Hi there first post. I went Tundra shopping yesterday and walked away disappointed. I liked the truck and just recently got my wife a new 2020 4runner which we love but both trucks that I test drove shook. By shook I mean that the steering wheel vibrated and shook left to right pretty hard. They also both had VERY un-centered steering wheels, like not OCD un-centered but never been aligned un-centered. First one while driving straight looked like I was making a left turn. Second one was the same but opposite direction to the right. The first one also vibrated hard in the seat along with the steering wheel. I was driving on the same roads I came to the dealer on, smooth with no issues.

Is this normal or just bad luck COVID builds? First one was a TRD OR and second was an SX. Both with less than 20 miles on the ODO and built in TX the same state I was test driving in. Anyone else experience this? I don't know what to do now. I wanted a truck that I can keep and rely on for 10+ years which eliminates the Detroit big 3.

Funny enough, on my way home I stopped at a gas station and a guy started asking me about my car "type-R." He was driving a 2015 Tundra and I asked him about his truck, he said its rode like a Cadillac for all of the 140k miles hes put on it.

What did the dealer have to say about it after you test drove the trucks?

They said maybe the tires had flat spots from sitting but that it would work itself out over time.

Could be true. I haven't noticed anything like that on my truck yet. :fingerscrossed:

My truck didn't have any shake, but has developed a minor shake with the new tires. Falken Wilpeaks, but I knew going in that flat spots could happen with these tires.
If they were on stock tires, there shouldn't be any shaking. Combine that with the steering being off, and I'd say the dealer/salesman doesn't know his burro from a burrow.

Also, what is an "SX"? Is that another one of those regional packages?

Some kind of appearance package. Think I'll go somewhere else and try again, I've purchased other vehicles from this place and they have great customer service but they only had 6 Tundras and only 2 within my price range which were the 2 I drove.

Mine is off a touch to the left since brand new. I tried fixing it when I swapped steering wheels but the way the teeth line up I couldn't get it where I wanted. It's a minor annoyance that you forget about once you stop focusing on it.

Not sure about other places but in Canada it's essentially a cheap appearance package for the base SR5.

Note that the base SR5 actually comes with privacy glass, fog lamps and a driver's footwell light, though, so it's essentially just changing all the chrome for black and different wheels and tires for about $350.20200628_144603.jpg

Oh yeah no if it was just a touch that would have been no issue, my R is off a touch to the left and the 4runner a touch to the right. These truck's wheels were darn near sideways but that wasn't even the main issue, it just added to it.

The main issue was the shaking and vibrations on a smooth road.

My truck shakes after sitting for a while because the tires (Ridge Grapplers) flat spot. Works itself out in 2-3 miles, then it’s smooth and steady.

I had the almost the same issue with one of the first tundra’s i test drove. Finally got the sales guy to tell me that ya there was a issue with someone getting it off the truck and that they are going to get it fixed. I told him he should of got it fixed in the first place before you let others test drive it. FIRST IMPRESSIONS. I drove to another dealer the next weekend and drove two other trucks before i ordered mine. Both drove beautiful.

New truck the steering wheel should be spot on and no vibration / shaking.
No flat spots on tires. Sounds like they need alinement. And tires balanced.
I have had many new tundras 8 of them and 2 tacos. 2 Lexus suv.
I work in oil fields in nm lots of off road miles Your salesperson is a joke for saying that.

Ah thank you! I just couldn't figure it out after I drove the second one because it wasn't a one off like if it had just been the first one I drove. Sounds like the plan is to go somewhere else and try again. I appreciate everyone's kind responses, not trying to dis a good truck that all yall own.

Thanks Batman 900. I trade at 80000 or just under excellent trade in value and the truck is still good for the next owner. And I don’t have much problems.
I’ve learned what to re-enforce the weak spots.I now have a 2020 tss dbl cab with full icon suspension. And am very happy I’ll be keeping this on for a while.
Happy hunting on what ever truck you choose.

I am experiencing the same issue. I just purchased a 2020 Tundra with the TSS off road package. At around 62mph there is wheel vibrations. I assume this is due to poor tire balancing or alignment issues. Taking it back to dealer soon to get it looked at.

I see you just joined today, you didn't get it in south TX yesterday by chance did you lol.... The one I drove they had at the front and said another guy was supposed to show up later to buy it. Would be a small world if that was the case.

I am having the vibration issues as well, and it only happens once I hit over 50 mph. The weird this is the alignment feels to be dead on. So I made an appointment to get my tires balanced. Hopefully that helps!!!

My purchased new 2019 showed feathering on the front wheels after 4,000 miles. Took it in for an early 5,000 checkup and mentioned it. They said they put it on the alignment machine and it was within specs so they did nothing. Took it in last week for the 10,000 mile check up and mentioned it again. I got a better advisor this time and she made sure it was looked at. Like others memtioned in the forum my wheel did not seem lineup straight in addition to the feathering. They said the alignment was out and the steering wheel was off a bit. I never mentioned that part so I know they looked at it this time. Hopefully it's all better now.

To be honest, what makes me so nervous is that I had a 2018 Tacoma TRD OR with a front end shake that no one could fix. Dealership changed tires twice, 2nd time was with a set of my choice that they purchased for me. They aligned 4 times and balanced at least 8 times. I lost my a$$ trading that truck in after 2 months of ownership. Since that happened, I met one guy at work with the same experience with the same year Tacoma and he also traded after 2 months. Wife's co-worker test drove same year Tacoma OR and didn't purchase because of shaking. I still have the video on my iPhone of the steering wheel moving more than a shake weight in the hands of a meth squirrel.

Edit: I didn't catch it on the test drive because I only went 50 on the side roads. It was when leaving and I hit the highway that the whole ordeal started. My fault, I always get on the highway now during test drives.

I never test drove my 2020 Tundra. Drove it off the lot and 250 miles home. Smooth the whole way home, but it was built before this Covid19 thing happened.

Sounds like the same issue with 4runners and Tacomas...that highway steering wheel wobble at 55-60mph.

It took two tries to balance my tires to get rid of this. And it happens when I need to get another alignment.

Very common and usually just a wheel balance or alignment issue.

I had this issue with brand new 2018, BFG KO2 tires. Steering wheel shake from 60+ MPH. Had it aligned multiple times + tires balanced and it would always come back. I ended up swapping the tires out. I will still get it now but it’s like a previous commenter said, from flat spot after tires are sitting for a few days. It works itself out pretty quick.

Ok that’s brings up another question? I was thinking about going with the BFG Ko2 tires. Has anyone else had any issues with them?
    Thanks
