Truck dies at idle and shudders at cruising speed

Engine dies after being driven for 30 min to an hour when idling at traffic light or at very slow speeds. RPM'S drop to 500 or lower(maybe) and at cruising speeds will randomly start to shudder, almost like a misfire but no CEL. Just had fuel pump replaced and cleaned the TB.

When it started shuddering today I exited the freeway doing about 60, put it in neutral and coasted while revving the engine. Revved just fine, so I put it back in to D and accelerated back on to the freeway without a problem. No issues the rest of the hour drive back home.

Anyone else have experiences like this and what fixed it?

I am assuming they replaced the fuel filter when they did the pump?

Why was the fuel pump replaced? (Just trying to get a full picture of what's going on.)

I would assume the mechanic did this when diagnosing the fuel pump going bad.

2005 has no ‘fuel filter’ but does have a sock in the tank. See picture.

The earlier gens have a traditional external ‘in line fuel filter’ in addition to the sock.

Ah, I figured that pump was replaced before the issues. New parts can indeed be bad.
Best thing to do is look at live data and monitor fuel Trims, MAF and a/f sensor readings

Yeah, wish I had the monitoring equipment for that. Running fuel system cleaner through it today and cleaning MAF too. See what happens.

If you have access to an Android phone or tablet, a $3-25 Bluetooth obd2 adapter and $6 'Torque' app will get you that capability.

Get a simple monitor like they are sayin. It will save you trips to a shop, one trip will cost more than a cheap monitor

I do have an Android phone and I do have the FIXD obd2 tool but I'm not sure I can see real time data. Any particular adapter you reccommend?

Is the Fixd tool a Bluetooth to obd2 adapter, one that plugs into the truck and pairs to your phone?

If so, download the 'free' version of Torque and see if it is compatible. Many of these adapters are elm327 (chipset) based and can be used with other apps.

Awesome! I will do that. Yes, FIXD is a Bluetooth adapter to the phone but works with Apple as well. I'll download that app right now.

If the fuel pump was supposed to be the cause, and replacement didn't help, and no CEL comes up...makes me wonder if this problem isn't transmission related.

If you don't get any better ideas, try a transmission drain and fill. If the problem improves or goes away temporarily, I would change the transmission fluid completely.

I'll check that out. Just curious what would link the transmission to these issues? I know veey little. I try but my knowledge is very small.

This is a long shot, my dad had a similar issue with his. After new fuel pump and multiple trips to the dealer. Toyota called in a master mechanic from out of state and came to the conclusion the ECU was partially unclipped behind the glove box. Again this is a long shot but worth checking out.

I had similar symptoms on an older Honda Accord; turned out it was the ignition switch. Easy fix but not sure if this could be your issue

    Couple reasons:
    1. You said the word "shuddering" which is a classic transmission symptom and term.
    2. It exhibited the symptoms while in gear, revved fine when in neutral.

This does not mean it's your transmission. But it's a reasonable suspicion. Worth at least checking the fluid level, '05 has no dipstick though. Have to check under the truck at the fill plug and only when the trans is warmed up will it give a usable level indication.

"just had fuel pump and TB worked on" would make them and their associated components my number 1 culprits.

    There...That!^^^^

Incomplete clutch disengagement could cause stalling at idle, shuddering is a classic torque convertor symptom. Eliminate the fuel system as the cause first.

I say "shuddering" but it's hard to explain. It's been a while since i experienced a misfiring engine, so it could be that. It's almost like it's missing and then lurching forward .
