I fell down the stairs at work head 1st a couple weeks ago. Landed on my shoulder & back .. No broken bones.

I Can’t move my arm at all without extreme pain.
The Doctors are 90% sure I have a torn rotator cuff. An MRI scheduled tonight.

    Has anybody experienced this?

    how did they repair?

Did you get back to 100% usage?

How long did it take to recuperate?

That sucks. Hope the MRI shows whats wrong.

I have shoulder issues, but dont think its rotator cuff. Dont want surgery so I've never gone to find out.

That is a rough one. MRI will tell it all. They have this surgery down to a science now, just make sure you get a good ortho that has done this bunch. Healing is a process and make sure you do as told and wear the immobilization/cast/nylon sling as directed. The rehab is what is going to make a difference it is a number if weeks and go to every appointment and do your exercises like they tell you to even when done. You have to do this to get full range of motion back in your arm so it doesn’t get all stiffened up on you. You should do just fine. Do your rehab and follow direction and keep up the exercises even when done. Best of luck to ya.

Could be a bad Labral tear?? Broken Humerus?? Like I said MRI will diagnose the issue/s. Some super stitches and anchor it back in place and you will be right as rain!! Do Not Miss Rehab!!!

yep. Had mine repaired Sept 2018. It sucked. 12 months after surgery I pretty much wouldn’t even know I had it. PT is key. Good luck.

Do whatever it takes to avoid surgery!

I had a bicycle accident 30+ years ago and suffered injuries that resulted in a frozen shoulder about 10 years ago. Treatment for that condition revealed two huge bone spurs that were ground down via surgery. I have never recovered from this surgery...

I had shoulder surgery 2 years ago for torn RC and Bursitis. My RC was just frayed and not torn all the way through. 40 years of baseball/softball took its toll. Surgery was 1hr but coming out of anesthesia took 3. Dr told me to leave the sling on until the pain said I could remove it. Was actually tossing a softball the following week and by the next season (8weeks later) I was back slinging across the infield like I was back in high school, and I am almost 50. Do the rehab and try to keep the pain at bay.

I know i should. I did go in and get examed. Doc doesnt think rotator cuff because i have strength when testing for it without pain. But i cant throw a baseball or softball anymore without pain. Sucks, both shoulders as i can throw left and right handed. Never been the same after my motorcycle accident.

Been there, done that. I was in a sling for 8 weeks total, the first 4 was 24hrs/7 and for weeks 4-8, I could take the sling off around the house as long as I wasn't doing anything. Physical therapy sucked, but totally worth it bc other than a few scars (mine was orthoscopic so 4 total, 1 about 3 inches long, and 3 others about 1/2 long), it's like it never happened.

I’ve torn both rotator cuffs from benching heavy. Just had my right done last year and have three anchors holding it in place and one metal anchor holding the bicep in place and it was torn as well. I’ll echo what others have said.

Make sure your ortho has done this procedure many times and has a good reputation. Do EXACTLY as he/she says. Go to PT as directed and finish the program. It is very painful the first few months at PT as they will push you. I also did PT at home to help stretch it out. I’ve got about 90% of my mobility back and I’m happy with that.

It sucks man, but I’m glad I did it. The pain from a rotator cuff tear is bad.

Had mine repaired 3 years ago. Took off 2 months from the firehouse...Back to work. Took about 10 months to be back to 100 % and pain free. Do the PT every day religiously and let it heal.

Not sure about the availability in your area, but I went the STEM cell injections route to repair my shoulder let go (labrum SLAP tear, partially torn rotator cuff, and bicep anchor 90% detached). STEM cells were from me, taken via bone marrow extraction from my hips (by far the most painful process). I mainly didn’t want to have the bicep anchor relocated, and since the rehab time for everything was going to be up to a year. Also have seen and known too many people where their shoulders were never the same after surgery, and their procedures were just normal rotator cuff or labrum tears.

Was back to jiujitsu, Olympic weightlifting, everything pain free within 6 months. There is a reason all the pro sports teams go the STEM cell route first instead of surgery.

Was not covered through my insurance, but figured it was worth the risk. Then if it didn’t work, I’d just go the surgery route.

    Ditto. ^^

Don't wait too long like I did. The longer you wait the more damage. I'm about 99% back to normal.

I have been working in sports medicine for 20+ years now' lots of good advice so far. The surgery for these types injuries has evolved over the past 5-10 years. It used to be they had to open you up to fix it. Most surgeries nowadays can be accomplished arthroscopically. Get a surgeon who does a tone of these surgeries and one who has references. Don't take the "This is the BEST guy around" advice from others......do some research and ask for references. If you'd like some real world experience PM me and I will see if I have any contacts in the area. The real key to shoulder surgeries especially is the rehab. A good PT with knowledge of the surgeons protocol is worth their weight in gold. Happy to be of assistance of I can

Look into stem cell therapy, could avoid surgery. MAKE sure your health ins provider would cover such treatment.. I know a few guys that had great results with knee and shoulder injury's using this method with NO surgery

I have had rotator cuff surgeries before. Pain in the ass for recover just because of the recovery time to get back to normal. If they try and make you go to PT "before" MRI (does not sound like your case since yours is tonight) DO NOT DO IT. This more times than not will make a tear worse, how else can you exercise with a tear and not make it worse (my first surgery they had me do PT first, never again).

The stronger you are going into surgery the much better off you will be afterwards.
Always push yourself within limits (I tend to go too far but have not had trouble yet) and listen to your Therapist.
Homework sucks but not when it comes to PT, always do your exercises.
    DRINK PLENTY OF WATER
Stretching does hurt but it is a necessary evil. Work with your Therapist to understand the feeling while stretching to make sure you are not going too far and not understanding the pain. Takes a bit to get the feel but once you do you are golden.

I have had 3 rotator cuff surgeries (4 if you count the infection surgery caused from the pain pump in my first surgery) and I have 100% range of motion in both shoulders.
    Be brave soldier!!!

If it happened at work, MOST DEFINITELY file a workman's comp claim. They MAY try to get you to see one of "their" providers. At the end of the day, it is YOUR decision who you see. They MAY try to say that they will only pay for a portion of another provider, but talk to your primary insurance company to see if they will make up the difference. They MAY do it. If they do not, you can always petition the workman' comp insurance company.

Stem cell therapy, traditionally, will not work on full thickness ligament or muscle tears. I am of the opinion that less is more when it comes to surgery. The unintended consequence of not getting a rotator cuff tear fixed is the propensity to do further damage. You do NOT want to get frozen shoulder; do not want to have a multidirectional instability that causes another issue like a chondral defect or the like. I would get this looked at asap - an MR Arthrogram is likely the test of choice...….

At any rate, good luck man. This IS a challenging recovery but well worth it in the long run.

Had my rotator cuff tear repaired a few years back. I don't regret it, no pain now and I got full use and range of motion back. As mentioned, if you do it, make sure you do the PT on schedule.
    Best of luck!

yeah. I can’t do any of those motions.
I can bend my forearm from the elbow only.
I can pick my arm up forward with my other arm.
Absolutely no movement to the side or rear with out intense pain. I wake up multiple times during the night in pain.

good advise on the ice mixture.
My Wife is on it with the ice 20 min on 40min off.

I finished working the day when it happened & have been working every day since.

I have one good arm to point & tell people what to do. Although if I have surgery. I will likely take some time off.

I have a couple friends who had the surgery and both had great results. If you're a side-sleeper who rolls around a lot, getting a recliner that allows your lay back and sleep might be a good idea to avoid rolling on it while it's repairing. Yes, some crappy insurances require a person to go to PT before they will approve an MRI and if yours done, you have to go but do NOT let them move your arm around...tell them you will try to do what they want but just say, "Nope, hurts too much" if the movement is hurting. Tell them to show you what they want you to try and then try it...but don't hurt yourself. Best of luck and keep up updated!

    Trying not to mod it
Fellow at work totalled his rotator cuff. Had surgery with an Dr. that handles injuries for the University of Wyoming athletes. Was laid up for about 6 months, but he followed the doctor's instructions to a T and has better mobility in his repaired shoulder than his uninjured one.

    Been there done that.

Here are my lessons learned about the whole ordeal.
    1. Doing PT before my surgery (and pre-MRI) likely made my issues worse
    2. MRIs are good, but not always precise enough to give you the whole picture of the issues you have. I ended up with a torn supraspinatus, bone spur, and torn labrum.
    3. Be 100% compliant with your PT after the surgery
    4. Use an ice-bath recirculator for your shoulder (pre and post surgery)
    5. Set reasonable expectations: I think your 100% target is around 2 years
    6. Important Add. After surgery, do not wait for your nerve block to wear off before you take your pain meds. I have had a lot of orthopedic surgeries and the pain from my RC surgery was by far the worst I have ever experienced.
