FWIW, I just made my appointment with the dealership for next Friday for my 10k service and I'll raise the transmission reverse issue at that time. I'll let you know what, if anything, they put on the receipt.

I really don't understand why this topic always gets so heated on here (ooh, a bit of a pun?).

The 2019s without the cooler came out nearly 3 years ago (fall of 2018 I believe) so we shouldn't have to wait too much longer to find out if there are a bunch of transmissions that are about to fail.

I scheduled a transmission flush service with my local dealership this Friday. This conversation is costing me $200 :spending:
Happy to pay it for the peace of mind. :burnrubber:

I want to install a tranny cooler, I plan to do a lift and bigger tires in the future. I want to do it for peace of mind because I plan to keep the truck until the 4th gen Tundras comes out in 2040.

4th gen will be a turbo 2 cylinder by then. :D (and probably be called version 3.5)

you're probably right about the Gen 3.5 lol. slight face lift because these 2022 Tundras just looks like overgrown Tacomas in my opinion. I would love those tail lights on my gen 2.5 though!

There was some concern over perceived high trans temps with the Ford SuperDuty's. They were also running 210-240 under lighter or no loads. After some investigation they uncovered that the computer doesn't take any action to address the high temps (throttle up the fan, for example) until the temps reach 247.

Under 247 is in the cool range for the F250/F350.

F150's also went to the puck only starting in 2018. No more oil to air cooler. Though I do envy their puck which is bigger than ours. Not many folks retrofitting coolers on the F150. [insert joke about how they know the truck will fall apart after 100k miles]

Can someone please show me published evidence - facts - showing that high temperatures in wheel bearings can cause them to wear and seize? I’m out of bearing grease and am thinking of substituting mayonnaise.

This. You can find a bunch of 2019 tundras on various car websites 2019 and older with over 100k miles on them and the carfax is nothing but maintainance. Obviously no way of knowing if it has an aftermarket cooler but I would bet the majority of tundra owners A) don’t know this site exists B) probably have no idea the truck doesn’t have the cooler

What I did on my truck is vastly different from the amount of work that would happen to do it on mass scale for production.

I didn't document or test jack shit for my cooler setup. After designing the bracket I just sent a DXF out to get it cut on the water jet, never created a product specification or engineering drawing like I would at work. Sure, what I did works (very well I might add) but it is not how it would be done by an OEM.

I am grateful of the Japanese engineers, after the locals were sent to Japan, we have a locker, a driver side grab handle and the cooler back

Of course not. Its only been 2 years. Check back around 2024/2025 after the 5 year powertrain warranties expire. I predict a large amount of failures. At least for those that tow.

Just a note here that group iii base oil can withstand 300 degrees without significant oxidation from heat.
This is the base oil in ws.

    edit :

I was ardently against a cooler but ended up putting one on.

main reason is there isn’t much control over the temps.
If 250 260 275 is fine then great just change the damn thermostat.

I want a system that controls the heat load.

Yeah don’t want to be that guy with my wife and 2 dogs pulling my camper up one of the passes here in Colorado on a 90 deg day with a trans temp warning message flashing in my dash and I’m not even at the top yet! The folks who live in flatland America don’t need to worry about stuff like that. When I read about the guy with the new TRD Pro pulling a 4,000 camper (which is nothing weight wise) had that happen to him it gave me heebie geebies, the passes are stressful enough at times, that would be a nightmare. Plus there’s nothing you can do to cool that tranny down, it’s a heat sink by design with no cooler.

I'm certainly happy that you are Giddy with your oil cooler, and the attempt you are making to proselytize all of the uncooled here. But without evidence of a wide scale problem of destroyed Trannies due to an overheating/ towing problem that hasn't even happened yet totally undermines your narrative of Doom and Gloom. Deriding those here who don't agree with you is also not very helpful to the conversation. Just my 2c.

I honestly hope for all those that have 19-21 Tundras that you don’t have a failure, and like I said earlier if your a replace a truck every 2-3 years type of guy like I have been my whole life all of this is moot. But being 50 years old and having driven more trucks than I can count, towing things small and large all over this country, I am not not going to risk being one of the sloppy seconds leftover Tundra guys. They removed a critical component from a transmission that used to be an essential component from birth of said transmission by design. They didn’t even improve the quality of the transmission fluid as a preventative. They felt it was simply not cost effective with this model Tundra being killed off to spend a little money to make things right for the owners of the final years of production, which is very disappointing. The did however quickly add a cooler to,the new 2022 Tundra, guess the fluid in that tranny can’t handle 260 deg like ours can. I need this truck to last me like 10 years, and I’m not going to gamble on simply being covered under a 60,000 or 100,000 mile warranty as insurance. To each his own, for $400 I’ll not fret this shit at all.

Can you clarify what you saw, and where the cooler actually is located in a 22,? Is it a puck or an Auxiliary mounted cooler, thank you.

I don’t understand what you are asking.

Oh you are talking about the 2022’s, I just saw the video with the Japanese dude that talks about how they added a transmission cooler to the 2022 after having dropped it in recent year model Tundras. It will definitely be auxiliary, I assure you they know that what they did was wrong, they can’t afford to have owners of the newest greatest TUNDRA complaining about ridiculously hot transmission temps.

You just said that they quickly added a cooler for the 22 after not adding one for the 19+. Have you actually seen the cooler you were just bragging about? I still have not seen a pic of a standalone Auxiliary Tran's cooler. Have you?

That's your answer? Some dude says its an "oil cooler", and that settles it for you? Where the fuck is it mounted, and how does it work?, can you answer this, or you can't by yourself?

    Go to this video

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgkDhvrdWnU

You can clearly see the transmission lines going to the radiator on the top pass side.

I didn't clearly see anything like you described, so its not a stand alone Auxiliary cooler, but just goes through the radiator, is that correct?

Ahhh, it’s a lease. That makes more sense. So, knowing at the end of the lease term that you have been subjecting the internals of that transmission to sustained 265ºF+ temps for however many years (three? five?), are you really going to want to purchase that truck at the end of the lease? Especially considering you have potentially related issues with the transmission already?

This reads to a lot of us like “Look at these high transmission temps. Am I going to do anything about it? Nope, it’s a lease. Transmission is acting weird though, going to the dealer, brb…”

Will depend entirely on what is on the market at the time of lease end.

That being said, I’ve played the aftermarket parts warranty denial game with Toyota in the past and believe it’s more likely that you will see non-heat related transmission issues being denied warranty coverage than you will see heat related transmission issues. Just another reason I’m not considering a cooler.
