

I had originally wanted an Off-Road but the one I wanted was already spoken for by someone else. I ended up committing to a Sport. Then my dealer called me yesterday to tell me the guy who reserved the Off-Road bailed. Since it's actually on lot & not still being built, I went ahead & went with the Off-Road. My first order of business is going all the chrome off of it.

Coming from "dumb" 4wd Toyotas, the sport is almost more appealing without the nanny offroad features. The rear locker is something I would absolutely add to a Sport and feel that is worthwhile on the TRDOR but I feel I'd enjoy being able to control the truck myself rather than the truck control itself and I'm just there steering. Apples and oranges...

Same interior as the Off Road not sure how it’s more cramped unless I missed something on the spec sheet. Can put three adults in my CrewMax backseat and sit comfortable in the front. Now the DC I can’t answer that but pretty sure it’s the same in the OR or Sport. Below is my TRD sport with my new tires on it. Went with 275/60r20 KO2s, could have went larger but didn’t see the gain in it. Plan on doing the leveling kit. The Sport is the better looking truck IMO but the off-road does have more off road capabilities but in my case I have 2020 4Runner TRD off road that does everything that is missing on this.

This may have been asked, but I was thinking myself if I didn't like that chrome on the grill, how are people blacking it out?

IMO...both the OR and Sport will handle about the same off-roading tasks. Anyone believing otherwise, is buying in to marketing. If it can get me through some thick mud after too much rain, up a few inclines, and allow me to pull off the side of the road (kinda in the ditch) and not get stuck...that's off-road enough for me. So, actual off-roading ability really doesn't come in to play for me. However, the freaking CHROME all over the OR is a complete deal killer for me. I want no chrome, I want the black mustache, I want the 20" black wheels, and I want body matching stuff...none of which the OR can have...I think...so Sport for me. BTW...I currently drive a '19 Cement Tacoma OR Access Cab with 32" tires on 17" TRD Pro wheels, and am looking at a Tundra for the increased towing capacity.
