This is the precise scenario that I'm in that requires the cooler.

I wonder if any 2019-2021 Tundra transmissions have exploded due to heat since this thread had started.

This thread is like a car crash. I can't look away from it. Then here I am also crashing into the 19 car pile up.

Update on actual readings. In my 2016, driving highway route this past Monday (65 to 70mph) my highest and average temp was 192. Ambient temp was 62.
Traded in and picked up my new 2021. They are both identical DC Limited 4x4 model.
On return trip today over the same route and slightly slower speeds, similar Ambient temp, my trans temp and torque converter, were 210. So 18 deg higher. Keep in mind that when towing my 6k trailer over the same route a few months back, when ambient temps were 85 to 90, my trans temp stayed around 199.
So yeah, I'm definitely installing a transmissiion cooler. They are necessary.
I plan on keeping this truck a long time.

Here’s a snapshot of my typical temps in 4Hi (edit: with the Hayden cooler I installed almost a year ago). After 45 min of very twisting, hilly pavement, we hit some twisting, hilly gravel roads in East Tennessee with lots of elevation change. I put it in 4Hi once we hit the gravel, and at the time of this snapshot, I had been in 4Hi for 7 miles worth.

At this point, that little puck has had 194ºF coolant flowing through it working to warm the trans fluid to the same temp. It still hadn’t got there yet, after an hour. This leads me to believe it is just as inefficient when it’s attempting to cool heated trans fluid back down to engine coolant temps.
Anyway, more fuel for the fire. :bananadead:

Those temps have to be with a cooler right?

    Yep.
Nope. I do believe the thermostat opened sometime in the middle of that trip though.

I wonder if we will see this TSB in Canada. It’s says “USA Market” at the top.

If you stop it at 6:41 and again at 6:46 it shows both sides. I don’t see any lines going to the transmission. I dont even see any type of puck.

Does it really matter if the 3rd gen has a trans cooler?? Its a completely new/different engine and transmission. Can’t even start to compare it to the “2.5” gen Tundras that had the cooler deleted for still unknown reasons..

I agree that there is a world of difference between “look at this new transmission we designed without an external cooler” and “we deleted the cooler off the exact same transmission we originally designed with one several years ago”.

If the 3rd gen doesn’t have one, it does NOT immediately follow that deleting the cooler on 2019-2021 Tundras was the correct or best decision.

Because if they added it back, some would use that as more justification that it shouldn’t have ever been removed.

yeah the transmission lines are not fully run.

however the set up with the small hard lines is nearly identical to my 4 runner.

Which ones? This is the first time I’ve looked hard at a hybrid so I don’t know what all the lines are.

Just to jump into this. I live in the central valley of CA(hot) and did a back to back test.
Without the cooler just driving around unloaded and normal I was seeing 220*f pan temps.

With a pinned cooler I saw about 175 on the same loop(I actually went farther to try and heat it more).

Today on my drive to work it reached 145* pinned(55* temp outside) so I will unpin mine for the winter. I don't drive it much currently, but will begin to at the end of november.

At 220 was it without the cooler completely or just without pinning the cooler?

Great. Similar non-cooler temps. I would suggest that you always keep it unpinned and let the thermostat do its job. That way you will be OEM stock equivalent, before Toyota deleted the cooler. What external plate and fin cooler did you install? Thx.

Sorry should have clarified, yes no cooler at all.

Cooler dropped temps by a solid 40 degrees.

This is with a Hayden 778hd cooler, I will depin the set up as well, I just wanted to see cool weather temps before I did!(and I need the heater function now LOL)

I made my own bracket/mount, used the toyota thermostat, hoses, and hardlines.
It's essentially the same set up as what is provided here, just a lot cheaper.

it's sick, I bought a factory certified with warranty 2019 (4.6 w/o trans cooler) 19000 miles always serviced at the dealer, and overheats to work empty going on sixty days with 20 reasons why my job site, towing, weights, offroad, etc is the cause. truck has never been off-road, the fact is, it couldn't pull a trailer if it overheats on an 8% grade empty

Lithia Toyota of Redding, gave me a $5000 estimate on a transmission cooler and trans oil flush . . . do I sue them in small claims court or try the aftermarket trans cooler?

I wonder if you can bypass the thermostat upgrading with oil cooler, mine overheats empty on 8% grade in the winter, 2019 with 19,000 miles never pulled a trailer, believe me, it will never run too cold needing a thermostat

2019 19000 miles 4.6 trans overheats going to work (there is a 6% grade) dealer won't cover it, the truck is worthless without doing something

the dealer's quote for the trans cooler is $4300; of course, you have to go aftermarket

it's been 60 days after buying the certified used truck, started going back and forth with David Ambrovitch, manager at Lithia Toyota of Redding, you gotta sue to get the upgrade

I am not suing a dealer or Toyota, warranty is worthless, do the cooler upgrade, 60 days every single day, written reasons why 8% grade and trailers and offroad use caused violating warranty -- peace of mind and $$$; the warranty is worth toilet paper, fix it on your own

I never towed nor took the vehicle offroad or up to 8% grade, and it still has the light warning coming on every day to work and the dealer blames it on me
