Okay I just got back from Tahoe and it snowed. My previous grand Cherokee was a full time 4wd so I never had to worry about switching. When I got to the mountain, chains were required. It was snowing and there was a lot of snow roadside, but the road itself was pretty much just melted water and maybe just a little bit of slush. Should I be in 4wd or do I need more snow under the tires?

I havent used my tundra in the snow yet. but stock tires should be good enough.. maybe not on ice. but dont quote me on that.
But you will be good in 2by til you you start getting squirley. then just flip it to 4by and you will be good. keep it safe speed and turn smooth with easy braking.

Sounds to me like you were kind of in that grey area where you could've probably safely been in either.

With high grip tires, 2WD would've probably been fine most of the time. With the typical "stock" tires, 4WD would've been fine as well, at slower speeds. More than say, 50-60mph might be a little too much, it kind of depends. The wet roadway would've offered enough slippage to prevent the driveline from binding until you got into some intown driving where you're making sharper turns. This is just my perspective, not witnessing firsthand the conditions you were driving in and no firsthand experience of your driving comfort level and skill. Also, safer is better. FWIW

When you begin to lose traction from the start, use 4HI.
Please take note, 4HI only helps with traction, not stopping.
Many are under the belief that using 4HI is almost like invisible mode. That is far from the truth.

Agreed. For example, ice can totally mess up the ECM. Will be confused as to what wheel to apply brakes. My Tacoma had the same problem. Sometimes your pedal will go to the floor while the ECM is still trying to figure out what to do. I turn off nanny's when driving in town at lower speeds to avoid that issue when icy. As far as driving speeds in 4 HI, I drove the last 700 to 800 miles, in less than ideal winter conditions thru Yukon Territory and on to Anchorage at speeds up to 70 mph with zero, nil, none, affects. No binding at all. Ever. Remember the roads were not dry which would have fracked up something for sure. As long as the surface you are driving on is wet, snowy, icy, you are good to go. I've been there and done that. Actual experience, not speculation as to what "could" happen. Would and probably will do it again. All depends on experience of course. Don't go beyond your abilities/comfort level. Play it safe until you get to know your what your truck can and can not do.

I wondered how fast you could go in 4HI. Up to 70 huh? For some reason i was thinking you could not go over 60.

Thanks @joonbug and to all the contributors. I used to have a 4WD and always wondered about this. My 07 Tundra is only 2WD but I'm looking to get a 4WD next time.
