    HI,
My 2016 4Runner Trail edition towed the 2010 folding A-Frame Chalet 1930 nicely. 2000lb dry, 3000 loaded. Folding campers are less prone to "wind" sway.
Did have sway once, reaching for a snack. It was under control, but the vehicle started breaking, fortunately no one ran into me. I have Sumo Springs on the trailer and that might have helped.
Mileage: Towing costs 4-5mpg. But cost doubles if I exceed 2000rpm, about 65-70mph. I think it drops out of top gear too soon.
I am now buying a 24' Winnebago Minne travel trailer. 5000lb dry, 7000 loaded.
What can I expect from a Tundra 5.7L? How should it be equipped? What are good used years?

You can expect the Tundra to tow the Winnie like a bigger version of your 4Runner. You will have more than enough power to pull the trailer up grades, but like the 4Runner, the 5.7 engine will rev to stay in the powerband.

Using a weight distribution hitch, sway will likely be zero. Airbags or Sumos in combination with the WDH will balance the weight properly and level the truck.

Welcome! MPG will depend on terrain. Flat, you'll be lucky is get 11. Hills/mountains 7-10. Staying 65 or less will help and is not a bad idea anyhow carrying that much weight. 2014-2017 are the years of current body style that have an actual transmission cooler and serviceable u-joints/driveshaft.

Re towing, you should give this thread a read.
    https://www.tundras.com/threads/tow-in-d-or-s4-tow-haul-mode-engaged.61161/

And know these trucks (and most 1/2 tons) run out of payload way before towing capacity.

I was in the exact same boat as you. I traded in my 4runner for a Tundra 2yrs ago. Best decision ever. I'm a die-hard Toyota 4x4 guy and I loved my 2014 4runner. The Tundra is just better for towing and multi tasking. Its so much more stable and confidence inspiring when towing. Especially with family and gear on board. Trust me, you wont regret it. And then when you upgrade the Tundra with Bilsteins and Coachbuilder suspension, you'll be on cloud 9

    Good Inputs.
Some are telling me the F-150 with largest ECO-Boost 10 speed tranny would be better. They say the Tundra is dated, and lower mpg. No one challenges the reliability.
BTW: The Coachbuilder Shackle thread looks interesting. Not sure why I would want them. Do they void warranty like other lifts? I might want to add rear stabilizer bar.

On paper the F-150 is going to be "better", but over a 5 year period you could throw $100 out the window of your Tundra every month and still come out spending less than you would in a domestic.
That being said, you need to research and be sure the exact truck you want (all options and such accounted for) will safely haul the exact trailer you want. Decide on your priorities and which you are more willing to compromise on. If you get a Tundra it will limit your trailer options because it is an older design and the payload reflects that, but the numbers you gave do fall within it's capabilities. If you are thinking of going bigger or heavier with the trailer then you may have to look at a 3/4 ton truck, and sadly there is no Toyota option for this in the States.

Check the link that MTgirl posted and go to post #235. That'll give you an idea, though I recommend against running it at 70 like they did. Towing is handled best at a bit lower speed for MPG and control reasons.

    Welcome to the forum.

I have a 4th Gen V6 4runner and have done quite a bit of towing a 2700 lb pop up and utility trailers. It does pretty good and has served well.

However, moving to a Tundra for towing is like a night and day difference. The tundra tows SOOOO much better. That said- still have my 4runner and love it but I will not tow with it again unless I have to. I also enjoy the extra room of the Tundra.

Off road however, my lifted 4runner kicks my Tundras butt!

We just towed our 26 jayco bunkhouse to Pensacola area from San Antonio for a mini vacation.did around 1600 miles round trip. Trailes weight loaded is in the 6000 lb range. I have a 2.5/1 lift, 295/70/18 tires, and regeared with 5.29s. I also have the 46 gallon steel gas tank, rock sliders, full size spare, tonneau cover, and front bumper all adding weight to the truck. Truck pulled easy on the highway, we ran in 5th gear once we got up to speed. In 5th we were running 2800rpm at 70mph, which is the what the rpms were in 4th gear before the regear. We stayed around 70-72mph most of the drive. MPG is normally 13.5 for my daily commute, towing it averaged just under 8. Trans temps stayed around 197 degrees, maybe hit 200 once when we punched it to get around a slow car. I have an equalizer WDH.
Here is the truck and trailer

Here is my mileage tracking app, the newest 5 are my last fillups, all while towing.

Cfincke, nice rig, good data. That 2014 with the transmission cooler is running cool below 200f.
Still curious what the 2019-2020 with no external trany cooler temps are.

We have a Winnebago travel trailer that sounds like it’s right around the size you’re looking at. It’s a 2500FL. Weight numbers are pretty much the same. Came out of a 2013 f150 into a 2018 tundra trd offroad. Towing is like night & day between the two. Tundra does it so much better. And the factory brake controller works fine for me. A lot of people 1138E47C-A55A-4F50-9B0B-42CAC4EB72DF.jpg complain about them not working right. Gas mileage is no worse than the ford with the 5.0 was
